Doki Doki Literature Club is a visual novella that masterfully manages to creep up on you, shatter the 4th wall with a sledgehammer and land it on your unsuspecting face.

Doki Doki Literature Club is a mind boggling and hard hitting horror game that takes tried and tested formulas of both visual novels and dating sims and turns them on their heads. The themes and story pack a punch, and stayed with me long after I had finished playing. It may require commitment from some to get through but the reward for those who stick it is more than worth it

The first hour or so are intentionally insufferable. Some of the best horror takes its time establishing what’s normal, because it has to show you what it’s going to break. Without normal, you wouldn’t know what’s weird. Without real, you wouldn’t know what’s surreal. Without victims, you wouldn’t know what’s monstrous. Without the anime dating sim, you wouldn’t know Doki Doki Literature Club.

This game is an interesting one which presents as a common "visual novel" game but in the end presents a totally different approach as the game progress. In the end it feels very mixed with some aspects where the game done well but in other ones it doesn't.

A horror game disguised as a dating sim. First couple of hours are boring and written poorly to the degree of being hard to digest for me, then things get better, but the story is still shallow and the substance plays second fiddle to the form. [01/2018, p.61]

Well. That is not something I am willing to discuss in this review. I don’t even wanna say anything about this game. Just experience it for yourself (not really a review if you don’t talk about the game, I know, but please trust me on this one, ok?).

What I will say though, is that it’s free on steam and is one of the biggest surprises of the year for me. It’s characters, music, graphics, plot—you might be surprised at just how fantastic it all is.

But if you are able to get around the fact that this game is all what you would expect form a cutsie anime visual novel - on the surface level - you´re in for a real treat. Like seriously, this game is exceptional.

Don´t look up anything about the game or you´ll be spoilered in no time. Plus it´s free. Just give it a go. It´ll be worth your time. Trust me.

I don't know what I was expecting when I started playing this game. The trigger warning displayed at the beginning and the "PsychologicalI don't know what I was expecting when I started playing this game. The trigger warning displayed at the beginning and the "Psychological Horror" tag on Steam hint that Doki Doki Literature Club is hiding something darker than its saccharine exterior lets on, but it's hard to imagine what, especially when you're two hours in and the game has still presented you with nothing but light and bouncy music and flirty dialogue typical of the visual novel genre.

I won't reveal Doki Doki Literature Club's secret here, because it's best to go into this one blind.

However, I will say this: Doki Doki Literature Club is not what it seems. And yet, in some ways, it is also exactly what it seems. It is somehow a critique of and an homage to the conventional visual novel/dating sim. It makes perfect sense for lead developer Dan Salvato to cite his "love-hate relationship with anime" as inspiration for creating the game. The cutesy characters and backgrounds are lovingly crafted. Even the name of the game itself is delightfully twee. Doki Doki Literature Club also subverts these kinds of genre conventions, but it's clear that the developers have some affection for the very thing they're lampooning.

While at first glance, the cute female characters are nothing but standard anime tropes, I found each of them gradually growing on me thanks to the excellent writing—one of the game's strong points. Of course, this only made the game's dark turns even more disturbing.

While there are other subversive visual novels out there, I doubt there's anything quite like Doki Doki Literature Club. A unique mix of kawaii and creepy with creative use of breaking the fourth wall, it's a game you won't forget easily.
