Boring puzzles and at times jarring low-budget visuals stir a lot of negative emotions, but all this anger and frustration will be wiped away by the narrative tide of sincere emotions and soothing nostalgia. Ragnar Tornquist creates colorful character, and writes witty dialogue; he knows how to carry on the intrigue, make you laugh and, when the gods of drama demand it, sucker-punch you with full force.

You have to run a lot in Dreamfall Chapters, but it is still an enjoyable story and an ending to a long journey. The story elements are in focus as the puzzles are usually rather simple and straightforward.

Last chapter of a game shouldn’t be “just another adventure”, but a final that nicely ties up all loose threads. Unfortunately, Dreamfall Chapters’ ending leaves enough of those to knit a whole sweater for Christmas. [Issue#211, p.65]

Dreamfall Chapters is a mess of a game, with both story and gameplay segments varying wildly in quality. That said, it is still a must-play for all fans of the series. There are very few games that attempt to weave such an ambitious narrative. [Aug 2016]

Dreamfall Chapters is a satisfactory successor to The Longest Journey and Dreamfall, but not a good enough game in its own right. [09/2016, p.46]

Successful adventure offers a satisfactory ending of a saga. Its advantages include excellent atmosphere and screenwriting, fantastic dubbing and an interesting story. Pity there is also wrong pace of the game in its first half, a lot of unnecessary running, and some not-so-imaginative puzzles. Even though the positives far outweigh the negatives and game can be recommended to adventure fans.

An ambitious sequel to 2006’s Dreamfall, Chapters is worth playing to see how the saga ends but doesn’t hold up as a standalone adventure.

The story is deep and rich in a way that so many triple A games from big name studios are not. Dreamfall and TLJ clearly inspired Funcom's The Secret World MMO. If you enjoy classic Action Adventure games than this it but don't start at chapters. Get The Longest Journey and play the entire storyline. Expand

Not much of a review, because i am too biased.

The longest journey is the best adventure i played, Dreamfall is my favourite storybased game, and chapters just continues.

To be more objective - it is less a "game" and more a "story" - or lets say - game elements won t get in the way of the story too much. TLJ was a better "game" than Dreamfall for sure. - Chapters tries to mix it up a little bit - offering more gameplay than "go from A to B and watch the next cutscene".

chapters looks great, has a great soundtrack and feels very good. If you loved Dreamfall, i am sure you love chapters, too.

The first books were a bit slow but the pace really picks up in book 4. As usual, with Ragnar Tornquist at the helm, the writing is top notch and is a great narrative driven game. The voice acting is well done and the visuals are decent to great. Character models are a bit stiff and movement is a bit wonky at times. There is not much in the way of game play and there is a section with searching for Saga's pictures that was infuriatingly unnecessary. So much so that I quit playing for a couple of weeks and then just slogged through that section to get on with the story.

All in all its a deep and rich story and worth playing to experience. Having been a huge fan of Ragnar's work in the past, this does not disappoint if you go into it understanding that its more narrative than game. For me its an excellent game but not as good as The Longest Journey, Dreamfall. I happen to also really enjoy The Secret World - and wish Ragnar and Martin Bruusgard were still a part of that team.

Being third installment of great adventure series it has so much potential of being fantastic game. And it ends up being mediocre at best.

    To sum it up:

    1) Nothing of consequence happens story-wise in Books 1 & 2. Most characters are uninteresting, dialog is mediocre, themes and story arc from original Dreamfall are not touched at all. Too much pointless running around with no apparent reason. Very little any real content.

    2) The facial and other character animations are just bad. Even when the narrative tries to convey some kind of emotion, the characters just stand still with blank expression on their face. The original Dreamfall had better animations 10 years ago. Also very little humor. No jokes, no witty dialog, nothing. The overall tone of this game is very monotone.

    3) Point & click problems. It's very easy to miss objects you can interact with. Often you know what you're supposed to do, but just can't figure the where to click or the correct order of clicking things.

    4) Slow graphics. Except the animations, the game actually looks quite nice. Unfortunately it has some performance issues. Even in high-end system it can have framerate issues and in many older systems it might be pretty much unplayable. This might be alleviated in future, if they decide to change to newer Unity version.

To be fair, the Kian story arc has some interesting parts even in Books 1 & 2. Also, while Book 3 mostly has the same problems as the previous two books, the story starts to pick up some speed. The game starts to address the story arc from original Dreamfall and even the dialog seems the get better (and wittier) at times.

It has a great commitment to diversity and exploring interesting themes like genocide, fanaticism, and genocide. Unfortunately it's genuinely one of the worst stories I've ever encountered. The first two games had a much greater understanding of character and plot... but this is just a mess and by the end of the 5th episode you're just astounded by how needlessly convoluted and pretentious the whole thing has become. This would be forgiveable if the game-play were halfway-decent, but as a puzzle game it is not. Oh hell no it definitely is not. Expand
