May 24, 2021With the launch of the “Odyssey” expansion, Elite Dangerous has taken on a new life as a next-generation space sim. It now feels truly unprecedented in scope, scale, and fidelity. Over the seven years since the game’s release Elite Dangerous has impressively continued to grow. The best part of it all is that “Odyssey” is just another step in the game’s ongoing evolution. It all comes together to make a space MMO that is a must-play for any fans of the genre. There is something to do for every type of player, whether they want just to build deadly ships, participate in dogfights, maximize a profitable trade route, team up with friends to explore the unknown galaxy, or whatever else.
Jul 7, 2021Elite Dangerous: Odyssey is an ambitious addition to the Elite formula that doesn’t quite hit the highs it should. It instead serves as a preview of what the game may be like in 6 or 12 months from now, and is hard to recommend as it currently is. Personally? I’d wait and see how Frontier Developments improves the game. Let’s face it, there’s still plenty to explore in Horizons.
May 24, 2021Elite Dangerous: Odyssey is an unfinished expansion with some cool ideas in need of a lot of additional iteration and work. As it currently stands the Elite Dangerous PC community is beta testing Odyssey for the inevitable console launch, despite the expansion being advertised as a finished product. Unless they don't mind paying to play in a glorified beta, commanders should stick with Horizons until the dust settles.
May 27, 2021There are so many other issues that Elite Dangerous: Odyssey suffers from that it would be difficult to catalog all of them, but the primary problems are so widespread that it's already evidence enough that the content needs serious repair. Some have compared Odyssey to the infamous launch of No Man's Sky back in 2016, and it's an apt comparison, albeit one that might be a little too generous. Elite Dangerous didn't deliver upon the many promises that were made, but, whereas No Man's Sky was still a serviceable space exploration game, there is essentially nothing in Odyssey that makes up for its many problems. Elite Dangerous fans shouldn't spend their money on Odyssey until Frontier Developments has made some serious improvements.

Based on my playstyle and experience I am having a blast playing Odyssey. However this expansion is fantastic for a niche playerbase in an already niche game and that is sight seeing/exploration. The light atmo effects are beautiful, the space legs make the planets feel more vast and amazing, the new planet gen is improved in my opinion but I do know there are people who do not like it.
However there is nothing else to do meaningfully. They added ground conflict zones which is cool but doesn't add much to the gameplay loop. And trading pilots are ****ed cause there's nothing here for them. Take away the bugs and server crashes this expansion is still missing a lot. Dedicated Explorers will enjoy this expansion if you tend to go find amazing sights. But that's it...
Again I am loving this and feel like it's $40 well spent and if you share my love for exploring then get it you won't regret it.
But if you're a Combat or Trade Pilot, you do a lot of BGS or PowerPlay gameplay, Xeno Hunters, and Cannon Research then don't get this as there is little to no reason for you to do so.

This product is an embarrassment at every level.
I cannot believe they charged money for this train wreck.
This DLC is so bad it has f*cked over the people that didn't even buy it. I don't know what they're doing to Fleet Carriers but they can't get anything right with those. They patched out the dupe exploit so yay I guess.
I used to get a pretty solid 60fps in even the most intense of times, but now frame rates in the single digits is the norm. I'm talking you'll spend most of your time at around 10fps in the lighter and more barren areas. Less anywhere else.
Missions are generated with impossible to complete parameters. You won't even know it's impossible to progress till you arrive on-planet 10 minutes later and find out that the planet they sent you too can't even be disembarked on, or the thing they told you to steal isn't there, or the NPC is hovering 200m under the ground or just flat out not there. Now you'll be force to abandon the mission, you'll have a 100,000cr bounty on your head. Your only mistake was buying this DLC.
Their promised and vaunted new planetary build tech (which they said during the Alpha was total cool you guys, we just haven't added it yet! It's gonna be so big pinky promise!) flat out doesn't work and they have said they have no idea how to fix it. Which has left every celestial object having blurry, unprocessed landscape smeared with grimy layer of Vaseline.
When you can complete a mission they will be disappearing from the mission list to never be seen again with no reward or indication. This has happened during every single session of this game I have attempted since Odyssey has launched.
Spend 2 hours working on your missions to have them disappear from the quest log as you lang on the station to turn them in. These are not quick missions where just walk outside the settlement kill some rats and come back. Traveling is a chore in this game. Each mission will probably take you a half hour to complete.
bugs that make it impossible to log in without getting customer support involved
Disconnects, crashes, bugs bugs bugs at e v e r y s i n g l e turn I can't even stay connected to the game for longer than 30 minutes at a time. You cannot go minutes without a bug that will flat out kill you (I've been dropped through floors several times now) or have to be circumnavigated (if you're lucky you can jump into the old version Horizons of the game, move your character to another system, and jump back into Odyssey) or will just end your play session for that WEEK and you'll need to get customer support involved to be able to play again. Which, at this point, has taken weeks to get a response back.
Loading times are now through the roof. Not much more to say about that. It's ass.
This is Alpha Early Access levels of bad. I cannot stress enough what an embarrassment at every level this product is. If I worked at this studio, I would be embarrassed that people looked at this diarrhea they called a program and said "yup, get it out the door, this baby is READY."
STAY AWAY STAY AWAY STAY AWAY DO NOT BUY THIS STAY A W A Y JESUS I CAN'T SAY THIS ENOUGH
