Heroes has a ton of depth, it's very well balanced (though not perfect), and nearly every cast member is a blast to play. It achieves almost everything it sets out to accomplish, so I really hope it catches on with the non-believers and continues to grow.

Heroes of the Storm Has some small flaws (mainly associated with micro-transactions and the technical side) but all in all is a very good game. It doesn't copy things from other games and freshens up the MOBA genre in a really satisfying way. While playing HOTS I have never felt alienated, bored or unnecessary.

If you’re both a fan of the MOBA genre and Blizzard’s various properties, there’s no reason you shouldn’t check Heroes of the Storm out. It may seem like Blizzard’s just got another “me too” on its hands at first glance, but there’s enough to set this MOBA apart from the rest and it all combines together to make for a distinct and thoroughly fun experience that no fan of the genre should miss.
  5. Heroes of the Storm offers a different MOBA experience with iconic Blizzard characters. Heroes of the Storm doesn’t contain gold and gold farm, level based character progress, and inventory system unlike other MOBA’s. It has it's own cleverly designed rules.

The most any studio has done to open up a complex genre to a new audience. Inviting, entertaining, and deceptively deep.

Perhaps with time Heroes of the Storm can age into something great, for now it’s worth checking out if you want to experience a different take on a popular genre.

I see that my '9' rating is relatively high. But, Heroes of the Storm has become a part of my day.

To address some criticisms from other writeups, I'll say that I've never felt tempted to spend money in the cash store. I might agree that the prices are outrageous, but by grinding in-game gold, I've bought 24 heroes, leaving 21 that I don't own. I've bought two 'master' skins, which are as expensive as the most expensive heroes, so basically I've gotten to the point of impulsively buying cosmetics. Never have I been tempted to buy anything with cash. There are no pay-to-pown temptations, no pay gates to content. Actually, I think there are some skins that come with some sort of themed abilities, and I don't want anybody to feel misled about that, but to me this looks like an excuse to spend money, for those who want to spend money. If you are a completist who has to own everything in the shop, then maybe that's different. For me, this game is entirely free to play, it's that simple.

Next, how do we compare this to League of Legends and Dota 2? Well, it seems like in this genre all these games have kind of simplified graphics. Maybe they're tuned to play on a larger variety of hardware, and not lag, etc. 'Heroes' is like the others in this respect. And, movement and basic attacks are right-clicks, while hero abilities are triggered by the QWE keys (initially) and left-clicks. So the gameplay is similar as far as the controls. And as far as the idea of two teams of five heroes, facing off across a map, split into a small number of lanes, etc. You know, minion waves march across the lanes, and defensive structures for both teams defend 'their' half of the map. I'm no expert on Lol or Dota 2, though I've played a few games of each. In 'Heroes', it's easy to gain a slight advantage, but it's hard to snowball to an unfair one. Lots of the time, teams are within touching distance, and I think the other games are more known for the phenomenon of one player falling behind and becoming a liability.

Here are some remarks that won't be for those who don't even know what MOBAs are and why they're all the rage: In 'Heroes', each map is dotted with mercenary camps, which are minor aids to your pushing power, capable of pushing through defences if left unchecked. The maps, are themed around their 'objectives', and there is laning on top of those objectives, on top of levelling, and the 'things to do' never stops. I appreciate that there are smaller maps, forcing you to battle intently for big consequences, but the maps are different. A game is just 15 to 20 minutes. I really find that most rounds remain winnable for either team until a very advanced stage. I've seen huge comebacks, I've seen decisive late-game teamfights. I've seen no filler, here.

