Overall there isn’t much more to say about Saints Row: The Third Remastered because, all in all, it’s the same game I loved back in 2011. Underneath a fairly fresh coat of paint is the same adrenaline pumping, juvenile story of a gang-turned-media-sensation trying to rebuild itself. In that regard, assessed purely in a vacuum, this game is a smash hit. In context, though, I can’t help but feel this release is a bit premature. With the original Saints Row: The Third still being recent enough that it looks alright and plays well, I can’t shake the feeling that letting it nap for another few years may have resulted in a more impressive remaster.

This Genki-sized update is more than just a polish job, it’s the whole enchilada. With visual upgrades and a dash of physics improvements, it’s sure to draw any Saints Row fan in all over again. Now we’ve just gotta get rid of the Genki-sized bugs.

There are remasters and then there are remasters. Some companies would have just taken Saints Row: The Third, tweaked the lighting a little, bundled it with all of its DLC and shoved it out on current-gen consoles with an improved resolution and called it a day. With Saints Row: The Third Remastered, however, Sperasoft and Volition have pretty much improved every single asset and implemented graphical features that make it stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the prettiest open world games available right now. This is still Saints Row: The Third – which is to say that it’s one of the most enjoyable open-world games ever made – only now it looks and plays better then ever.

I may have wanted more out of Saints Row: The Third Remastered, but it's still as much a blast to play today as it was in 2011, and now it's prettier to boot. Grumbles aside, what more could I ask for?

A solid remaster of a good game. The ridiculous but funny story and the huge content thanks to all the included DLCs are now shining in a much better graphic. However, the remaster did not wipe out the negative points. The missions are still repetitive, the AI is stupid as hell and the world feels a bit empty, if you leave the path of missions.

Flawed but fun, Saints Row: The Third Remastered brings back its ridiculously addictive formula to keep long-time fans and new players entertained for many hours. Sadly, it's a bit rough around the edges, and in no way comparable to a number of modern-day titles from the same genre.

Saints Row: The Third time travels to 2020 with a solid remaster. This is the same game you remember from 2011, with all of the DLC and content packs along for the ride. Developer Sperasoft has redone some of the models, especially with regards to the vehicles, and added an all-new, more realistic lighting engine. Unfortunately, it still doesn't quite measure up to the original PC release, and all the bugs of the original are still here. Still, Saints Row: The Third is a wonderful experience despite all its flaws, and that remains true of this remaster release.

Slightly better visuals perhaps but otherwise the same game....I couldn't have been more wrong, this game has been updated so well it's like I've never played it before, it is absolutely glorious to look at with updated visuals throughout the entire game, vehicles look better and feel smoother to drive, characters look like real people instead of animated goofballs (not that i minded this at all from the original) and I genuinely cant exaggerate just how nice it now looks, it must have taken some serious effort to make it look so polished and I can safely say that it was worth it, very well played, I can see myself playing through this just as many times as the original, would highly recommend. It really hit the spot, especially when it came to customization. But more than that Saints Row 3 knew what it wanted to be. It's like one of those dogs that wants to play with you no matter what. They'll bring you whatever they can get their paws on, they will run around you in circles and bark much too loud and if you don't pay attention you'll get slobbered and dirty, until they are just lying there, panting, grinning at you, daring you to go another round. GTA has devolved into a cat that is just smashing stuff and is spending most of the day licking itself.

Don't get me wrong, Saints Row 3 has comic relieve characters, needless, over-the-top violence and all the PG13-nudity you desire, just like GTA. It just didn't think it was special because of it. It didn't pretend that it was doing heavy social commentary and didn't bore me with relationship drama only to sacrifice the same NPCs two minutes later for the feelz. It was well aware that it's script wasn't Oscar-worthy, and I guess that's why the developers weren't tempted to bore me with overly long cutscenes full of tropes and edgy dialogue.

That's why I'm a little sad to report that, even if you loved SR3 back in the day, this will not impress you. As a matter of fact I think the remastered content often sticks out and causes inconsistencies, and therefore does more more damage than good. While SR3 was never a technical marvel, I really liked it's art style. And if I still needed proof that more polygons and higher resolutions are not the secret ingredient for better gaming, I could close my case now.

If you already own the original I can't really recommend this. But even if you haven't played SR3 I'd probably advise you to buy the old version. It aged pretty well, and I wasn't too euphoric with the performance of the remastered version on top of that. But it's still that dog I described, and the only reason why I had less fun was probably because I replayed the original way too often.

The only SR game I played. It was OK. I heard the second one is the best, maybe I give it a try at some point.

Extremely buggy and the original had a more consistent look. This remaster improves half the game and ruins the other half. Worse lookingExtremely buggy and the original had a more consistent look. This remaster improves half the game and ruins the other half. Worse looking textures, colors, and oh my god the bugs. No car sound, sirens not turning off, headlights not casting light in the dark, performance differences of 8000% between camera angles, it's crazy Expand
