Players take control of a wide array of ship types, from massive cargo ships to speedboats, yachts, water taxis and even the mighty Titanic. The waters you sail are also as varied as the ships, from the biggest harbours in the world, such as Rotterdam and Hamburg, to the calm aqua marine waters of the Thai Phi Phi Islands. Gamers will experience how challenging it is to steer the Titanic through shallow water, or just how it feels to navigate a cargo tanker or tug boat - including how diverse the controls are. What might initially seem like a real prospective borefest actually turns into a kind of innocent, compelling and surprisingly gratifying experience.
  2. The graphics are visually pleasing, and the gameplay is varied enough to keep you coming back for more.

If you approach Ship Simulator as educational software(albeit flawed)rather than a game, then there's definite value on tap. Those too cool for school, however, will likely want to give it a wide berth. [Dec. 2006, p.128]
  4. You will find yourself getting bored with steering the ships around pretty soon as the mission objectives are not that fun. Also the controls are a bit quirky, I have a very hard time trying to use my mouse to use the throttles.

A proper ship simulator. And within that bracket, it faithfully reproduces long, combatless floating sessions. [Sept 2006, p.75]

Not quite as exciting as the title might suggest. [Sept 2006, p.103]
  7. The detail that has gone into the realism of the ships and locations is noticeable, but that doesn’t make up for the lack of any real interesting gameplay.

I agree with the professional reviewers. Looks are great, ship behaviour seems realistic, as far as my limited experience with the Titanic I agree with the professional reviewers. Looks are great, ship behaviour seems realistic, as far as my limited experience with the Titanic allows :-) Features are few and coarse, the 'virtual cockpit' I am used to in FS2004 is a joke in this game, it needs loads of work. Mooring is far too easy: anywhere within 100 meters of shore allows you to 'throw a rope', etc, etc. But altogether a promising start, I will surely check out the next release... Expand

This is a Considering the price of Ship Simulator 2006, this product was released when it should have been undergoing further development. This is a simulator in name only as a mysriad of elements necessary to qualify it as a ship sim were left to entice customers to purchase future versions. A major update is in order. While this product is a disappointing letdown for those anticipating an immersive and realistic ship simulator, the concept is worth pursuing further. Like the man in the ING commercial says ... I want to like Ship Sim but this install runs so poorly I can't get through a mission. My system is well above the minimum requirements I want to like Ship Sim but this install runs so poorly I can't get through a mission. My system is well above the minimum requirements yet the game engine repeatedly mis-renders the environment. I get ships without hulls, passengers standing on invisible docks, paved oceans, ect. This software should be a free beta test, NOT a $30 retail! Expand
