In Grim Fandango Remastered, one of the best games of all time has been resurrected for modern audiences. It’s still a classic, and it absolutely belongs on every gamer’s (digital) shelf.

Gorgeously enough, the simplistic notion that this is merely a product of someone’s pleasantly twisted imagination overqualifies as entertainment. It's fu.king art and I love it.

You would complain on the not-remade backgrounds and cutscenes. You would complain on the stretched 16:9 option. You would, but you shouldn't: Grim Fandango Remastered is a great effort of bringing back one of the best adventure games ever made, with nice improvements and a really interesting dev commentary.

Bringing Grim Fandango back to the land of the dead is a welcoming move. LucasArts' classic 3D adventure is still very entertaining due to the atmospheric music, the charming characters, the intense story and the unique expression. The remastered version improves the 3D models with updated graphics, but sadly this is not true for the cinematic cutscenes and all backgrounds in the game. They are identical to the original version presented in 4:3 aspect ratio and seems rather blurry compared to the 3D models.

Even if the mechanisms of this game seem a little dated now, we're reminded how the story and its characters are timeless in their good humour and quality, and in that respect, this Remaster should hold almost as much joy for newcomers as it does for returning fans.

Despite its errors and incomplete nature Grim Fandango is a fantastic adventure that you probably fall in love with. Unless you already loved Manny from before.

Charming as the characters are, I found Grim Fandango’s gameplay intermittently grating. Some of the puzzles in the game are so idiosyncratic that they seem predicated less on the deployment of practical reasoning than on the achievement of a mystical mind-meld with the game’s project lead, Tim Schafer, and the rest of the developers.

Nostalgia aside, this is still one of the best adventure games ever created. However, I've noticed two differing styles of understandingNostalgia aside, this is still one of the best adventure games ever created. However, I've noticed two differing styles of understanding this...

1.) Those who expect a very logical, concise set of puzzles, with a nice wrapping of a story around it.
2.) Those who want to explore the nuances of the game. The style. The ambiance. The way that the game is structured. The "reading between the lines" of the morals, and themes of the story itself...

If you're in category #1? Avoid this game at all costs. The game is about the sum of the parts being greater than an equal to the whole. (Much in the same way that Animal Farm is much more than just a story about talking animals running amok...) Some of the puzzles are just...odd. They don't seem to make 100% logical sense, and the game certainly isn't going to highlight the puzzle piece with a glowing exclamation point, or halo to let you know what you've missed.

But...if you're in the second category, and you haven't played this yet? Then why, oh why, in the name of all things holy or not, are you even bothering to read this review? Get on your favorite platform, and get this ASAP. You'll be rewarded with the texture, style, and nuance of a finely crafted masterpiece.

Playing Grim Fandango isn't about the jaw dropping graphics, or the smooth textures, or the latest in whiz-bang technology. (Which is what a lot of people who aren't steeped in the adventure genre don't quite get...) This game is about the Land of the Dead. It's about Manny Calavera. It's about the questions that plague everyone regarding life...death...and beyond.

Very well written dialogue with clever jokes and a bit of cynicism and dark humour thrown in once in a while.

The presentation is top-notch. Character design, music, voice acting and environments (though those are quite a low resolution) are all pretty much flawless.

For such an old game it has aged very well. Graphics are OK, nothing to write home about, but nothing to complain about either. The 4:3 aspect ratio lock is unfortunate but ultimately understandable. The game is of a decent length for the asking price.

This game is worth your time and money if you like point & click adventure style games and/or a decently sized single player experience with extremely good writing.

One of the best games I've ever played, and that's not nostalgia talking; I didn't play games at the time the original came out.

I wish they could have done the game 16:9 just like CAPCOM did with Resident Evil HD but still, the game is really awesome and makes u forget about these sort of things

The characters, story line, graphics and atmosphere are brilliant.

The thing that really bugged me is the absence of logic in solving some of the puzzles and the way to solve them is simply going around clicking everything on everything and hoping that something works. I'm not a fan of going around for an hour and searching for that one thing you need to click on to progress, so I used a walkthrough for a lot of the game and by last quarter of the game it just really became frustrating for me so once stuck I didn't bother spending any time thinking what else I can do and simply referred to the walkthrough. I like challenges but prefer to spend my time on the ones that have logic in them. Overall, the game is quite brilliant in other ways and is definitely worth playing.

The remaster hardly remastered anything at all. The backgrounds are still prerendered, propably in higher resolution. So are the cutscenes. It looks even morse now with the crisp colourful 3d models standing out of the scenery. Textures are still with minimalistic details. I expected more, and am disappointed.
But overall - the game is brilliant, but remaster is more of a re-packaging of the same thing.

This Remaster is not good. It's buggy, removes music at key moments (like central characters dying), and does not offer the original music. Not only does it not fix bugs present in the original game, it adds additional bugs on top of them.

When asked why the original music was not included as an option, the producer at Double Fine replied that sizes needed to be kept down for the PlayStation Vita, and they didn't want to offer something on the PC without it also being available on the Vita.

The updated textures are ok, but comparable fan projects have been available for years. This isn't a good release.
