Overall, Plebby Quest: The Crusades is a deep strategy game with a humorous wrapper to move it along. It was built to seem familiar, sporting a Risk undertone prevalent throughout, but it’s much more than just a simple strategy board game. Much, much more.

PiedPipers Team’s Plebby Quest: The Crusades is a fresh take on the historical strategy sim. It’s fun to conquer land, manipulate relationships, and wage war all in the name of building an empire. The use of humor helps to put a new spin on a formula much in need of some variety. Veterans of the genre may not be as impressed by the offerings in Plebby Quest, but there’s still something for everybody.

It’s basically a historical strategy game, but the nuances and individual sequences within it allow it to ascend beyond that into one of the most entertaining takes on the strategy genre I’ve played in a long time. It’s both very fun to play and very funny, and that’s not an easy thing to manage.

A much more interesting than it seems, while still approachable and cheerful. Plebby Quest is a historical strategy game that doesn´t take itself very seriously, but is worth a crusade. [Issue#303]

Despite how the game falters with humor throughout the scenario mode, there are a lot of fun gameplay mechanics here. The simplified strategy mechanics make for fast paced and exciting rounds, and interacting with different nations and religions makes for some great situations whether players are starting wars or making alliances. If players can look past its faults, they will find that Plebby Quest is a very solid strategy title.

  1. In spite of these issues, Plebby Quest just about succeeds in what it sets out to do. If you’ve always fancied painting a big map in the colour of WAR, but get intimidated by complex UIs, there are certainly worse places to start. That said, I’d be more inclined to recommend something like the aforementioned Unity Of Command, which cuts right to the heart of large-scale strategy without a single mini-game in sight.

The game itself is filled with cutesy art, comedic cut scenes/interactions, and the game play is complex enough to satiate any strategy gamer!

What sets it apart from other games that are similar such as the Civilization series, is that Plebby Quest focuses MUCH more on the aspect of religion and its intricacies, which most games don't care or want to delve into. Not only that, there's a quirky take on how to deal with some actions, as a lot of the game is determined by mini games, such as coin flipping, card matching, and book stacking. This takes a more interactive approach towards your actions, rather than just point click and achieve.

Out of the 30 hours I put into Plebby Quest : The Crusades, almost all of it was put into playing the scenarios 1-3 ( at the time ), so I don't have much to say about the free play mode, but if you enjoy a good story, some funny moments, and a feel-good domination game, then this game will probably be good for you.

My only qualm about this game would be that at the time of the review, the mini games although fun, are extremely repetitive once you get to the third scenario as by that time i've probably flipped 1000 coins and stacked thousands upon thousands of books. I'm hoping that the mini games will either expand in the future or become less repetitive.

Overall, a great game, the company worked hard on it and it truly shows. Personally I wouldn't get it for the base price on Steam, but if it ever goes 20-50% off i would recommend to pick it up in a heart beat.

Plebby Quest appears simple and silly but is surprisingly deep strategy wise. It is a different approach to grand strategy and it works. The characters provide a lot of personality and story to each scenario. I had problems with crashing the first day but it was fixed by the development team the next day. Can't wait for more updates! This game is one of the buggiest games I have played so far. I had to reinstall the game twice and restart PC a couple of times to get it running up to this point. Also the game crashes all the time! Not impressed. I would wait for it to mature and more bugs are fixed before I would recommend anyone pay for this game and even then get it on extreme sale price. Expand
