Cons: The graphics didn't quite convince me, the game doesn't look bad but I expected a better evolution. Excess WOKE references. I felt that the game was quite easier than the original.

Pros: The game is faithful to the original Dead Space in general, adding new mechanics. I have to say that several mechanics like Zero Gravity are taken from Dead Space 2 but they feel well implemented.

5/10 - Loyal remake held back by stutters and technical issues

The presentation in this game is pretty decent but there seems to be an issue with optimization here. My 2080s was using 60% of it's GPU while somewhat taxing my i7-10700k. The game often jumped between running as smooth as butter to random dips to much lower fps. Entering new areas caused issues too, which shouldn't be the

The presentation in this game is pretty decent but there seems to be an issue with optimization here. My 2080s was using 60% of it's GPU while somewhat taxing my i7-10700k. The game often jumped between running as smooth as butter to random dips to much lower fps. Entering new areas caused issues too, which shouldn't be the case when running on an SSD on medium/high settings in 1080p.

I managed to play the entire game without finding the line gun, I have no idea how that occurred but given that it was my favorite gun in the original it's pretty disappointing, I was being fairly thorough searching around the ship in every side room so god knows where it was hiding

In any case, for all it's graphical improvements, the technical issues don't make up for the additions here. I'd rather replay the original.

If you want to replay first Dead Space – the remake will scratch that itch. But don’t expect any meaningful improvements over the original. [page 54]

More striking are the zero-gravity sections. [Issue#382, p.108]

Fortunately, Dead Space does provide the player with one way to ratchet up the intensity. If combat doesn't scare you, then you can always turn on the Impossible difficulty setting where if you die once then it's game over (the remake has helpfully added the option to continue playing at reduced difficulty, the original would just delete your save entirely). I would highly recommend checking out the Impossible difficulty, even if you're not the sort that generally goes in for challenge runs, if only because it gives the game a sense of urgency and tension that it otherwise lacks.
