DEACON ST.HOPE NEVER DIES - At its core, Days Gone is about survivors and what makes them human: desperation, loss, madness, betrayal, friendship, brotherhood, regret, love and hope. It's about how even when confronted with such enormous tragedy they find a reason to live. Hope never dies. DEACON ST. JOHN - Play as Deacon St. John, a bounty hunter facing a brutal struggle for survival, searching for a reason to live.
In addition to human drifters, marauders, and other groups, Deacon must face a wilderness overrun by Freakers mindless, feral creatures, more animal than human but very much alive and quickly evolving. Freakers have needs, habits and behaviors that the player can learn and adapt to.
The harsh high-desert of the Pacific Northwest offers a large variety of environments in a single geographical area. One minute Deacon can be riding through a pristine forest, a snow field, a lush meadow, and the next, be in the harsh desert lava fields. The hazardous environments, scarred by millions of years of volcanic activity, are defined by ancient lava flows, mountains, caves, cliffs and river basins, delivering a breathtaking backdrop to an equally diverse style of gameplay. Cinnabar mines, lava tube caves and small rural towns offer a variety of environments to explore.
A Dynamic World
Using the power of PlayStation 4 and Unreal Engine 4, Days Gone offers an incredibly realistic and detailed open-world experience. Vast and hostile environments can be fully explored on the back of Deacon's drifter bike. Abandoned vehicles can be searched for useful items. Towns and buildings can be entered and searched at great risk. All lighting is done in real time eye adaption technology creates a real sense of dread when entering dark buildings; day and night have an impact on the experience; weather affects enemy behavior.
Brutal Sandbox Combat

CD-ActionJul 23, 2021Great port of a great title. Zombie games are all around us, but Bend Studio managed to squeeze every last drop out of this worn out setting. Everything is well-designed and polished in Days Gone – the believable world and characters in it, the distinct post-apocalyptic aura, the crafting, the thrilling combat and spectacular encounters with bloodthirsty hordes. In addition, this version is well-optimized and runs smoothly on a mid-range PC. [08/2021, p.48]
May 17, 2021Days Gone provides a good challenge and an interesting story, which should make PC users really happy about this port from PS4. Technically speaking, it’s a fairly good game with excellent graphics, a good soundtrack and expected stability. Some little quirks here and there, but it will keep you busy slaughtering monsters for a while.
May 18, 2021Days Gone arrives on PC with a very good adaptation that tick most of the boxes a good port needs. There are no new features or content but, if you missed it on PS4, you have now a better way to discover this title.
May 17, 2021Days Gone lands on PC as the second PlayStation Studios exclusive to make the multiplatform leap. The port has no major issues, hence providing a remarkable adventure with Deacon at the helm. Whether you have a PC fully prepared for top performance or a more modest one, the fact remains that the Days Gone port is a pretty recommendable experience.
May 17, 2021The definitive way to play Days Gone—regardless of the issues that come with the game.
May 18, 2021As I said before, Days Gone feels like bad TV. It has no substance, but goddamn is it nice just to relax and follow along with the story and its hypnotizing gameplay loops. There are definitely better games out there, but without a doubt, Days Gone is a perfectly entertaining title to waste a week in.
Jun 8, 2021Bigger is better. It might suit a bag of chips - Lay's salt and pepper, please - but not a computer game. Or at least not for Days Gone for PC, which combines the same large open world of the PS4 game with an overwhelming number of missions. Do we think Days Gone is a bad game? No, absolutely not. But to go back to the comparison with potato chips - one of our areas of expertise next to computer games - the bag is big, the content is weak.

May 19, 2021PC version of Days Gone is almost perfect. I'm glad this game can finally shine as it was meant to shine already in 2019.

I knew this game had a mixed reception on PS4, but I have enjoyed it quite a lot.
It’s not too common to see Unreal Engine 4 doing big open worlds without major performance or optimization issues, but Days Gone manages to present a decently sized world, with nice looking graphics and environments, and it runs pretty well.
Mouse input feels good enough, no issues for me, despite some people experiencing some issues with a small “mouse deadzone”, I play at 1600 DPI and 0.12 in game sensitivity, and had zero issues aiming my headshots.
Keybinds are very customizable and left handed friendly (I'm lefty and I can use arrow keys, and all the keys nearby, including Numpad keys). There's also a "walk" toggle key, which so many games lack these days, and we can make sprint and aim either hold or toggle, also very good. There's also the option to change QTEs from quick tap to hold, also a welcome feature for keyboard users.
Performance is great on my Ryzen 5 3600 and RTX 3060 Ti, even at 150% Scale, Very High Settings, getting like 70-80 FPS, and no particular stutters so far that I have noticed. The in game frame-rate limiter isn't the greatest, that's a common thing to see in games, but Rivatuner or NV Control Panel can improve that, in case you want to set an FPS cap.
I have read (and seen) that the resolution scale the game uses can actually degrade image quality the higher we go, so I ended up switching to 1620 DSR downsampling.
I could also notice some ghosting / trails on the motorcycle’s wheels, due to TAA probably, but it’s not too distracting. Probably something to look into for a future patch, for sure.
The characters are well animated and only in rare occasions I noticed some awkwardness in certain cutscenes; overall, they did a decent job with this, I reckon. Their models are quite detailed too, with nice textures and skin shading, and even a nice sweat effect on them, or also used when they bleed or it’s raining, very nice indeed.
Speaking of characters, I liked most of them except the ones that were supposed to be hated for obvious reasons.
Witwer’s performance as Deacon was nice, probably resembling him a bit too much at times, haha, obviously since they scanned his face and all, but it’s just him, his mannerisms and all, I thought it was funny to see him so accurately in the game.
The story I also liked it, even though this is a theme very used in other games, especially in “zombie” games, but I think the game dealt with the matter quite well.
By the end of the game I felt quite a lot was accomplished by the main character and his allies, but of course we all know this game has a, somewhat, open ending and yeah I could pretty much see a sequel here, there’s enough material and, honestly, it’d be a shame if this world and game do not get a proper sequel, I do understand now how all the console players who’ve been asking for a sequel feel, it's not a bad game, really, it's not the greatest of all time, but it's not bad either, it's enjoyable.
All in all, don’t want to extend this review too much, I enjoyed the game quite a lot, the motorcycle is awesome, handles pretty damn well with keyboard and mouse, honestly, way better than in most games, where normally a controller is preferred, but here it was exceptionally good with the keyboard, a good amount of inertia and weight to it, so it felt just right.
Compared to Horizon Zero Dawn, which had a disastrous PC launch, with many issues and crashes for a huge part of the player base, Days Gone’s release has been amazingly smooth so…good job, Bend Studio, this is how you launch on PC a port from a console game.… Expand
