From the distinct, sprawling domains of your three primary marks, to the adorably avian way your crow tilts and juts their head around, the game never misses a moment to delight you with some new wonder, and just when you think it’s run out of surprises; whether it’s a new tune, a beautiful vignette, or a quiet moment of empathy, it’s always got something else tucked underneath its wing.

Death’s Door is one of the best games released this year and will certainly be a game-of-the-year contender by the time 2021 wraps up.

Death's Door finds the sweet spot between an enjoyable and challenging experience. The smooth and fun combat was supplemented with fun puzzles and many secrets, all packaged in an adorable cartoonish art style.

A distinctive twist on an established formula, and a remarkable accomplishment for such a small team. Its subject matter might seem like serious business, but this game about death feels thrillingly alive. [Issue#362, p.112]

Death's Door is one of the indie surprises of the year. Very well designed, melancholic and challenging, without being difficult. It knows how to transfer the essence of games like Dark Souls and Zelda in a delicious isometric perspective, with well-designed puzzles and a very well measured combat. Acid Nerve has done its homework.

The setting is intriguing, but the story is bland. Open world promises exploration, but there is nothing to find. The combat has all the beats – but it just isn’t interesting. [Issue#254, p.68]

With a well established combo system, power-ups and truly entertaining solo gaming and intense boss fights. A very well established system of boss health level indication. Music is another sticking factor, you will come back just to listen to it. Im sure you will have this OST with you for quite a while. Avarice theme is a masterpiece as a whole and it’s so intense for a fights we have inside of chests. A truly game of a year for me. Expand

I heard this game compared to Zelda and Dark Souls, two game series I've never got into. However I absolutely adore this game. Tonally I enjoyI heard this game compared to Zelda and Dark Souls, two game series I've never got into. However I absolutely adore this game. Tonally I enjoy the whimsy mixed with dark sensibilities, I honestly wish there were more story beats to the game because I greatly enjoyed the writing. In a couple of the boss areas the bosses make multiple appearances to talk to you and that gives them so much more personality. The gameplay has been "meh"ed. (Yes, I used "meh" as a verb). I very much disagree with that sentiment. When people say that they are saying there isn't much innovation in the gameplay from start to finish. Which is completely true. You do get extra abilities but they are more for puzzle solving and getting around/through terrain. However the combat is very solid and challenging at times. My right hand thumb is in quite sore from the tension of those boss fights and room challenges.

DETAILS: You are a silent protagonist , a crow tasked with soul retrieval. In the very beginning you lose a soul and essentially you will die eventually unless you get it back. Also you in an afterworld of sorts? Maybe this is purgatory? I'm not exactly sure. In order to get it back you need to open death's door which only the power of three giant souls will accomplish. The checkpoint system is very well done imo. Your hub area, where you upgrade stuff and occasionally find story side information in is linked to the explorey/fighty world by doors that you uncover as you travel. Between uncovering doors the area between doors is shortened by releasing gates/ladders/etc so if you die it doesn't take too much time to get back to where you were. Also there is no map, which I am told is a Dark Souls thing. This isn't too frustrating as the world feels connected enough for it to be memorable. However because there are some metroidvania elements it would have been nice to mark places you want to go back to once you get the upgrades to traverse the area. Also, the game uses terminology "North, West, etc" but it's a little confusing to tell where directions are because there is no compass and the world is on an angle. It's not super confusing. You can figure out that North is actually Northwest on your screen. Just an itty bitty gripe.

Overall I highly recommend this game. Definitely going on my top favorite games of all time somewhere.

It is a mix of Hack-N-Slash action a la Diablo combined with some exploration and puzzle inspired from Zelda games. Combat plays great and will definitely challenge you. Although quite simple in it's recipe, it remains incredibly effective. It might be lacking a bit in terms of variety of skills and combos at your disposal, but nevertheless, you will never feel bored while engaging in Death's Door combat. Hours will pass like a breeze as you play through the 8 to 10 hours amount of content present in the game, with an additional end game that will entertain you for an additional couple of hours. For those that appreciate a good soundtrack, your ears will be more than satisfied here, as the music really makes the beautiful art direction of the game and slick animations come to an even brighter life. Overall, I highly recommend Death's Door for anyone looking for a really sharp and high quality action adventure top view hack N Slash with a charming story and really high production value, you won't regret giving it a chance ! The overall narrative is pretty light and more or less makes way for the hack n slash game play. With tight controls and a basic level up system, this is an easy title to pick up and play with little hassle. The enemy challenge (bosses in particular) can be a little tough, but plenty fair and the little secrets peppered throughout each level gives plenty of incentive for exploration. But what really captured me was the art design though. From the excellent music to the animation and general feel of the surroundings, this game sets a good tone for the overall experience.

There's not a great deal I'll write other than this is a solid title and a must for those that love their hack n slash RPG's. Looking forward to seeing what these devs come up with next.

I think you should buy this game if you are interested :) I bought the game on sale for around $15, and I think that is a great game for this price. I am going to come out of the gate and say that I was not the biggest fan of the combat. I thought it was serviceable, but for the most part I found myself being aggravated by the dodging and fighting more than I enjoyed it. However, on a somewhat different note, I really really enjoyed the story, atmosphere, and world. The creators did a wonderful job crafting a story that makes you feel like you are just tagging along on a grand adventure with the crow. I also want to say that especially for one section (you will know if you see it) I was greatly of Spirited away - the critically acclaimed studio Ghibli film... I loved it. Also, in a somewhat contrasting viewpoint to my previous critique, I enjoyed the boss fights for the most part. The moves were obviously choreographed, and your interactions with the characters before the fights are great comical relief. The ending of the game is somewhat deeper than the rest of the game, and I believe the creators accomplished what they seemingly set out to do - create a AAA-like indie game with a fantastic story and world. I recommend this game to you if you are interested at all :) Thank you for reading! Expand
