Not my typical style of game but wanted to try something new. Enjoyed the setup and the progress through this. The names of characters became a little out of control and hard to keep track of. I enjoyed the overworld campaign conquests until the random events started repeating themselves. Combat was fun and engaging, I made it about halfway through the 2nd campaign overall. It's not a AAA title but if you look at the state of AAA games in last years its probably for the better.
Viking was a good game but Rome makes a huge step forward in almost every game system.

I especially like that the choices you make in the game has consequenses, that carries all through the game (and at least once the consequenses can be fatal for your companions) It shows that the devs have respect for the players.

A great game with huge replayability due to the choices you have to make and their consequenses.
The mix between party and legion action is well balanced. The story is well written, good dialogue (with fantastic voice acting for most parts).
The vision of Rome the game delivers is as correct as possible, considering this is a game, not a historical treatise.

Yeah... this game's story was perfect up until the point where i was forced to sacrifice one of my servi or praetorians by burning them on a stake as an offering to some god, totally erasing and destroying the kind of character i was playing, the story was so good until this **** happened. Who the hell thought you should not have other options for this kind of stuff? why force the player to do this? why can't i just kill these pagans instead of sacrificing my own people? as much as i reloaded to a previous state of saves, there was no way to continue in the story, half way through act 3! and if there is and i missed it, i already gave up on it and uninstalled, gameplay was just ok, nothing outstanding. The team tactic fighting part is the highlight of the game, but the strategy part of the game is just badly designed. War becomes a card game, many tasks become repetitive and time wasting, not to mention computer is set to attack you every time when you pacify a region. The long time wasted doing those big map quests eventually worn my patience out.

This title, however, has very narrow parameters which discourage meaningful play let alone player agency. You have a set objective, try anything else -such as preserving a fleet instead of burning it or appropriating arms being smuggled by your adversaries instead of burning them and the game just sends waves of enemy reinforcements until you succumb to sheer boredom.

Your legion starts at half strength. Want to bring it back up to full? No matter how few or how many casualties you take in any given combat, you will be attacked every time you cross the 3/4 mark and knocked back down to half strength. Your legion can gain experience. Does it make any difference? No. Does morale make any noticeable difference? No. Do the cards (sorry, "tactics") make any difference? Not really. Big army wins.

Any effort to improve gameplay was squandered by conventional industry standard and consumer safe design choices. The voice acting is good; However, in persuading others, you can't be witty, charming, and driven. You have to choose one, which will lock you into that path and out of all others. It would have been far more interesting to have dynamic dialogues where you have to try and figure out what sort of approach was most likely to work with guarded, jaded, and intelligent adversaries instead of just being relegated into predetermined outcomes based upon arbitrary criteria.

Could have been great, but as it stands it simply is subpar. The fact that the devs disbanded and went to make NFT games doesn't really come as a surprise.

Gameplay is amazing . Care for every detail is there and love from developers for "good game" is clear. And they did it. Tactically is superior to Divinity games that i love and dialog is written by smarter people.
If you like turn based game and history role play this is at least strong 9/10 if we are tuff but why not be generous and gave it 10 .

Special mention - Logic Arts is disbanding and devs joined company to do NFTs driven games:

I'm not even demanding historical accuracy, I'm just demanding a game set in Rome actually be more historically accurate than Caesar's Legion from FNV.

The problem is the devs paying lip service to repressive Roman social norms, and then doing nothing with them.

Why am I told in char creation that a woman doesn't have a first name, when it literally changes nothing in how the characters address me since they all use the nickname anyhow? Why does the tutorial officer tell me that I will obviously not take part in the fighting as a woman, but then I end up leading Roman soldiers and doing a bit of mass murder without anyone saying anything? It makes no sense and is completely jarring.

If you want to present a digestible, whitewashed, Hollywood Rome then just do that without, yknow, drawing attention to actually how sexist and patriarchal it is, same as you did in Conquistador. At least then the argument premise of "it's fantasy-history" holds ground without the game world feeling cheap and with no weight behind the setting. Or stop being hacks and just have the "woman" choice as an actually meaningful hardmode in your historical video games. Like I can't believe mount and blade is the only game that attempted to do this properly.

The tactical turned based gameplay is wonderful and very addicting. I could play it all day and they added a lot of interested scenarios around it. But unfortunately, the rest of the gameplay isn't on par and gets very repetitive and tedious very quickly. Loot systems are also below average. The good news is that you can ignore most of that and focus on the good parts.

Another solid entry in the Expeditions series. After the slight disappointment of Viking, I enjoyed Rome as much as Conquistador.

Pros: Enjoyable story and setting, logical and interesting characters, fun gameplay, nice soundtrack (but still not as good as Conquistador's). The squad combat is very enjoyable and I really liked the talent trees and armor customization implementation.

Cons: There are a lot of mechanics to keep track of, but most are fairly shallow like the camp upgrades, resource management, and strategems. Looting is also an unnecessary burden; running around clicking bodies is not fun, just auto-loot at the end of the fight and show what you got. But my biggest complain is the presence of only four playable classes. The game really would have benefited from perhaps one or two classes from each region to add more flavor. Instead it felt like a chore when I had to use the B-team for pacification missions when it would have been the perfect opportunity for experimentation. My advice to the developer would be cut some of the more superfluous strategy elements and focus on enriching the squad battles.

Expeditions: Rome touches a bit of everything and, if it does not succeed in making a perfect copy on its conquest and exploration component, it does rather well on its tactical combats and its very pleasant story to follow. If you're not too sensitive to technique and some heaviness in the game's pace, you should have a good time in the heart of the Roman Empire, building your own legend and pursuing your quest for revenge.
