Ghostwire: Tokyo is not a bad game by any standard. It's pretty, it's fun, and it follows a formula that has proven to be successful even if it's overdone by this point. As I played through it for this review I found myself alternating between enjoying myself and being frustrated with its shortcomings. There is a potentially brilliant horror/detective game buried under all the superfluous side quests and pointless collectibles, and each time I caught a glimpse of it, I find myself wondering about what could have been.

Ghostwire: Tokyo intrigues with Japanese mythology and a gorgeous open world, whereas its gameplay is not fully developed.

Fun combat and a sophisticated city burdened with the unfulfilled potential of a far scarier experience.

This isn’t the first game to offer a dense, incredibly detailed rendering of Tokyo, but maybe it’s the first to make you feel like all of that work isn’t window dressing.

The unique setting really helps to lift Ghostwire: Tokyo from myriad of problems such as a plain open-world design and lackluster combat. If you love Japan and mystical powers, then Ghostwire can be just the game you're looking for.

Although visually a true love letter to the capital of Japan, the lack of enemies, frightening moments and clumsy combat somewhat spoils the experience. Be prepared for outdated mechanics and more obscure narration.

The main story soon falls into repetition, and its side content is bloated with busywork, but exploring and fighting your way through Tango’s eerie, detailed rendition of Shibuya is where Ghostwire: Tokyo shines.

Ghostwire: Tokyo doesn't have any major flaws that would make it a huge disappointment. It may not fascinate with its gameplay and repetitive action, but thanks to its excellent atmosphere, impressive realization of Japanese lore, and sometimes entertaining combat, it manages to outperform the average with ease.

Ghostwire: Tokyo isn’t bad or broken. It’s just a game that’s not particularly ambitious and almost feels at odds with itself, leaving it with a lot of wasted potential. It might yield a couple of interesting online searches if you’re uninitiated in Japanese folklore, and you can pet lots of dogs and cats, but there are ways to go about doing those things without sitting through Akito’s snoozefest of a tale.

  1. In a roundabout way, this is a mission success for hands-off Mikami - Ghostwire certainly doesn’t feel like something he’s made. It’s too baggy, too loose, lacking the powerhouse momentum I associate with his previous work. What’s here just never clicks fully into place: a beautiful setting, tactile combat, tantalising hints of the beyond, but not enough to populate a city this big, leaving stodge to fill the vacuum. Mikami’s tinkling ivories aside, Ghostwire is a tad too discordant.

Ghostwire: Tokyo is an intriguing investigative thriller where players weave elemental magic against angry apparitions in a Tokyo-inspired limbo spirit world.

Beautiful and fun game from same studio, that made The Evil Within. They know exactly how to make mysterious and unique atmosphere. Unlike TheBeautiful and fun game from same studio, that made The Evil Within. They know exactly how to make mysterious and unique atmosphere. Unlike The Evil Within, it's not horror game, it's more action-adventure, but it definitely has some horror elements here and there. Very cool creature and boss designs, just as in The Evil Within, very creative. I haven't finished it yet, but after 7 hours of gameplay i can easily recommend it, if you are looking for something unique to play. Full Review »

Nothing extremely special, but these days, hardly anything is anyway. Still better than most AAA games of 2022, so there's that.
