    This game is just fantastic.

As a fan of Survival Horror games, this one hits all the right spots, from the old school graphics to the gameplay, inventory management, and so on, but it also adds a fresh spin to things with the radio mechanic and obviously we know some people have discovered that they’re also using SSTV to hide images within certain radio frequencies in the game.

There’s certainly a lot of stuff hidden in those frequencies and that is very cool to learn about.

The story is told in such an interesting way that it’s not easy to describe without getting into spoiler territory, but it was highly pleased to see it all unfold.
The cutscenes are done in a very nice graphical style, pretty minimalistic but they convey their “message” fairly well, and the emotions to the player.

When it comes to gameplay and technical aspects, well this game does not require much power to run, no ultra fancy graphics settings or anything, and controls is probably the weakest part here, with no choice to remap Keybinds individually.
I played with my DualSense, and it felt fine, but I couldn’t really try Mouse and Keyboard because I’m left handed, so not being able to remap keys for me it just means I will have to use a gamepad.

Inventory space is a bit limited but it is nothing to worry about if you’re used to those old school survival horror games.

The game offers some old TV/CRT like filter but it looks a bit too blurry and I would’ve liked some extra tuning to that mode, even though I ended up using it for most of my play through, it fits the look of the game pretty well.

Sound design is pretty nice too in this game, apart from the previously mentioned usage of radio frequencies to solve puzzles and deal with other stuff in the game, sometimes, it makes certain scenes feel with just the perfect amount of unsettledness and mystery.

It is hard to write a review for Signalis and not mention any spoilers, but I can say it is a truly unique game and I hope this studio can keep making games that are this special, in the future.

Experiencing what this game has to offer for the very first time really felt like one of the best gaming moments for me in 2022.

People are going to be theorizing about the story for years to come, and I for one can't wait for it. I think that any fan of survival horror games, horror in general, or even just retro aesthetics should play this game. It is easily my 2022 game of the year. Expand

What an experience it was. Somber sci-fi anime aesthetic was slowly absorbing my mind to the point I couldn't stop thinking about it every day, even when I wasn't playing. And now, after finishing it, I'm just shattered into pieces. It's the first game in a very long time that I wish was longer.

TL;DR: A challenging, visually and narratively compelling Survival-Horror game and spiritual successor of the old day's "Resident Evil" type games. Get if you're into hard-ass and "weird" experiences, enjoy the glimpses into this strange universe with socialist-fascist undertones. Very worth it if you like a good challenge.

I played this on Xbox, to be totally clear, so I recommend using a controller if on PC. As Signalis is in Game Pass right at launch it was a good chance to pick up and get into - and it sure was a hell of a positive surprise! Signalis throws you right in your "Replika" body without any big fanfare. You don't know who you are - literally as the unit you are playing, and figuratively as the player - you just know you have to find your partner unit who misteriously vanished, leaving only a photograph as proof it ever existed.

And so you go down into a mysterious base, very much driven by a strange urge to find your partner - since you are a unit of exploration and support, as you find out by reading up on your tech specs - and discover a derelict base full of dead units walking, afflicted with a mysterious disease, or whatever you would call it on machine-human hybrids. The mystery gets deeper and deeper as you progress, at first slowly, then at an almost breakneck speed in the middle stages of the game, as puzzle after puzzle gets thrown at you.

Weapons are sparse, as is ammo - so you'll need to think before you shoot. Sometimes that is not at all possible and the game will set you up to fail. Saving is done in true Resident Evil style, at red glaring monitor stations - there is no auto save. So when you fail one hour after your last one, you will have the pleasure of re-doing everything.

    Strong points of the game:

Narrative - the weird, fascist-germano regime that seems to be controlling this part of space will probably make you shake all by yourself, reading the strange suppressive messages strewn all around the base as you discover more about yourself and the world.

Graphics - they are a weird, intentional pixelated mess, throwing you back to what gaming used to be ca 1995-2000 roughly. The game artfully masters to render into this 90s pixel filter.

