  • Summary: Legend of Grimrock 2 is a dungeon crawling RPG with a modern execution but an old-school heart. A gaggle of 4 prisoners have shipwrecked on the secluded Isle of Nex. The island is chock full of ancient crumbled ruins, mysterious shrines and a vast underground network of dungeons.

No compromise, no looking back. If you enjoyed the original you could possibly die of happiness. The only excuse not to play this gem could be your aversion to the dynamic duels concept. [Issue#247]

Legend of Grimrock II is better than the original in every regard: more freedom, better character progression, better enemies, better puzzles and better environmental variety. Those who liked the first one will definitely love the sequel!

Legend of Grimrock II is another glorious glimpse of the past, a window to a genre dead and buried and brought back to life with care and respect, and I urge you to peek through it.

The first Legend of Grimrock managed to pay homage to the forefathers of its genre, while being free of the shortcomings that often plague retro productions. Its successor, following the same footsteps has managed to expand this successful core towards new directions. It is bigger, technically superior and it offers deeper gameplay. Nevertheless, if you aren't familiar with grid based gameplay, try it out yourselves prior to purchasing it.

A sublime blend of fighting, puzzling and exploration, but the unforgiving difficulty may be too much for some.

A traditional, well-designed dungeon crawler that requires both quick fingers and a sharp mind. [01/2015, p.72]

If Almost Human had made a strict dungeon crawler like the first Legend of Grimrock, but with a properly fleshed-out world, better UI, redesigned combat and role-playing systems, I would have recommended such a sequel in an instant. Alas.

If you love Action RPGs, dungeon crawlers, or RPGs with puzzle elements, you'll love this game. If I had paid 60$ for it, I would feel like I got my money's worth... but it's 22$. It's very polished. The opening CGI looks like it's from a triple-A title. The graphics arn't next-gen, but they're still very good. Many 60$ AAA titles don't have graphics of this caliber (dishonored lol).

It is a bit challenging. On normal I've died quite a few times, and I'm a pretty hardcore gamer (dark souls & dark souls 2 vet). It's never cheesy though. Most traps won't kill you outright, but some put you into very bad situations. However, traps are easily visible if you're cautious. Personally, I enjoy the level of difficulty... dying to something makes me want to beat it more. I didn't customize my party (I completely missed that option, I thought the game was a roguelike) at the start, so if you min/max it might be a bit easier. If you enjoyed Dark souls, you'll probably love this game. It doesn't hold your hand.

There's tons of collectables and optional loot, which is fantastic. I was the guy in Diablo 2 that had to destroy everything in case something good dropped. There's a shovel, and you can dig EVERYTHING.

My only complaint would be that some of the puzzles are a bit unclear, particularly ones that involve signs. It will tell you an adjective, and you'll get 3/4 of them, but the last one just doesn't make sense (happened to me in 4 plagues, thought "cold" should be some type of elemental item). Most of them are fun and understandable, though, so I can forgive that quirk.

The grid movement will probably annoy some people, and it can be a little frustrating at times. However, once you get used to it you won't even notice it anymore. It's well done, and feels natural in most of the game.

Overall I would give the game a 9.0/10 if this were sold for 50-60$, but selling the game THIS low should be a crime.

The game oozes with style, and the environments are awesome in their square-paper format. Combat is hard but manageable with patience -- movement is essential in its (nearly) turn-based battles. Character progression is slow but perceptible, especially when you have the opportunity to fight again some opponents from the beginning of the game, and there is very little filler -- you are always fighting some monsters, trying to figure out the puzzles, or hunting for better equipment. There is tons of backtracking, but the game presents many shortcuts to accelerate your trips around the island.

Exploration is nice, but the puzzles and riddles are the stars of the game. All of them are logic, though you might want to explore the world to find hints, and often a hint is quite far from the puzzle itself. I actually found myself stuck very often, but coming back to a puzzle on another day gave me new ideas; there was only one "main" puzzle that was too obscure for me (the combination to the cemetery door -- I found its hints and nearly solved it, but I would never guess the one extra bit at the end of the sequence). Moreover, you can actually finish the game skipping one (maybe two?) of the big areas; you would miss on a lot of content, but this means you do not have to solve everything, unless you want to get to the "true ending". There are also many optional riddles and secrets which just provide you with extra equipment and are entirely skippable, some of them very clever -- there were quite a few "a-ha!" moments for me.

Now, do not expect too much story or lore -- though there are a few bits here and there, they are just an excuse for all the dungeon (and exterior) crawling. Score: 87/100.

It definitely is directed to old style RPGers, but it has given tons of fresh air on the genre. It surpasses its predecessor in all aspects bringing a challenging experience and a wide world to explore. Balance is great and the game gives a lot of chances of exploration to those willing to find all of its secrets. Be aware that the challenges sometime are very tough and that the game gives little orientation on next steps. It's all up to you and your perseverance to unfold everything it has to offer. If you liked classics like Eye of Beholder & Dungeon Master, you cannot miss this game!! Expand
