Sea of Thieves has successfully redeemed its clumsy launch with Rare being a developer that fully commits to the title with monthly updates for more than two years. Now – it is a game brimming with content, adventure and gorgeous pirate atmosphere with arguably being the best pirate game available and a truly fun multiplayer experience.

It's not just the legend of my pirate, it's each and every player out there. Each with a different story, each with something that is so much more beyond the fetch-quest guilds. I'm hooked on this game already, and knowing Rare's passion for Sea of Thieves, I think we're in store for even more great things in the future. You need only answer the call of the sea; you are a pirate.

A year of updates has helped fill out its light content, but the real magic was there from the start. Rare’s take on cartoon piracy encourages you to behave as a cartoon pirate should: a little bloodthirsty, a little silly, and almost always drunk.

Sea of Thieves feels a little thin, but its unique foundation has captured our imagination.

Sea of Thieves' most compelling activity happens when player ships clash in PvP combat. However, PvE content is lackluster and easy forgettable, despite being set up in a beautiful world. This game has potential unlike any other and might be the game of we dreamed in two or three years.

Sea of Thieves provides all the necessary tools to the players willing to dive together in great naval adventures, full of smaller quests and epic sea battles.

An audiovisual masterpiece (that water!) which does a decent job at concealing its repetitiveness and shortage of content behind the joy of being a pirate. [05/2018, p.70]

Sea of Thieves is a continuous experiment, a strange role-playing game through which you must decide what kind of pirate you will be.

Today is hopefully just the start. Right now, Sea of Thieves might have the best-looking water in the world, some incredible charm, and excellent co-op, but it’s also astonishingly light on content.

Co-op buccaneers will have fun with Sea of Thieves, but without a character development and more variety regarding missions the hunt for treasures gets boring quickly.

A superb water park for four friends to splash around in, but progression is sluggish and there are too few surprises beneath the waves.

If the game is to flourish, Rare must develop the basic structures that compel modern players to return even on the days when nobody gets kidnapped by the Kraken. Sooner or later, we all have to grow up. [June 2018, p.108]

What’s here is an amazing foundation for a social experience that’s beautifully realized , and that makes it frustrating that its gameplay loop is so repetitive and its progression is so stagnant.

Sea of Thieves is a fascinating experience that is undermined by the lack of variety and player progression. A game that shines if played along with your buddies, but fails to engage the user if played without a group of friends.
  15. With its unique ocean graphics, Sea of Thieves invites players to hunt treasures and other pirates...But because the game cannot offer you much content, you have to write your own story.

Sea of Thieves has provided some of my favorite gaming moments this year, but the repetitive voyages and reliance on currently infrequent player encounters to keep things interesting mean the seas are a bit shallower than you might expect in a full-price game.

The graphics performance of Sea of Thieves is amazing, and indeed it's fun to sail with your friends. But dull combat and repeated missions ruin it.

Sea of Thieves is an ambitious game filled with some great ideas. Being able to explore the high seas with friends while collecting treasure, battling other pirates, and solving riddles is fun the first few times. However, after the short honeymoon phase is over, there’s not much left to keep your crew from abandoning ship.

Sea of Thieves has fresh and great ideas that work well. However, due to very repetitive missions, a lack of content and a poor end-game, this game turns into a tedious one after only a few hours.

While there is some fun to be had with Sea of Thieves, there isn't enough variation and basic content to maintain high quality gameplay. Apart from that, it feels like technical difficulties are sinking its release already.

The foundation is great. The fundamentals are there. It doesn't take much imagination to see how this game could blossom into something magnificent. But so long as it's missing long-term depth and incentives to stick around past the first few weeks, Sea of Thieves will feel like a missed opportunity.

I really want to love Sea of Thieves. The beautiful pirate world and the exciting sea battles you experience from time to time. But I can't do it. There isn't enough content and the lack of progression makes it an unsatisfying game.

Sea of Thieves runs great on PC, but the lack of HDR support is a shame for a game like this and there are only a few options to tweak the experience if you don't have a high end configuration.

Sea of Thieves has a solid foundation, but unfortunately there is no content and in a few of gameplay the feeling of being a pirate completely disappears. [Issue#285]

Sea of Thieves is a letdown. In its core it seems like a pleasant game for a few, or maybe a dozen hours that you can test for free by activating the Xbox Game Pass account. The cooperation in this game works really neat. But on the other hand, there are several problems like server issues and lack of content. Furthermore, the game is quite expensive.

Rare’s newest endeavor has laid the foundation for a great game, an experience like no other, but at the same time -and at in its current state- Sea of Thieves is barren, empty and with little to do after the first 4 to 5 hours of traveling through the seas.

Sea of Thieves is a daring attempt by Rare but also a lacking one on so many fronts. While the graphics are fantastic and the game has a unique charm, ultimately the world feels empty, devoid of content and features. Sailing with friends can be an exhilarating experience at first, but when there's not much to do the fun dies down pretty quickly.

The core gameplay loop is great, but it's too easy to plumb the shallow depths in a few hours. Sea of Thieves needs more meaningful content.

Sea of Thieves came with a big promise to give us hours of content and a fun open-world using a funny and non-serious environment. It succeeded in delivering the open world and funny feel but missed the content. Eventually, it depends on what happens next with future updates from Rare.

The foundation for a good game is there, but too much of the responsibility for the fun is pushed over to the player.

As it stands right now, Sea of Thieves is an empty playground of wasted potential that requires too much investment from the player with too little in return.

I've been walking around all week thinking about east and west and how to tell the difference between the two when I haven't got a compass to hand. I have been thinking about reckoning. This allows the game's fiction to create compelling moments - I have been genuinely lost in Sea of Thieves at times. But it also allows it to do what every game like this truly hopes to do - to cross over, to seep into your everyday life.

I hope Rare has a lot more to this game as I get further into it in terms of quests, but for now, I’m happy to let the visuals and social factor carry me like a wind across the sea.
  3. On the one hand, Sea of Thieves is a game so empty that recommending it feels like a dereliction of duty. On the other hand, I just chased down a man who killed me and threw a bucket of my own grog-induced vomit over him by way of revenge...It’s the small things like that that can make Sea of Thieves triumphant, which is just as well, seeing as there’s just an empty mass of very pretty water where the big things should be.

The Xbox version is lacking graphical settings compared to the PC version so the PC version is better in that category. Controls are able to be hot-keyed for keyboard but the game is designed to be played with a controller which you will learn fast.

Sea of Thieves is a great technical demo for a ship sailing game that could have been. It looks fantastic and the base model is good, but beyond that it falls very short. Essentially all the game has to offer will be done by about hour 5, 10 or so hours and you've experienced the nuts and bolts of the entire game.

To me it feels like a F2P or $20 game that was supposed to have content packs, quests, add-ons, story line unlocks, and other things you paid for over time. Instead they went with the full price route and it falls short in almost every aspect of actual gameplay. It looks good, the base of it is fun, but all the "story" and progress is just repetitive quests that are nearly identical with a few hard bosses (paired with boring combat) sprinkled in between.

In two years, this game might be fantastic. Its minimalist design and learn as you go sandbox feeling have a lot of potential. As of right now, you wake up in a bar with no tutorial and realize it's because if the game had one it would be more compelling than any story or faction it has to offer.

Stay away until next year and hope for the best.