Sound - it's dead quiet most of the time, but the game masters audio cues to clue you into "danger close" moments. The atmosphere is seriously dark.

    The bad:
Aiming mechanics are finnicky and hard to control - the auto aim does sometimes lock on to the wrong enemy without much control for the player.

Inventory - the game keeps the inventory to 6 items max at every point. There actually is a short narrative bit explaining it to the player, but that doesn't make it any better. The game would benefit from giving you means to expand your inventory. The back-and-forth tracking due to this at later game stages is very annoying.
Overall, super strong game with great narrative and a serious challenge. If you can work with the finnicky aim mechanics and the "no guide given" outside of the narrative - you'll have a blast.

The gameplay is reminiscent of classic Resident Evil and Silent Hill; some of the mechanics are a bit clunky, but not unexpected from a 2-person dev team, and the atmosphere and story more than make up for it.

The best horror game in a long time, maybe the best indie horror game ever, Signalis was truly a labour of love from the devs.

This is a game I would show someone of an older generation or to more cynical members of our own to show that yes, video games can be art. ill give it a 9 to pump the user score to 8 which i think it deserves. if there is a hint of begrudging then yes astute reader i have one major bone to pick. The environmental story-telling and world building are just incredible. the dark, cramped hallways spooky. and the lack of ammo/space is sweat-inducing. i definitely was nervous. but i wasnt really scared after the first 2 hours. and therin lies signalis' biggest flaw.

the world is filled with women! yes, im a misogynistic pig! but why? why is the world filled with only beautiful anime girls? and why is it a problem? "dommy mommy" was a highly liked comment i saw on a recent discussion surrounding the game and everything just kinda clicked for me. like resident evil village, this game's creators seemed unconfident in their own product or unable to stifle their puerile urge and made the game bait for rule 34ers. strong words, i know.

now this would be ok if there were some mature, in universe explanation for it. i was getting pretty annoyed, wanting to write my review halfway but waited to see if there would be any justification by the end. nope. Really devs? evil, dictator regime makes army of girl robots just because? no sinister explanation you could hint at AT ALL? oh and all the main human characters are girls too for no reason? (im serious, there are like 2 men total in this universe, its kind of hilarious) oh and the story fetaures a lesbian relationship that definitely pushes forward the lgbt community and isnt just fetish bait, right? *eye roll* but with mentions of female robots needing baths and "fetish objects" what else did i expect. this game has an M for mature on it but you could feel the teenage boy hormones oozing from it at times. its crazy because the rest is so well researched and done, it blows me away they'd pick such low hanging fruit. recently watching 1997 berserk made me realize how over 25 years literally nothing has been learned/improved upon concerning female portrayal in typically male dominated action roles in a lot of asian or Asian-inspired media and we've regressed in some ways.

the game takes itself so seriously otherwise but its hard to see the killer robots as anything other than this waifu material they were going for. they could have used the frankly unnecessary anime portraits to depict the apparently gruesome apparations we're fighting. Apparently; because we read how grotesque they are yet we never SEE it. few to no detailed fmvs or close ups of the monsters; a crucial contextualizing technique for low poly models they conveniently forgot to lift when they lifted a hundred other things from the PS1/ps2 classics.

im this passionate because the devs were *this* close. my fear and immersion in the world were nearly broken by one bad strain of world building - wow. almost a resident evil peer, they made an elevated corpse party instead, and this truly amazing world definitely deserved better than that.

An incredible entry into the survival-horror genre, especially when considering this was a game made by only two people. Immerses the player in a mind-bending and horrific world in which you play as a robot setting out to keep her promise. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Signalis is a very very excepcional Survival Horror game, it has all that Survival Horror needs and run all so well. The ambientation is great to the context of the game, the history with plot-twists and some details that makes it confuse and hard to understand makes the experience so fascinating. The enemies aren't new in this genre, zombies with his variations more stronger, but it is part of the essence of this games, that zombie androids (Replikas) with the capacity to get up once you "killed" them adds a new mechanic that makes you feel not safe in the rooms.
The Puzzles are good, they aren't difficult but they aren't easy either, you'll pay atention sometimes. The bosses are good too, they aren't difficult at all but they give you pression that makes the situation tense, they are well. The equipment are the classics, the gun, the shotgun, the magnum, the spray that heals you, and some items that add a little bit of gameplay.
I recomend this game SO MUCH because I love the Survival Horrors and this one is a good one, this is not just a Survival Horror, this is a Drama too, but a Drama with a good script, a Drama with Tragedy.

