Oxenfree is well written, immaculately acted, and superbly paced. And the most important thing is a conversation system that brings to life lived-in characters actually talking to each other instead of struggling to emerge from a turn-based dialogue game. Oxenfree is the Robert Altman of videogames.

Oxenfree is a fantastic horror game, and Night School Studio has definitely pulled out all the stops to bring this story to life. Its classic Telltale meets the horror movies of the 1980s, and they’ve hit all the right notes. The branching storylines, likeable characters, and underlying dread and mystery really help this game to accomplish everything it could. Oxenfree is sure to keep you guessing until you reach the final ending screen. At which point I can’t promise you won’t just start over, ready to explore the ghostly realm ocne again.

Night School’s creepy teen horror more than succeeds at being a chilling supernatural tale, but its real strength lies in its rough, earnest, truthful account of five teen lives and the ways that they grow and fracture under the worst, most unearthly kind of pressure.

Oxenfree is a story about human interaction and how we choose to treat each other, all set against a backdrop of supernatural horror. It just feels really human in spite of all the weird stuff.

Oxenfree is a wonderful narrative and explorative experience that succeeds in innovating the way in which dialogues are incorporated in videogames. It’s a big feat, that together with the interesting story and the stellar audio production values is well worth the price.

In the end, Oxenfree is absolutely a game about teenage bullshit (forgive me for being a little disingenuous earlier). But it manages to revitalize that narrative by focusing on feeling more than substance; it glances at each character’s inner struggle rather than serving it up for a full meal.

Pacing is a problem, but the experience can be a memorable one if you buy into Night School Studio’s concept.

Yes, it's short, but it has a really great story, great dialogue, the characters are great and the soundtrack is amazing. I even love the painterly background.

If you get to play this game, don't play it once and then stop. Play it again right away. The supernatural stuff you saw during your first playthrough "bleed through" to your second "timeline" and the story goes deeper still. Not to mention that you can get multiple endings based on your play style. ;) Those hidden trophies are there for a reason.

I just love this game so much despite the massive bugs I got, but I'm a full time video game tester, and I attribute most of these bugs to my mac just being too slow. I don't generally game on my mac so it's forgiven. Give this game a try, it's a diamond in the rough.

The characters are a chore though.. they are a bunch of dumb teenagers.. just wanted to slap all of them most times. Maybe just cuz I'm not 16 anymore, but I would have liked something a bit more mature.
    Worth playing

It's not the worst offender in the genre but at times I did get a little bored.

I liked the visuals, especially the world which was very detailed and almost lifelike, which made the character models look out of place as a result, though. The audio was OK as a package, I liked the voice acting but I really disliked the music and it never looped well, you could always hear where it was stopping and starting again, there was no flow to it. Gameplay wise it's as basic as it gets, directional movement, use, radio, map, that's it.

The story is always the most important part and it was good and more importantly your choices matter! And it's not just the last few choices ala Telltale games, all your choices matter and will shape your ending of which there are many which gives this game good replay value. Overall a charming little game that got a little slow and boring at times but ultimately was enjoyable enough to recommend to fans of the genre.

I initially took it for a walking simulator, but later on, thankfully, it gets quite interesting. The dialogue and conversation system shines really well and the voice acting is impressive. The story is there, and some parts are quite creepy. That said, the walking and moving around the small island did feel monotonous and boring quite quickly. Alex moves slowly and you do a lot of backtracking. The ghosts in the game also feel quite harmless, so a key improvement to this game would be to have more negative and horrible consequences for your actions. The conversations DO matter so pay attention to what you say as it affects the endgame. If you like good stories, you'll feel at home in this game, but the walking can be quite exhausting at times. For the price, it's worth the risk and you probably will enjoy it. Expand

Seriously, when is this barrage of amateur games that are often not even games going to stop? Are we going backwards now?

You have to use w,a,s,d keys to move around in this walking tour. You can't even use the mouse accept to click on the endless conversation bubbles. Hey, here's a cool idea, let's go back to an MS-DOS interface, wouldn't that be trendy and cool?

Everything about this game makes it clear that the developer's entire focus was on how they could make a "game" with as little effort as possible, and as quickly as possible. The game is very short and yet still spends a lot of time dragging things out to try and convince you that it really is a game, and not a comic strip. It seems like one person could have made this game in a short period of time. If this trend keeps up no one is going to want to make real games anymore. Why bother when you can quickly crank out amateur garbage by the truckload and make just as much money by releasing "indie" games in much bigger quantities.

If you like this game, check out Zork. It's just walking around and text, similar to this this game without the childish graphics, but definitely better entertainment with better writing.
