Skater XL tickles the same part of my brain as my favorite racing sims. It provides a compelling sandbox with enough depth that it makes me want to do a difficult thing well. It’s simultaneously relaxing. You can fall on your face 500 times, but there are zero consequences for any of it. No one’s keeping score, not of points or broken bones. In troubled times, a low stakes challenge can be a welcome one.

There’s way too little content in Skater XL and a lot of missing things like NPCs which make it seem like the game never got out of early-access. Playing it, however, feels great. Let’s just hope that the developers update the game with a lot more stuff than it currently has.

To say that Skater XL's finish leaves something to be desired is an understatement.

If there's one thing Skater XL excels at, it's that it has a great foundation that shows Easy Day Studios knows how to make quality skateboarding mechanics. Unfortunately, the rest of the experience isn't quite there yet. The uninspired levels, barebones features, and overall unfinished-feeling state makes its 1.0 release look like it's still in Early Access. Its trick system deserves more, and with time, it could grow into a great experience. As it is now, Skater XL lacks spots worth conquering and fails to entice past this initial bail.

Fresh out of Steam Early Access, Skater XL attempts to resurrect the once-popular skateboard game genre through the use of a creative, intuitive control scheme. The core skating action is good, but the game still has too many rough patches.

Skater XL is, simply put, an unfinished product. It's a Skateboarding Simulation Game without the game. A barebones five developer-created maps and three user-created maps have no path, purpose or direction with just a handful of 'challenges' that are identical to tutorials. The skateboarding itself is great, the tricks satisfying to perform and a joy to pull off, particularly due to the control scheme. Will you enjoy it? Possibly, if you're happy making your own fun and you like skateboarding. If you expect a video game, you're going to be sorely disappointed.

A cuddly physique never seen before and animations, that was one of the main reasons for my purchase.

A big challenge along the way has been the fact that Skater XL is the first skateboarding game to be entirely based on physics. The player is in control of the board at all times and can rotate, flip and adjust the tricks in any way they want, so unlike skateboarding games of the past, there is no 'canned' character animation that can represent a given trick.

They developed a novel real-time animation system that can move and respond to player input moment by moment. This involved hand cleaning, cutting, and editing countless chunks of mocap animation for specific requirements that are then stitched together and mixed in real time so that the animation system instantly responds to player input and hits the character a realistic looking movement.

The result of this system is a much more polished and realistic representation of the skate movement. We hope you agree that this new Skater XL animation system looks and feels like a new game, one that is incredibly smooth, responsive, and satisfying to play.

Skater XL uses physics controlled by thumbsticks to power all movements in the game, which is a far cry from traditional 'canned animation' based systems. The precise movements performed through the thumbsticks will make your tricks look and feel different each time, adding a level of expression, customization, and style to the game.

Undoubtedly thanks to the Mods the PC version is the best!!

Great game a little overpriced right now though. Gameplay is very realistic and very smooth. Can't do darkslides though but if you use mods you can.

Love the foot mechanics with the analogics, great way to control what you're doing.

The game's straight to the point, no story mode, no scoreboards no nothing, just skating freely which honestly is refreshing in this genre however I would say it's ESSENTIAL to add a multiplayer mode where you can skate around with your friends in order for the gameplay not to turn repetitive after a while.

Customizing your character lacks in facial and body options but makes up for it in stylish clothes and boards.
To add to it, you can download modded clothes, maps and boards made by the community but unfortunately the game still feels overpriced for the content it has at the moment.