    Resume of all of this:
You have to play this game, it have good scenaries, great ambientation, great gamplay, great story, good enemies, good bosses and it respects the classics Survival Horrors

The story is threadbare and doesn't really go anywhere. The game constantly dumps "lore" about the world in which the game takes place, but it's mostly useless information about different replika models. The story doesn't integrate with the lore, and the lore doesn't inform the story or the world.

Lastly, forcing you to have a small inventory does not present a "challenge" as the devs put it. It wastes the player's time by forcing them to backtrack /constantly/ to sparse save rooms to dump their items. Additionally an item that is WORN BY THE PLAYER, SHOULD NOT TAKE UP AN INVENTORY SLOT. Are you actually taking the piss or are you just mean?

Seriously...I wanted to love this game, but it just has too many **** design choices and poor story elements. Not good enough.

A great experience but man alive the story is depressing af. The ammo management is pretty strict and the puzzles can be very hard but its a rewarding challenging 10 hr tops experience.

Wow, this game has so much going for it - even if it comes in such a small package (being "only" an indie title).

    - the choice of music, while "silent hill"-esque, is easily enough to sell the atmosphere
    - the amazing attention to detail: moving shadows when you use your flashlight, the use of backgrounds for some puzzles
    - the story, and the fact that it has multiple endings; it's somber, horrific and mysterious
    - the art-style. It manages to look PSX-like and anime, while not losing any detail between those pixels
    - the genius puzzles they came up with
    - the length of roughly 5-9 hours
    - the "cheap" price for 20 $/€

I bought the game for my Steam Deck, seeing as it looked to be a good game for it and I was looking for some "easy to play old-school Resident Evil"-like game. What I got was an enjoyable, challenging game that left me with a yearning for more, and an impact I haven't felt for a long time.

Never thought that an horror game could make me feel anything less than scared.

tl;dr: buy it at full price, and you won't regret it - it's just that good. This game defines a good indie, a good horror and most of all a good game in general.

More like a Puzzle game that you have to go to rooms and solve puzzles not much about survival or horror. Gets tired and annoying fast

Meh. Read some great reviews. The reality is ... pretentious, arthouse, Resi Evil-esque nonsense. The atmosphere is kinda cool but the gameplay is a stale old relic (an appalling, unupgradeable, 6 item inventory which needs repeatedly juggled hundreds of times). The story is nonsensical (to me at least) with weird cut scenes flashing across the screen frequently. I ended up not caringMeh. Read some great reviews. Signalis is a survival horror characterized by ingenious and truly stimulating puzzles: solving even just one can give great satisfaction and pushes us to continue the journey of the frightened protagonist, based on a well-finished and fascinating plot. Some game design choices certainly had a negative impact on the pleasure of the second part of the adventure but net of these critical issues Signalis is a good survival horror, which fans of the genre - especially if you subscribe to Xbox Game Pass - should definitely else try.

Signalis has been in development for 8 years! And it is clear that all 8 years they put their soul into it. From the plot to the sound effects, everything looks very concise. He hides the secrets of this world. If you love classic Resident Evil and Silent Hill, you must play this game as it takes the best from its predecessors. And always listen and remember the numbers!

This is how you make a retro survival horror game. The graphics are heavily stylized, sure, but the dread is present, as is the unease, a brilliant soundtrack and a story flirting with insanity. The gameplay may be traditional, but it’s also been sensibly and sensitively modernized. If only the inventory wasn’t as restrictive and you weren’t forced to backtrack as much…
