Unfortunately, there isn't much new to see. Routes and environments taken over 1:1 from last year, including NPCs or extras who are on the routes. There are also no new radio messages, everything like 2021!

F1 Life is as useless as a pimple on your elbow. These resources should have been used differently. Why are there no Classic F1 Cars? Why no F3? Why not a way to create a promotion

F1 Life is as useless as a pimple on your elbow. These resources should have been used differently. Why are there no Classic F1 Cars? Why no F3? Why not a way to create a promotion from an F3 class to F2 and eventually to F1 (without story mode but maybe as a campaign?) ? Why are there no alternatives to classic routes?

The added value of this game is unfortunately limited to the F1 cars, unfortunately. With EA (I don't know if this is a reason) in the wrong direction. This game is a step backwards.

Unnecessary micro transactions leave a sour taste… the AI although an improvement over the last game is still a mess, so both playing offline and on when you do happen to find a race is not worth the time.

I’ve put in over 400 hours in he last two games and the same problems that plagued those games are still very much here… a game full of potential as the driving model is fantastic but the bugs and lack of a stable online structure will leave you bored and frustrated very quickly.

This is also coupled with predatory microtransactions that fleece you for money at every turn.

Sadly all of this covers up some genuinely impressive progression in AI programming, with more natural mistakes that make for a more immersive experience - on the rare occasions the game is playable.

At time of writing, EA has published a roadmap for fixing, but this isn't good enough for a full price game - especially one that is so graphically dated, expensive and so laden with predatory microtransactions.

Do not let your children play or purchase this. It's filled with microtransactions for cosmetic items with the aim to get them to spend.

The real kicker is the audacity of the creative director moaning last year on twitter that the 2021 game didn't win an award at a gameshow. That entitled mentality for expecting praise after pumping out the same old rubbish sums up this release from EA/Codemasters well.

The audio team cry about wanting only "constructive criticism" AKA nothing negative to be said on the official forums when challenged on why the game sounds like it was made by a deaf man. Year after year they're told what people want and fail to deliver authentic or real sounds that amateur people can do a better job of in the likes of Assetto Corsa.

    Getting straight to the point…

    - Audio is wrong. Over 10 years of making the game and they do not get the onboard engine sounds to match the tv broadcast audio. (all sorts of made up excuses for this)
    - Incorrect tracks. They fixed a few and used it as a selling feature but it is the bare minimum to have tracks that are reflective of real life. (Spa still 10 years old)
    - Over saturated cartoony graphics. Looks like its made for previous gen and not current or "next gen".
    - Same rubbish "engineer" lines. They changed the voiceover but got it to repeat the same lines.
    - No official HUD from TV in an official game is laughable.
    - Timing system broken (ever since F1 2010). F1 games from other developers from 16 years ago allowed you to compare lap times to fastest in session or pole yet in this game you can only ever see your sector times against your own lap time.

This really is scraping the barrel. Zero passion for the developer and that was before EA got involved.

This year they decided to add "Super cars" and buying clothes and furniture also known as "F1 Life" to the game which is crazy considering all of the above that isnt fixed.

They also specifically designed the game to exploit children and those who are mentally vulnerable by selling cosmetic items like clothes, hats, glasses and couches (you read that right, home furniture in an F1 game).

I can only hope F1 and FOM see this for what it is and get rid of this rubbish developer and team. Mather/Jeal and all the others should be confined to the scrap heap of history as failures.

Pathetic game and a well deserved: 0/10

Besides that, there isn't any valuable content added. The F1 Life stuff is useless nonsense to give micro transactions a platform, but you can completely ignore that stuff, as well as the super cars. Yeah you can drive with these fancy cars on the f1 tracks, but the physics are bad and the modes are rather limited. They should have put the effort into another story-mode, or add F3, to be able to play a full career.

So yeah: Base gameplay is updated and enjoyable (with some cool, but small additions), besides that a rather lazy Update to F1 2021.

Yearly releases are always slightly difficult to review. Do you review the year-on-year update or the release as if it was a standalone. I think ultimately a bit of a both and you would probably be disappointed with either.

Bugs - At release there are a number of game breaking and annoying bugs. Particularly on PC we're missing any proper rumble feedback on controllers and many wheel/pedal set ups are causing big performance issues. There are also many bugs related to HDR. All of this is before even looking into the gameplay. It's also worth noting that the new EA answers forum seems to be atrocious compared to the old Codemasters forum. Glad they saved a buck eh..

Graphics - I'm not usually too harsh on the graphics but ultimately this is a very last generation release. If you ignore the relatively pointless ray-tracing (where you just have to use a poor implementation of DLSS) the visual of the game as a whole are just poor. The models and liveries look ok but there are so many lacking area. The game still presents a bit cartoony due to the lighting method they use, the skyboxes are ridiculously low resolution and end up looking blocky and the wet weather is downright shameful for a series this mature. The track barely evolves, real vfx water spray is non-existent (instead relying on camera techniques), the rain looks like strange dark smoke hanging in the air. Even project-cars 2 (a series they own!) got this much better about 6 years ago. I think even the old F1 games of the PS4 era looked better in this regard. The graphics engine needs a big overhaul next time round and most would appreciate some patch work even for this one.

Gameplay - Honestly, so little has changed from last time that there's not much to add. The physics model is still in that accessible semi-sim state. Airflow and downforce are not simulated in real-time but rather grip values applied depending on things that change. I'm not a super-sim guy so this works relatively fine for me, apart from in wet-weather where the track surface seems to have no impact on driving what-so-ever. Pad driving at release is worse with a very large built-in deadzone which makes quick change of direction very difficult. The devs also seem to focus a little too much on a loose back-end and making traction tricky. The wheels spin probably to often compared to the real thing.

Career mode is basically identical and has the same issues with driver stats getting messed up by facility upgrades. I was certainly hoping to see big leaps forward. Following the trajectory of the FIFA career mode over the last 10 years, I'm very concerned that CM will follow suit and focus on other micro-transaction driven modes.

Audio - In-car audio is generally good and I would say gets better each release. They also include a 'cinematic' mix now, likely for those that like it sounding more like Netflix. The external audio however is a constant disappointment. So much of the sound complexity that you get watching the cars live is missing and they end up sounding like hairdryers which makes replays difficult to watch. Certainly an area that needs a big up-lift, to help with watching e-racing if anything! New soundtrack isn't bad though.

F1 Life - There's nothing to review. It's not a thing. Couple of poorly modelled supercars/2 minute challenges. If you spend money on coins to buy the 'items' to place around your 'home' or avatar 'clothes', you likely have a problem that needs medical help.

Overall - I've not been this disappointed since F1 2015. A game they knew was awful but charged far too much for. The year-on-year updates to visuals/gameplay/career are almost non-existent to my eye and with the EA mandated price increase it just feels like theft if you own the previous game. As a standalone and if CM/EA can get the wide range of bugs fixed then the game isn't terrible. It looks poor but plays well enough and the racing is perhaps enough to justify a middling 5 rating.

Formula 1 has had a big makeover this season, but that's not really the case for F1 22. The game gets a few nice extra's with F1 Life, such as racing with Supercars, but it isn't groundbreaking. Codemasters has built the game on a solid foundation however and the career modes are still excellent and expanded. The racing is also improved a bit, but not as much as in the real sport itself. F1 22 isn't the revolution that fans maybe expected, but it's a good evolution, especially if you like to game in VR.
