Thanks, Ubisoft Montreal, for getting this right on the first try, because this is undoubtedly the only time it will be fresh and exciting. Still, the degree of creativity and the load of ideas on display really demonstrates which ways you can treat your source material inventively via spin-offs or DLCs. I really could get used to that.

This game is pure irony: story, dialogue, music, graphics... everything recalls the craziest clichés of the 80s.

Like wandering through a theme park dedicated to the excess of 80s blockbuster entertainment, Blood Dragon takes Far Cry’s proven gameplay formula and adds humour, a new coat of paint and a script free from qualms of narrative dissonance.

It's Far Cry 3 dressed as trashily as you can imagine; the joke only goes so far, but it's definitely fun to play. [July 2013, p.90]

It´s a poor man's Far Cry 3 without the stunning vistas and cut mechanics, but it´s also a fun homage to the 80s and Action Hero movies, all while delivering a nice and straightforward shooter.

I really thought that Blood Dragon would quickly become too much, but I'm surprised that it was able to make me laugh all the way through this heavily deformed and 80's enriched Far Cry 3. It goes in all directions, and at great length, to charm all over-the top, punchline riddled, references fans. A smart and refreshing stand-alone take.

Even though Blood Dragon is packed with the relaxed charm of the 80ies, it just doesn't is enough to entertain in the end. It lacks content and variation and it doesn't even look good. This is nowhere near the awesomeness that is Far Cry 3.

A game made without push financial constraints and possibly involve someone going on a holiday and getting a bit too high.

There's a lot of cheesy combat dialog involved, so if you like being a serious tightass, or just don't like having fun, this game is not for you.

Blood Dragon is pretty much Far Cry 3 in a different setting. You'll find the exact same mechanics and engines.

However, it's fun. It's cheesy, and it's the point. It's funny too (the tutorial gets a special mention for enraging your character). In fact, I found it better than Far Cry 3 simply because it was such a change from the usual things we see in video games. Our character in FC3 I found was too generic to be enjoyable I remember someone saying his only talent was being a professional A&F T-shirt wearer.

But in Blood Dragon... you're a goddamn Mark IV Cyborg and ain't nobody gonna with you. That's the premise. Everything in the game is meant to be a joke, from the robotic enemies delivering lines like "Ho-ly... crAP" in a monotonous voice, to cyber sharks in the water... everything is a joke, and everything is fun.

Expect the game to be quite short. The price pretty much reflects the length.

The only problem I can find is that there's a synthetic visual filter that you can't turn off. It turns on very fine horizontal bars to simulate an old TV screen. Not everyone will like it.

Blood Dragon is one big panchromatic parody of bad SciFi and bad game mechanics. You're going to do some things that sound boring (because they are). For example, you're going to be forced to collect all of the items in the world and do all of the side-missions in order to upgrade your weapons to the max But that's not by accident, it's all completely deliberate, because the real stars of this game are the weapons themselves. The weapons start off over powered and just get more powerful from there. Near the end of the game you acquire a compact Death Star in the form of an arm bracelet that looks like the blade from Krull and disintegrates anything it touches again, it's a parody! It's not supposed to be fair, or challenging, or make sense it's just supposed to make you laugh. So, have fun! Expand

    An outstanding, bodacious game dude!

FAR CRY 3: BLOOD DRAGON is the delinquent spawn of Far Cry 3. It's based on the main game and therefore shares the graphics, mechanics, and gameplay style of its progenitor -- but with added lunacy. Unlike FC3, FC3BD does not take itself at all seriously and is a riot from start to finish. Set in a parodic 80s SF action movie world it features cyber-soldiers, cyber-sharks, and yes, you've guessed it, cyber-dragons. The emphasis is on guns blazing although there are missions that require stealth as well. The dialogue is often funny, sometimes hilarious, and the story and voice acting are pretty good too. It's a fairly short game, but it's not bad value for money (I got it for free, as part of the Ubisoft 30 celebrations so I'm not complaining). I enjoyed FC3BD every bit as much as FC3, perhaps even more so in some respects; mainly because of the emphasis on humour. It's a laugh, it's great fun, and the number of collectibles isn't ridiculous (I collected all of them). Highly recommended.
