Aug 12, 2014Piranha Bytes is going back to its roots – including new cool factions like the Demonhunters and Guardians, both using powerful fantasy-spells. The game also offers a rich and detailed open world, mixing pirate- with medieval-setting where you can explore tons of rpg-content. Unfortunately the cinematic and technical presentation isn’t state of the art, including camera- and clipping-problems. Though the combat-system has improved since Risen 2, it still isn’t well balanced and polished.
Oct 22, 2014The Germans took a step back and reintroduced more of the distinctive atmosphere of the Gothic series and the first Risen, which is a huge advantage for me. The world is so vivid and lively that it really makes you want to be there and see as much of the vast content as possible. It’s a shame that the game’s engine is visibly aging and the story lacks the punch. [10/2014, p.48]
Aug 20, 2014The main strength of Risen 3: Titan Lords is the big amount of things to do. Missions of any kind, treasure maps, crafting, factions, exploration of the islands, some naval engagement and more. But for those who have already played Risen 2: Dark Waters the impression of "copy-paste" is really strong and unfortunately its main flaws are still here.
Aug 21, 2014It’s almost a good game. For some of you that will be enough. It’s a neat little diversion and it’s fun in spurts, and maybe that’s all you are looking for. However, there are many other better RPGs to play out there with better stories, and better systems.
Aug 24, 2014Forget Risen 2. Let it not bias you. Risen 3 is all you'd want from the Risens and the Gothics, too.
Graphics The game is gorgeous.Forget Risen 2. Let it not bias you. Risen 3 is all you'd want from the Risens and the Gothics, too.
The game is gorgeous. Sunlight/Godrays crash through the canopies of the trees; distant mountains cast their shadow on distant land realistically; fire never looked as good; water makes you want to jump right in; distant ruins beckon you to explore them; higher tier armour -- the cloth properly dancing as you move, the steel reflecting the light -- makes you drool as you stare at your hero. The physics engine is also fluid and realistic, enemies falling back after having received their killing blow will tumble over objects or droop down from them.
It's still what you expect from any Risen or Gothic game: The HUD is simple, and that's perfectly fine. In fact, I wouldn't have it any other way. You can now also change into a parrot with scrolls that you'll find everywhere -- specifically in high places! -- the devs silently begging you to use them as turning into a parrot makes you glide however long you want. There's a little energybar nonetheless which will slowly empty whenever you want to fly upward. It's fun! And as for the combat...
It has improved SO MUCH! If you time your attacks properly, you can swing with heavy attacks almost as fast as you would with normal attacks. This needs some practise, but once you get a feel for it, it becomes easy. For some too easy, though many players still think combat is hard. As you gain enough experience (or Glory) you'll be able to gain the Riposte skill, which, if you time it right, your parry will execute a sweet animation of your hero evading a strike and counter-attacking with a strike of his own. You can also still dodge, which is an ability that can be exploited since there's no stamina bar. I say exploited, because during a dodge you're practically invincible. A fantastic addition to the combat is the finishing move on humanoids. When you kill the last enemy in an encounter, you watch your character execute him. There are multiple finishers. Your hero pushes an enemy against a wall, rams his weapon's hilt into the face multiple times before running him through; your hero turns the enemy around and slits his throat, etc. etc. etc. My most favorite finisher is where the enemy runs toward the hero and the hero steps aside at the last moment, leaving his weapon stretched horizontally in the enemy's path... the enemy runs into the blade, stumbles past the hero and eventually drops on the ground a few strides further, quite dead. Imagine stuff like this with a perfect physics engine. Yes, if there's a ledge a few strides behind your hero in said finisher, the enemy will stumble and drop down the edge instead. Deader than dead. So awesome.
There's so much to see and do and find in this game! Almost every NPC with a name (which is almost every NPC) has a quest or more quests. When you climb up a mountain and see these mysterious places in the far, far distance... well, that telltale feeling rushes through every RPG player -- the feeling that says: I NEED to go there and explore every nook and cranny! And I can guarantee: You WILL be rewarded for it.
I love this game. I am not kidding. It's the best thing in the gaming world that has happened to me in YEARS. And that's coming from a guy who fell in LOVE with Gothic 1 & 2, Risen 1 and very much disliked Risen 2. I catch myself playing this game with a content smile on my face. It's crazy. This game is phenomenal!… Expand

Combat tries to imitate the style of other rpgs but is unresponsive and feels choppy. The graphics are also very sloppy, and the voice acting and storyline is quite forgettable. Aug 15, 2014This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The pros are the spirit and mood. Caribbean islands are perfect, they hide so many secrets. The clothes customization is good. And thats all.
Contra: Fight system...I hate it. Very hard to hit the creaturesa and monsters, they attack to often. (2hits/sec). Thats why I cannot use the heavy hit with my sword. The monsters push me back when I load the powerred hit, and it zeroes when I fly back from the enemy hit. Enemies chase me always, almost impossible to escape. Too much enemies. When I try to escape from an unballanced fight, I meet at least 5 more enemies during running from my previous fight. At the end 5-7 enemies chase me and chase me and chase me until the infinity and beyond. This is the worst part of the game.
When I accidentally hit a friendly NPC during a fight, it gets angry and starts to attack me, and ...read above....cannot escape from it.
Toooooo much missions, When I talk to an npc, 99% that it will give me a total useless quest. Get lost bag, find plant, kill beast, .... (do not worth to complete, too much annoying fight to get a package/plant, and get too small reward. And I cannot cancell the quest, it just fills my logbook. makes harder to see it.
Less, but more interesting, more rewarding missions would be better.
Main mission: what is the main mission? Im totally lost. Get crew? Get ship? Get back soul? How? Where should I start? Is there a progress? Or all main missions just put together, and do it in the order you like it?
Conversation: very boring, robotic speech. the camera always jumps to one player to one npc. These camera jumpings are very exhausting to my eyes.
Bugs: Oh my sweet mama.....so much bug, Wow, so pesky, much glitches.
I had to start from the end of the crab coast, because the Booze mission got stuck. I should get eggs for Harry, but this speech option somehow disappeard, and nor Harry, nor Booze not communicate with me....I could not proceed foward with them. And I had not savegame before I met them first.
Camera: already mentioned the conversation jumps. But when I fall down, the camera stucks, and sets into an impossible angle.
All in all this game is very half-baked, and old. Built onto an old base of a buggy game. It is not good in 2014. They should have forget the elements of the first game TOTALLY. Mainly the fight system (read above). Among the others the physics are outdated, there are moveble wrecks, rocks, and bodies, but still not enogh today.
Fight, bugs, camera, physics are the most negative part of the game. Why did they used the old method? it was long tim wrong. It was annoying in the gothics, and in the older risens. (I could not finish the Risen 1, because these. I didnt want to get into the mental hospital.)
I had to cheat, Im not proud of it, but these points make the game unplayable. I had to counter-ballance them. Now I have 100 sword stat, and the most powerful sword in the second island (Kali, or what), and I bought every learnable stats from teachers. it makes the fight little bit easier, but the fast enemies make it bad.… Expand
