All the multimedia does is add to an already immersive and intense experience.
This could very well be a prototype for the next generation of city building games to come.

The Guild is another childhood classic that even today convinces with its fantastic gameplay. Its great to spend your time on a dynasty but sometimes gets laggy what hinders the 10 score.

A very impressive economy simulator for a medieval town. It offers so many in depth profession and opportunities that can lead to many playthroughs and challenges, opening new opportunities the longer you play. While the game has become a bit dated, it offers a good afternoon or two of addictive playtime (and even has multiplayer). One of the best economy based games I have ever seen.

The control scheme is bound to scare lots of people away before they see what it has to offer. And it has a lot to offer. It's not pretty, but it's deep.
Both fascinating and addictive to play, and yet has so many rough edges that you might not want to play it at all.
It will take at least a full game or two (or three) before you have any idea what you are doing, but even before you learn the ropes, Europa 1400: The Guild is strangely addictive. [Apr 2003, p.85]
Unique gameplay that combines the life in middle ages, RPG and economy. There are a lot of funny possibilities like being a priest, thief, graveyard warden, but also taking a classic profession. In addition you try to get a job in the authorities for example through bribes. The music fits, the controlling and graphics are good.
But after 10 or 15 hours the game gets repetitive and you saw most of the game already.

This is one of those games in which you are either going to love it or you're going to hate it. Before buying this game you need to ask yourself: Do I sometimes have fantasies about being a olde timey blacksmith? Or do I sometimes wish I cold run my local pub back when Charles still had his head attached? Or do you wonder that you could have been a pompous textile baron in a past life? If you have ever asked these questions then you are probably going to like this game and should waste no more time not having it in your life. That said, it is not without its problems, the gameplay is repetitive, the competitive AI is rather dull at times, and once you have made it there is really nothing else to do. However there is really no other game which falls into the genre of medieval life simulator with an economic focus that is this well done. In short, don't expect a life-changing experience but do expect to have a pleasant weekend followed by extensive research into pre-industrial economies.

Tired of tutorials that ask you to do things but don't tell you where the buttons to do those things are hidden. Here, you discover on your own that you must move around, open doors, explore rooms, locate and click on every merchant, etc. As a result, the game is 95% pixel hunt. While the clock is ticking.
