The jump scares are a bit overdone, same as the original Layers of Fear, and there’s an abysmal chase sequence in the second act that could’ve been cut completely. Still, Bloober Team’s rapidly proved itself as a master of psychological horror, using symbolism in ways most games don’t even attempt, let alone achieve. So what if it’s not very scary? There’s more important work to be done. Great work.

Layers of Fear 2 is a fascinating horror game that centers on exploring a mysterious ship and its ever-changing layout. It isn't the scariest game, but the unsettling nature of everything you encounter more than makes up for it. The constant environmental changes designed to mess with you are amazing and one of the best aspects.

Though LoF2's message may be cryptic at first, with every layer that is pulled back, more insight is revealed. If life is a stage, and all the men and women are merely players... where does that put you? What does it mean to be the captain of your own destiny? Will you let your past define you, or your future? The player is confronted with each question with the brute force of a formless ghost. The horror is real, but you may not be.

Layers of Fear 2 is better than its predecessor and mostly succeeds at its attempts to induce psychological horror. It is only marred by a few sections that, despite the fact that you’re running, tend to bring the pace to a halt, hindering the entire experience.

The winning formula does not change: this is what the boys of Blooper must have thought that, after the excellent commercial success of the first Layers of Fear, they have slavishly replicated the structure with some more interactivity.

Layers of Fear 2 is striking in its unsettling places, but is a looser experience than its predecessor, losing the player with busywork puzzles and winding corridors.

Similarly to its predecessor, a striking presentation is not enough for Layers of Fear 2 to overcome a jumbled menagerie of cliches, jump scares, and overwrought writing.

Layers of Fear is a very personal experience, so the best advice I can give is that you don't take in account the opinion of others. It is a game that you need to experience for yourself.

Also, this is not a game for everyone. To fully enjoy you need to have in mind that this is a game very different than any other game out there.
To enjoy it you need to have patience, to pay attention to every detail, to take your time, and to play it more than once.

Just as the name says, the experience is made by more than one layer, and the more times you play it more you discover and it makes more sense.

The first time I finished this game I felt a bit disappointed. That's because this time Bloober was more ambitious and experimented a major variety of ambiences and a even more abstract aproach to the storytelling. But then I just took some time to think about the game and writed down some ideas about what I saw in it. I created some theories. And this was the part when the fun began.

I felt like the game was finally taking form in my mind.
Then I started to play a second time and every detail was making way more sense this time. That was the point when I felt that this really was something that came out from Bloober Team's minds.

Now I am loving the game just as I loved the first one.

I already started my 3rd playthrough as I said before, and I am really enjoying the game a lot more than when I played it for the first time.

    So my advice is:

    - This is not a game for everyone.
    - This is not totally equal to the first one, so take your time to put the pieces of the story together and play more than once.
    - Don't be so hard on trying to figure out everything on the story. There's no right or wrong version. That's the beauty of it. The truth is what you believe it is and what makes more sense to YOU.

    Thank you for reading.

Much unlike LoF 1 it appears rather obviously like a walking simulator without many choices, but atmosphere is great, plot is great, you could just object the many anachronisms and steampunk-failing details. It's cool, it's great, it's fun, and it's horror. Only a very small piece to perfection is missing. Expand

I was kind of let down by this game, doubly so coming fresh off the heels of the original. Its atmosphere, while having the potential to be compelling, has much to be desired. Any unnerving energy present in the first has been traded in for instakill chase scenes, which matters even less considering the abundance of checkpoints. Its jumpscares fall flat as there's less buildup than was present in the original, and it comes off feeling forced and cheaper as a result. There were so many moments where I felt "I could be experiencing the original again", which is an underwhelming sentiment for a sequel to provide.
Its clearer path towards endings makes sense considering the narrative, and it has moments of intrigue, but these islands are few and far between in an ocean of clunky gameplay and an underwhelming atmosphere. Overall, this felt much more misguided than the original, which is heartbreaking.

The plot are just so confusing to me at first; And the video game is a 4-5 hour walking simulator with "scary" moments that aren't even that scary. There are also no consequences from dying and thinking this as a "horror" game is just a bit of stretch. Although I did enjoy the aesthetics and some of the paintings, so bravo. There are also other creepy moments that I liked a lot but that just can't justify of my experience. It's mostly a boring game. Expand

This game is nothing like the first one. The chase scenes and strobe lights are miserable.
