Re-Legion is based on some interesting ideas and has a nice cyberpunk setting. Sadly there’s only one game mode (the single player campaign), and overall the game feels very easy due to a lackluster AI.
This cyberpunk RTS may be fresh and unconventional in terms of setting, but there are too many gameplay and technical flaws. It’s pretty to look at and listen to, but that doesn’t compensate for poor story and weak AI.
For me it's 7/10, but I gave 8/10 for one reason... Developers are still working on it, fixing bugs and adding new features. I hope they won't leave Re-Legion and let the game die, because it has a great potential.
So, like you may figure it out Re-Legion has many bugs and glitches, but I like the game as a whole. Good story, interest mechanic where you not recruiting troops, but converting people to fight for you in your cult, cool graphic and one of the best sci-fi soundtrack I ever heard. Bugs don't bother me and I enjoyed playing it (especially because I was curious how the plot will develop). Fine RTS, that will be great if devs will fix some issues.
Just please add Skirmish mode or Multiplayer, because only Campaign (no matter how good) isn't enough for the most of players for that price.
Re-Legion is a great example of a good idea that is failed by the sum of its parts. It's not a bad game by a long shot, but it's also not what I would call great or even good. It's serviceable, it works (other than two frustrating crashes), it has a beautiful visual aesthetic and a great lead voice actor. But when you make a game centered around building a cult, when you set out with the intent of making player choice matter so that you have a real option of peace or chaos, you have to make it so.
With good reason, Re-Legion is getting missed reviews in the Steam Marketplace. RTS fans are disappointed because the concept seemed so new! An RTS that focuses on conversion rather than building factories or buildings to convert armies. It’s a really cool idea, but the implementation was not there. It’s upsetting, really. Everyone who picks it up really wants to like it because the vision of the developers is very clear. They clearly have a love and understanding of what they are going for, but they may not have had the right team in place to make it happen for them.
It’s clear that Re-Legion arrived to Steam with an early-access standard present. The sound effects, voice acting, visual quality, common bugs, and even menu design all seem unprepared and shabby. Saving the game in a given level takes 30 seconds or more, and there remains eight to ten hours of content prior to completion, lacking even a range of difficulty levels for another go-round.
If you miss games like Syndicate Wars (just like me), than there's hope for you. Re-Legion is cyberpunk RTS game about cults in the dark future. Sounds familiar?
Game is strongly inspired by mentioned classic. Both in gameplay and setting. Graphic and story are the best parts of Re-Legion, if you like sci-fi than you need to play it. But gameplay... isn't that well. Game has still some problems with pathfinding, but lots of bugs has been fixed since release.
Original mechanic of converting citizens to your cult is something fresh in RTS genre. Unfortunately there's no skirmish or multiplayer, but If campaign with it's outstanding visuals and soundtrack is enough for you than Re-Legion is something just for you (but supposedly developers are working on it). If not than it's 6/10, but for me, today, it's 7/10.
I'm not a big fan of RTS games, but I really like cyberpunk/sci-fi settings so I had to try Re-Legion. Game isn't that bad like I read in reviews. Yes, it has some issues (bugs, stupid AI, etc.), but it also has a great graphic. Atmosphere of this cyberpunk city is superb. Gameplay is okay and story is fine. Also they had a cool idea with merging cyberpunk with religious cults. Worth a try.
Short reviews!
The good:
- soundtrack
- setting
- original mechanic (converting citizens)
- story (kinda)
The bad:
- voice acting
- AI
- bugs
- optimization
- no skirmish/no multiplayer (yet)
Summary: Once again mediocre game from 1C, but still not very bad and good enough to try it.
A bare minimum attempt at an RTS game. The premise is very promising, and some of the ideas are very interesting. That being said, this is nothing but a bloated proof of concept. This game only contains 9 story missions, including the tutorial mission and early missions introducing the 3 mechanics in the game.
The game promises three different cult styles, or factions, but they are essentially all the same. The only difference is each gets their own tech tree to unlock uninteresting passives, or dogmas( like a very slight increase to pop limit), many of which are shared with other factions. The unit mechanics are also lack luster, such as no formations, no controlled movement speed, and extremely shoddy pathing.
This game is intriguing, and another interesting RTS is always worth getting excited for, but no Skirmish, no Multiplayer, and a lack luster campaign that doesn't even feature a functioning AI opponent means this is a must pass until it is fixed. This entire game could be recreated more effectively on Age of Empires 2 map editor, except for the art.
SummaryBecome a prophet in a futuristic technocratic society in this cyberpunk RTS. Set the code of your belief, convert citizens to cult members, upgrade them to fighting units and rid the city of non-believers. Turn your ideals into the most powerful religion.
