HEXEN II, based on the QUAKE 2 engine, takes what defined HEXEN: BEYOND HERETIC and improves it. It adds a leveling system like WITCHAVEN,HEXEN II, based on the QUAKE 2 engine, takes what defined HEXEN: BEYOND HERETIC and improves it. It adds a leveling system like WITCHAVEN, there are 4 classes now (plus 1 with the Mission Pack), the Hub System is emphasized even more and the puzzles are harder and more numerous and no longer are simple switch puzzles. If you hated HEXEN: BEYOND HERETIC for this, you will hate HEXEN II even more. The difficulty was ramped up even more, enemies now are devastatingly tough for the most part and secret areas are not optional for the most part. Be prepared to destroy the environment, as mandatory hidden passages and items are often hidden within. This is also my major gripe here, progression is even slower than in HEXEN 1, often coming to a complete stop, backtracking and searching every inch of the now empty levels and destroying whatever you can in the process. It also doensn't help that there is no map function, just as in the QUAKE games.
Level design and graphics is where HEXEN II shines the brightest, it's not only the best looking game made with the QUAKE II engine, it also has by far the best level design of them all! Each act has it's own theme, ranging from medieval European style, meso-American style, ancient Egyptian style and Roman style, each looking vastly different from one another. Each act features a boss enemy, which were inspired by the biblical Horsemen of the Apocalypse. The change of scenery and enemies adds a lot to staying motivated through the slowly progressing levels.
Overall, I prefer HEXEN: BEYOND HERETIC over HEXEN II for its art style and simplicity, but objectively HEXEN II is the superior game considering the technical and gameplay elements. It however is NOT a shooter! It should be considered a 3D adventures game with combat and RPG elements, where combat becomes almost secondary at times, yielding to puzzles and exploration while searching for hidden objects. Anyone expecting QUAKE but with magical weapons might be somewhat disappointed.

It totally revolutionizes HeXen! Bringing advanced puzzles and new enemies, as well as a whole new plot, but can still be called a sequel! It totally revolutionizes HeXen!
