I was flabbergasted by what two largely unknown studios managed to achieve. Lords of the Fallen is not just a creative take on the formula introduced by From Software, but also a game that can rival the greatest recent RPGs and looks like Monica Bellucci and Sophie Marceau from their best years. Straightforward copycat of "Souls" games achieved a success because it can reach players the Japanese series could not because it was too difficult. The game is still challenging but you won't be desperate from playing it. [Issue#247]

Lords of the Fallen is a small miracle when you consider the size of the studios that have worked on the project and the quality of the art direction and combat system, but unfortunately it does not completely shine.

Lords of the Fallen, a shameless and sloppy copy of Dark Souls, shouldn't be as enjoyable as it is. Somehow, through all its imbalance and oddity, it remains a surprising amount of fun, even if its propensity to make the player laugh is a sheer accident.

Tough, unforgiving but lacking a certain something. [Dec 2014, p.56]

Lords of the Fallen serves as a solid entry point to those toeing the waters of the Souls franchise, but simplified systems, a shallow story and forgettable bosses keep this game from dethroning the greats.

If you have a capable rig—and don’t experience the crashes I did—I think it’s a worthwhile experience. Still, it’s less interesting than Dark Souls in terms of plot and setting, and full of wandering and grinding that first tested my patience, and finally made me as powerful as some of the bosses. If I could take its combat system, weapons, and enemies and put it in another more interesting game, I would.

I haven't played any FromSoftware so I cannot relate on the NPC difficulty.

Lords of Fallen seems to have a decent (but generic) story line where the main character seems to be the key to save the world. You also have some sidestory quests from the few hours I gave it. And playing with a controller is a must (even on PC). The port was rather well done, with few graphic options and rebindable keys (even on your controller).

Combat wise, you always have to lock the target you want to attack otherwise blocking or doing combo is almost impossible. However, locking on the said target is a pain while fighting multiple mobs. If you're fan of difficult game, it's a decent one to add to your library.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

Controls are **** Harkyn refuses to move faster every time when he finished a simple move. Swinging a sword is like swinging a hammer, so IControls are **** Harkyn refuses to move faster every time when he finished a simple move. Swinging a sword is like swinging a hammer, so I have to use light weapon to finish the game because swinging a heavy/medium weapon takes way too long to finish the animation, so I will always get hit and still can’t hit the enemy. Rolling is useless, because you still get hit even you timed it right. Blocking with a shield is useless too. Even if I have half of my energy left, I still get stunned when an enemy attacks me twice in a roll, so I have to use shield charge every time whenever I encounter a fast enemy.

Bosses are easier than the regular enemy. If I run in the wrong way in a corridor and there are two or more enemies, I will get stuck and die. Any regular enemy can stun and kick me to the sky. However, bosses attacks are slower than the regular enemies, their attacks won’t hit me twice most of the time so I have time to heal when I get hit but regular enemy can’t because they will stun lock me to death. Also, why is the game limited to new game++?
