As they try to find a way back, all they are doing is sinking deeper into a nightmare scenario. When they sleep, they attract a terrifying force that sucks the life out of their bodies, but the longer they battle exhaustion and stay awake, the less likely they are to survive... As the survivors try to sleep just enough to stave off fatigue without dying, they slowly go mad and eventually reach the point where they can no longer trust their senses. In time, they can't even tell the difference between reality and a hallucination. Guide the survivors through a randomly generated Arctic base, overcome the severe climate and fight the unfathomable. Distrust is pretty top-notch stuff. It’s the sign of intelligent and well-considered mechanics that something as inherently repetitive as Distrust never once felt tedious to me. Russian publisher Alawar previously gave us last year’s Beholder, a similarly high-concept little gem from their home country. This makes them two-for-two on Steam releases, and I can’t wait to see what other fascinating indies they bring us from their side of the world.

Distrust is a refreshingly unique take on a familiar horror setting, where both players and survivors alike are gradually worn down by a lack of respite, and victory is a hard-fought push to the finish line. Though it's not quite The Thing as billed, Distrust manages to carve out its own fascinating niche with a devious cycle of madness and decay.

If everything goes according to plan and you aren't backed into an inescapable corner, you're looking at a roughly six-hour playthrough. That may seems short, but chances are the vagaries of Distrust's randomization will leaving you taking much longer to reach its end, and even after six hours you'll feel as though you've survived a trial by fire. Victory is a warm feeling in this world of cold.

Do not trust anyone nor yourself! With such philosophy, you will fight in the survival action from the Arctic, where snow and frost are not surprisingly the biggest problem. Distrust plays nicely with human psyche, offers the movie mood in a generated environment. Surprisingly however, you yawn sometimes.

The survival aspect of the game saved my opinion on it. It was a very bitter beginning and I had to get passed a bit of frustration with the comparison to The Thing despite being nothing remotely inspired by it other than the location. As a survival game, Distrust is enjoyable and challenging even when I feel the enemies aren't all that exciting.

Many characters to unlock, many challenges to deal with and very reasonable price.

Not a 10 because of the need for a slightly easier mode in order the play the "Story" without being to focused on not dying from... well from anything !

Having prepared myself to like the game, I did enjoy my first couple of hours in Distrust. I liked the isometric look, the graphics and the overall atmosphere. The problem is that the make-up wears off quickly due to some terrible design choices.

In Distrust your goal is to leave the area in every level. You collect items, solve some simple puzzles and in the meantime try to keep your character fed and rested. You get tired and hungry very fast, so you spend the majority of your time cooking and sleeping. Sleeping will spawn aliens which you can try to kill or run away from. After the 3rd or 4th level, the game becomes very frustrating. Loot is RNG based, so your survival is pretty much predetermined when you start the game. At times, you can find a key and a durable jacket to make the game manageable. On the other hand, you will also have games where you will simply not survive long even if you do everything right. In co-op mode, you cannot share some of the tools which simply doesn’t make sense for an RNG based permadeath survival game. You may have three hammers in your inventory, whereas your friend will die because he doesn’t have a hammer to fix a bed.

Distrust starts strong due to its atmosphere, but falls short of its promises due to bad design.
