  • Summary: Rain of Reflections is an atmospheric, dystopian adventure game with exploration and deep character interactions. Its turn-based strategic confrontations are uniquely centered around a motivation mechanic.

Rain of Reflection: Chapter 1 has a winning formula of narrative and gameplay that, despite not being a traditional pairing, form an excellent symbiosis. The systems will all be familiar to fans of interactive storytelling games and XCOM-likes, but they’ve all been implemented so cleanly that they feel fresh. The only real negative is its short runtime, which leaves you wishing the developers had waited to release the entire game at once.

As it stands, the first chapter of Rain of Reflections is still a strong one. It has its clunky moments, and probably needs more by way of story craft as the chapters unfold, but nonetheless there’s a hook here that players may enjoy. With more of the world to see and do, ideally the next chapter will pack an even bigger wallop.

If you’re itching for a character-focused story set against the grime and rot of cyberpunk dystopia, Rain of Reflections checks all the boxes. It’s a bit of a rough introduction, but I’m hopeful Lionbite can sand down the edges for Chapter 2.

Intriguing and original in its approach.

Rain of Reflections: Chapter 1 proves to be a mixed bag. It’s clear that Lionbite have put a lot of time into the story that holds your interest but this is broken up by dull, immersion-breaking gameplay. With Chapters 2 and 3 still to come, we hope that Lionbite Games will take these points into consideration. As the game stands, however, it’s hard to recommend it above the competition.

Rain of Reflections: Episode 1 isn’t perfect, but kicks off what seems like a strong story, offering a tantalising taste of things to come with a mood-setting soundtrack that I’d happily listen to on its own. Even though subsequent chapters promise new characters, I want to see how Wilona’s story ends. But episodes 2 and 3 need to boot the hacking mini-games off a high skyscraper if they want to be worth experiencing.

Lionbite Games would have done well considering they are a bit small for such an ambitious project. However, there are disappointments in every part of the game: story, text, voice-overs, animations, puzzles.

The cyberpunk theme leaves you interested in not just finishing the game quickly, but rather taking the sweet time and enjoying the game. I often find myself exploring things along the way, learning more and more about the mysterious world of Rain of reflection. Expand

They'd show him how to make a narrative adventure game that can offer a cinematic experience AND some proper gameplay mechanics at the same time, instead of filling interactive sequences with rubbish QTE.

I don't think I've ever seen an indie game with AAA vibe as strong as in Rain of Reflections. It looks amazing on screens and even *better* in action... for a 3D game developed by an indie studio that can't afford performance capture, that is. Of course, it's not only about graphics or atmosphere. Story and gameplay (with clever hacking puzzles and well designed tactical encounters) are captivating as well.

But enough of it, just buy the game already. Truth be told, we all need you to do it so that we can get Chapters 2 and 3 in the best shape possible... Seriously, it's just 9,99$ (or even less on sale), so stop overthinking it ;-)
