It’s a tough call as to whether to recommend the game or not. I think what it boils down to is, did you like the original game but have trouble getting it to play now, if so then certainly this is a great purchase for you. Do you like the older style RTS games with less minute detail to focus on and a stripped back easier mechanic, then this might tickle your fancy. But if you need absolutely all the bells and whistles, to have complete control over everything and the most up to date state of the art… then perhaps give it a miss.
Praetorians was a great RTS made by the creators of the Commandos series. Its remaster is a good opportunity to rediscover this classic, but feels rushed. It would have been great to add more options and new content.
You feel like a babysitter for an undisciplined Roman legion that got lost in antique texture forests. Between micromanagement and visual boredom the fun is lost too quickly.
This remaster simply increased resolution and added minor cosmetic improvements, but at its core, this is a very old strategy game which will frustrate most modern players.
The campaigns provide plenty of content, but repetition and micromanagement hinder the fun by making you feel like you’re fighting the same strategies every battle.
Praetorians HD Remaster brings the game into the 2020s; but is ill-equipped to compete with the almost two decades of progress since.
Praetorians HD Remaster looks better than its predecessor, but honestly, still looks like a mobile game I’d find in a promoted tweet, alongside a vague imperative like “defend your empire!”.
