Had each character not felt so alike, and if the game’s combat system wasn’t quite so punishing on your thumb during extended bouts of play, Shing! could have been something quite special. As it is though, it’s still a good game, and one that fans of side-scrolling beat ’em ups should definitely check out. Its colourful visuals and challenging gameplay are an enjoyable combination, but one that’s best consumed in small amounts. Otherwise, your right thumb will never forgive you.

Shing! manages to take the beat'em-up genre, throw in some fantastic ideas, and squander it all on a twin-stick combat system that convolutes what would otherwise be a solid combo-mashing sidescroller. There is still a lot to like about this game, but unless you really dig analog stick combat, you may want to pass on this one.

Shing! misses the mark of great beat 'em up by a long shot; which could have been avoided with more attention to detail. If Mass Creation put in the effort, it could have been one of the best beat 'em ups this generation. But we’re stuck with something too dull to take a bigger slice of that audience.

Whether playing local with friends or solo, there's not much reason to pick up Shing! over any other beat 'em up out there. The art style is full of blocky 3D figures that are hard to look at after seeing the beautiful hand-animated opening. The characters and dialogue are ruined by adolescent pandering that feels decades out of date. The combat tries to reinvent the wheel by bringing back mechanics from Too Human and proving why they don't work all over again. The only positive is that the game is a quick run-through for the morbidly curious and exceptionally bored.

Yes - there are flaws, yes there are bugs. But I'm giving devs some credit.
