Ruiner is momentum. The art drives the story, the story drives the setting, the setting drives the music, and the music drives the combat. Which in and of itself, needs none of the above. There are other very cool elements to be found from the versatile progression system to the way in which the boss battles evolve and really put your skills to the sent. And there are stretches where the momentum lags and cues are repeated. But with the sound turned up, the lights drawn, and your eyes firmly watching each enemy movement and background detail come to life there’s nothing better. Ruiner gets it. And I love it.

Ruiner’s budget presentation does little to sully what is otherwise a challenging, addictive and sublime twin-stick shooter experience. Whether you’re head-hunting a particularly nasty criminal, taking on a group of cyborgs or arduously battling against a fearsome boss, Ruiner is action-packed, stylish as hell and fucking awesome. In fact, it just might be one of the most memorable experiences I’ve played this year. Just play it on PC if you can though, yeah?

A great action game, well balanced and with a unique personality. It's not very long, but we've enjoyed it, and we think any fan of this genre will too.

Ruiner is a fast isometric shooter. Frenetic. With a good handful of playable possibilities that offer variety in action, although it can sometimes be repetitive. Exploring its city Rengkok and its cyberpunk history of hackers and street gangs helps to bring a little more variety to the set.

Ruiner's cyberpunk carnage and soundtrack evoke Hotline Miami, even if the gameplay doesn't quite measure up. It's a spectacle, but it's over too soon.
  6. 50
RUINER ruins its own explosive presentation and promising combat with poorly thought-out difficulty and incomplete narrative and gameplay concepts.

I've seen people complain about the story but it isn't even half-bad. And while the story isn't anything to write home about, the world-building, setting and art-style 100% make up for it and create a universe that feels rich, deep and beautiful. This game's only flaw is that I desperately want more of it. 10/10, absolute masterpiece. Can't wait for more. Expand

I think the last top down shooter which I enjoyed as much was Dead Nation on PS3. This is not easy game to play and it will challenge you. You might have to try to kill the same boss over and over again, try different skills until you get it "right". The cyberpunk theme of this game resonates with me. The whole artistic aspect of this game is very well made with graphics and audio just fit beautifully together. I suggest to play this game with Xbox controller. Expand

    Pros:
-Very well balanced difficulty. Playing on hard will make you die from time to time until you get the right pattern without having any "wtf this is unfair" moments that so many badly balanced games create.
-Nervous gameplay : mobility over the tank and spank of some other popular hack&slash
    -Great Atmosphere and Ambiance
    -Mindless Fun
    -Very good music
-Optimized for speedrun if that's your thing

    Neutral :
Can't remap control, but if you are not impaired Keyboard+M works well enough

    Cons
-Not super clear on what hits you, and your hitbox is large.
-If you are not going multiple playtrough, the game is rather short. I finished the game in a bit over 4 hours. Due to the game low price, this is not that much of an issue though
    -Not fully voiced
-Some boss are easier than trash mobs waves. The final boss was too easy for my taste despite having an awesome artistic direction an number of things to care about on the screen.

Overall the gameplay itself is worth maybe a 6 (Cheap, Enjoyable but not memorable), but the artistic direction and soundrack are enough to earn one extra points each.

Least Favorite Thing: Cliffhanger is just another word for incomplete and an incomplete story is always a black mark for me. Games should be tagged as such!
