For fans of difficult side-scroller games, Eyes in the Dark: The Curious Case of Victoria Bloom is a fantastic challenge. The emotional and heartfelt storyline compels the player to keep exploring, while the unique and intricate art style of the characters and background have produced a quality adventure that is unlike many other options currently available for the genre.

Eyes in the Dark doesn’t exactly reinvent roguelikes or twin stick shooters so much as it simply takes good parts of those things and ties it up neatly in a darkly humored style, both charming and creepy.

There is a line, an imaginary line that crosses the process of creation. The aim of the creator is to stop right on that boundary. Stopping too soon would mean a lack of faith in the project; too late, an excess of confidence. Eyes in the Dark was so close to stopping on that line, but it has indeed overshot it, even if not that much. This doesn't mean that the work of the Under The Stairs team isn't worth a dime. The complete opposite. Their aim has to be adjusted, but the track is the right one.

Eyes in the Dark is a small but feisty mix of a roguelite and a 2D platformer. It’s atmosphere, art style and engaging gameplay make up for the lack of originality and not the best controls (controller highly recommended!).

Victoria Bloom's "visit" to her grandfather's home is a heart-pounding journey and, net of a series of limitations, it proved to be fun to play and able to amaze, thanks above all to a refined graphic style that certainly does not go unnoticed. In other words, if you are passionate about the genre of reference you could calmly give it a chance.

Eyes in the Dark is a great little roguelike platformer whose clever upgrades system and unique presentation are enough for it to stand out in a crowd. Although the Impediments system can leave your experience a bit too at the mercy of RNG, overall the variety of upgrades and difficulty curve ensured that Eyes in the Dark remained a fair and fun experience. If you are seeking a new roguelike to get invested in, you should definitely consider a trip to Bloom Manor.
