The result is a dozen levels that span an incredibly diverse range of locations that eclipse everything you can see in DOOM (2016) in just the first couple hours. Double jump, dash, and wall climbing create the opportunity for platforming puzzles and sprawling worlds that the developers have maximized to their full potential.

Doom Eternal is, in 2020, what Doom 2 was in 1994: one of the best FPS of its generation. Eternal is an incredible and brutal experience that you cannot miss.

Doom Eternal is a monster of a game, uncompromising and purposeful in its decision making. Crucial to its success is that it doesn't feel like it's trying to cater to everyone. Eternal can be unforgiving, and there will no doubt be those who bounce off its razor sharp edges. Yet by not watering itself down, Doom Eternal comes away with an incredible focus. This is a blazingly fast shooter that demands amazing feats of skill. Those willing to baptize themselves in the fire will walk away with the kind of satisfaction that few AAA games have the audacity to give.

I've rarely had so much fun while reviewing a game. The boss fights are as entertaining as the build, Doom icons (pun intended) are introduced with verve, there are countless cool settings, the gunplay is more or less the best in the genre, the combat arenas feel like morbid monkey cage games and the game wraps it all in a sauce of subtle humor and lots and lots of metal. Doom Eternal does nothing weird compared to its predecessor, but this game is much better in almost every way. And part one was already so good.

Doom Eternal does a lot of things, but it's really a masterclass in modern action game design. It improves upon its predecessor in nearly every way and has some of the most visceral, furious combat that gaming has to offer.

Doom Eternal refines where its predecessor was already brilliant. Despite some minor flaws, it's one of the most intense shooters of the year.

In every way, developer Id's new shooter is bigger than its predecessor, more developed, more thought out.

This game represents the beginning of a new era of the FPS genre.

The negative reviews are very funny to read, 90% of them are from people who don't know how to jump and dash. There are no 'platforming puzzles', you just need to have a functional brain in order to progress.

Buy this game if you think killing demons while metal music plays in the background would be fun for you. Don't buy this if you don't know how to play a video game.

Love that there's finally another Doom that takes place on earth and the art style really benefits from it. I think this has much better pacing and progression than 2016. First person platforming may be something you either love or hate, and the stingent requirements for killing demons has a bit of a learning curve. That may turn some newcomers off (that's why it's not a 10/10) but it's personally exactly what I was looking for in a sequel.

Needing the Bethesda account does stink, but I think it's also a bit overblown. You give them your username/email on the first startup then you never have to aknowledge it again. I don't like that it's *required* but it's nowhere near worth review bombing a game for.

The game is totally over engineered. The devs must have sat round patting each other on the back for the ‘bit that they did’.
This is what happens when you assign a game to a team that has no vision or bad project management.
It’s hard to put my finger on what is exactly wrong with it because it is so well put together and runs like a charm.
My gripes are solely gameplay related and range from awful platform mechanics, clunky ui, difficulty presented in a much too frustrating way and the aforementioned over engineering.
It just feels too much like a product and not a doom game

    Disappointing sequel.

Doom 2016 was an exercise in restraint. Gameplay and story were streamlined. Doom Eternal developers thought that adding more game mechanics and things makes a better game but it makes the gameplay unfocused and frustrating.

Too many mechanics (glory kills, chainsaw, freeze bomb, flamethrower, dash) and you are forced to use them if you want to survive. There's too little ammo (your shotgun has 16 rounds at the start) so you have to constantly use the chainsaw animation to get more.

Platforming is frustrating. The story is in your face and the writing is cringe-worthy.

You can only start having fun after dropping to difficulty level, obtaining all the weapons and buying all the ammo upgrades.

If you liked all the Doom games in the past 20 years, it will be hard to adjust to this. What's wrong if you just want to shoot a demon in the face without having to worry about all the additional mechanics.