Maybe MOBAs are a very specific sort of game that you either are into or not. Must you play this, must you experience this? Maybe not. Where I'm at, I reached max level (40) relatively quickly, and there's nothing much else to gain after that other than leveling up individual heroes for the odd gold bonus. There's a competetive ladder, where I've won over 100 games, so I'm movin' on up. Only when you get off of the bottom rungs of that so-called 'Hero League', as I now have, do you find that no all of your teammates are morons. There is an ironclad rule, that if somebody is chatting, they're reminding you that everybody playing the game is a moron. I honestly can see no redeeming value for chat, here, at all. Like it's been removed from Hearthstone, which seems draconian, but again, honestly, etc. Yet I played a few team games (where all five players are queued up as a team) where we used voice chat, and shockingly I had fallen in with chaming wonderful dudes. Even the time that we lost a game! weird. But in Hero League you queue up along or with one other person, and get thrown into a team of five. Again, once you move up, you get among serious players but I've played for several weeks to get to this point. BTW it's fascinating how much variety and depth there is to the game, as I still don't call myself actually *good*, by any stretch! I think that clearly, a lot of complexities from other mobas are ironed out or removed completely. But, learning the heroes and maps is fun and has depth to it. And, it DOES require you to concentrate and put your best effort in to be the kind of player who's an asset to your team instead of a hindrance.

From me, then, this is recommended to anyone who has even considered a MOBA. Is it really a 9? Yes, heck, I didn't toss it a '10'. I'm intimidated at how people have been writing off this game, and I wonder whether winning or losing some online match with 4 random anonymous teammates will hardly matter either way. I think a permanent team of five mates ready to play seems, at this point, like the ideal here, to me. And it's a totally different experience using voice chat -- which might be a totally unfair advantage, too!

First, while I really enjoy the vs AI matchmaking of the game, and can congratulate them on a fairly regular stream of heroes being released, it unfortunate that they overlook several big aspects of the game.

First, they treat most of their loyal players like **** They regularly give away heroes that people paid real money for for free during promotions. While it absolutely makes sense to soften the burden of new players into a constantly evolving games, giving away heroes that are month or so old for free is basically a big middle finger to active players.

Second, things like this that dissuade regular players from sticking around often leads to a bigger problem of insanely long queue times. Playing ranked frequently requires queue times near 5-7 minutes, which is rediculous, because half the time you actually join a game the gap between MMR rating is pretty huge. 1 Diamond, 2 gold, a silver, and a bronze or so.... If they're doing that, then why did I wait so long?? Just throw me into the first 5 people that queue, right? -.-

Third, I would argue that this game is less toxic than League of Legends. That's pretty important, since LoL is pretty terrible in that regard. It is nice to have a play system where an accidental death isn't the end of keeping up. On the otherhand, the player base is maybe only minorly better, and most toxicity tends to dwell near ranked like most games, which takes forever to join games in.

Fourth, and finally, the skins in this game are huge missed opportunity. The design team and the production managers are honestly just really weird. They sign off on weird skin designs regularly. Everyones style and appeal is different. There is surely some you'd love. But even on the ones that are good and appealing to you, they end up choosing just the ugliest alternate colors; All solid green, all red, no darker tones and weird designs kind of ruin it. The best ones tend to be the Master skins that are available for in-game currency only and have high level requirements. It's nice, but begs the question of why. If they had any sense, they'd just tap into Blizzard's trove of original game gear sets, designs and themes and double their skin inventory just based off that.

All in all, its a fun game if you're a bored Blizzard fan. Otherwise, it's just a strange MOBA that fails to live up to its potential and doesn't treat their loyal players well. I'd avoid it if you haven't already.

Every 2 weeks you either pay 15k gold (which takes way more than that to make), spend 10$ in the new hero, or queue with 4 friends and tryhard or you lose.

It's the most disgusting business model ever, it's somehow even worse than league of legends, where releasing broken heroes was somewhat negated by the fact there were 100+ of them.

Blizzard does nothing to improve it's gameplay, just trying to dig a bit more gold out of it. New heroes (paid) one stronger than another, makes the game unbalanced as any other game is. Example is pretty simple: they release a new hero, which is rly OP so that ppl buy it and use it, while Illidan, which was in game since it's launch, is now a piece of trash, and noone wasnts to rework it, making this hero unplayable. this game is not about the strategy, teamplay and good pick combination, it's a competition of who's the dumbest of our players to buy and own each and every new powerful hero, that guy will be leading. i've been playing it since beta, got myself trapped in it and couldn't leave it for another game bcuz i've learned each mechanic to play it, so i've seen enough in this game to tell you right now that this is an abandoned piece of trash, noone in Blizzard cares about it's own child and i'm pretty sure this won't change anytime soon. I finally deleted it Expand
