Ghost of a Tale is a game that feels special. A really personal piece of work with an incredible level and art design that flees, like a mouse, from the action to focus, almost entirely, on exploration.
By ignoring generic GameDesign-Decisions of the current Era of video games (Minimap and Markers for orientation, Skilltrees for more success with progression, a lot of interchangeable loot to keep you busy with your inventory, ...), SeithCG managed to create a unique Game experience. This fundament is enriched and given more personality by the beautifully looking World, a fresh setting, and it's very own humour. Overall the game fells harmonic through all its decisions and is therefore offering an original adventure.
Ghost of a Tale is such a unique and captivating looking game that it deserves your attention for its aesthetics alone. Graphics don't make a game, of course, and happily, Ghost of a Tale has enough story and RPG gameplay to keep you entertained throughout. It's quite an achievement for a small team, and a reminder that not every indie game needs to be a blob of pixels in search of a retro niche.
Due to very basic enemy AI Ghost of a Tale is not a particularly good stealth game, but its fairy tale charm is irresistible and although I worked hard for hours to escape the fortress, I was leaving it with genuine sorrow. [05/2018, p.78]
It's an absolutely lovely game. I love everything about it: the graphics, the story, the lore, the humor, the character design. I love that everyone you meet has their own story. And it's one of the few games where you being a bard actually get to perform and use your singing to advance.
I had no glitches (but I played it in 2020) and enjoyed it a lot.
Cons:
- I had to use my husband's PC to play it, it didn't run on my notebook.
- You shouldn't play it if you're not acquainted with stealth games or don't like them and if you don't know how to adjust your screen (otherwise you would end up thinking it's a "boring amateur attempt"). And the game starts in the prison in the dungeon, so it WILL be dark and scary and you'll have to learn how to sneak past the guards).
- Please also note that this game is also about exploration, so it won't take you by the hand and explain everything to you, you'll have to use your brain (though you can get some hints) and you'll have a lot of running around to get back to where you couldn't get/open something or you have talk to someone. So some people may find it boring to have to go back and enjoy all the lovely designed locations to advance. I don't. It was fun to explore this world.
I'm totally in love with it and waiting to buy the next game.
Ghost of a Tale
7 hours of idk what to do
Ghost of a Tale is a good game, but it definitely isn’t for everybody..
And im one of those people…
It wont hold your hand, you wont know where to go to get what you need off of much more than remembering seeing something somewhere.
that being said, I can appreciate the good that is here!
You play as a mouse in a world full of rats, you escape a jail cell and youre in search of your wife…
This is a bit of a horror stealth game, you sneak, distract, steal, run and hide, trying to not gain attention, but I found this to be pretty impossible for the most part… this definitely isn’t a game for those that are impatient or easily annoyed as ghost of a tale will annoy you…
At first Ghost of a Tale seemed like something I could get into, search all the rooms you can, go forward, gtting keys and clothing items to increase your stats, find all of its secrets, but the moment it opens up into a souls like world with everything inter connecting is wher Ghost of a Tale started to lose me..
At that is a very personally me, as I find Ghost of a Tale to be a good stealth game, if you have the patience, this game is a beautiful stealth hidden gem.. the mechanics are great, the gameplay is tense… you can venture down different paths to unlock abilities to put guards to sleep, complete quests and steal coins to unlock helpful items such as maps.. though really, this game feels like a maze.. pun intended.. a map rarely helps, its still really confusing getting around in this game even after you’ve been through it.. I still found myself unsure which corner to turn to get ot a spot I know ive been to.. to add to the frustration, much like a hitman game you have to save a lot when you make progress, it isn’t as simple as unlocking a path or gaining an important key or item for the game to save, the game will only save after dialog, or you can manually save while your hiding after you’ve been detected and lose line of sight.. and back to the diaglog, none of its voice acted, and with such a colorful cast of characters, I feel like this would’ve been a nice touch to add to the overall polish feel **** of a tale…
Ghost of a Tale is a good stealth game.
But again, it may be a game that frustrates you more than intrigues..
And if you are one of those players who get intrigued, youll be rewarded with how well this game comes together,
I give Ghost of a Tale
a 7/10
Pro:
Wonderful graphics and cute mouse.
Con:
Unplayable
Boring
It's too dark. You do not see, but your enemy does.
Nothing helps
Nowhere is maps
The enemy kill, but you can not kill anybody.
Performance problems. When filling a new area, it stumbles (i7 6700, 16gb ram 256gb ssd)
Wasted money.
This is weak indie game, amateur attempt
Pros: Pretty-ish
Cons:
Game forced me to disable an unused joystick before I could navigate main menu.
Could get into hiding place easily first time, but I was forced to crouch to bring up the prompt to enter the same place a second time
Guard remains un-alert no matter what I do - I'm banging on the abrs and flashing my candle on and off and shouting 'let me out you dirty scr3ws' (in my head).
If this is the standard of the game in the first 20 minutes of trying to play then it's going to be uninstalled. I refunded it once before (on Steam, and didn't have any fun) but got it free with GoG.
