Spirit of the North is a lovingly crafted indie adventure that's let down by some wonky platforming and simple puzzling, while the mysterious explorative adventuring evokes the memory of Journey, just without quite achieving the same emotional impact.

Spirit of the North is a decent game let down some by subpar controls and underuse of the player character's abilities. It still manages to be somewhat entertaining but is far from a must-play.

Spirit of the North is an atmospheric adventure too focused on its storytelling that fails both in its clumsy gameplay and poor staging. Simple puzzles and repetitive mechanics for another lost occasion in the walking simulator genre.

To some, a short relaxing spiritual adventure through some lush environments will really appeal. For me, I wanted more than what was delivered. I wanted to be a fox, I wanted that feeling like when I was a wolf in Okami, but clearly there was a lot more to that game than I appreciated. Sadly the lonely experience of Spirit of the North is only a transparent, albeit beautiful, imitation.

Spirit of the North may look as nice as it sounds, but it’s largely disappointing and unforgivably boring, offering only a superficial story and sorely lacking interesting exploration.

It took me about 5 hours to get through the game, and I enjoyed myself 90% of the time.

I'll start with the good things about the game. First up is atmosphere, and this game nails it. I was completely immersed in the game for the entire time I played it, and though there is no narration or speaking whatsoever the game gets the tone and plot across to the player. The story is beautifully crafted as well and has symbolic value.

Next is the soundtrack, which I found amazing. It emphasized the exploration and the more somber parts of the game really well. Visuals look great, which drew me into the story and gave a sense of scale to the game.

Now we get to the less polished aspects of the game, starting with the controls. I played this on a controller so I can't say how the game handles on a mouse and keyboard, but the controls are a bit clunky and hamper the experience in some areas. It didn't make the game unplayable, but it definitely made it more tedious in places. In addition, the abilities given to the player are not needed as much as they could have been which makes them feel a bit more like gimmicks than abilities. The puzzles, while mildly challenging overall with varying degrees of difficulty throughout the game, didn't require the same level of thinking as might be expected of a game like this.

However, other than the controls these issues didn't have too much of an impact on the game and the rest of the game offers enough value for me to overlook them. Due to the controls being a semi-major part of a game like this, I gave this game an 8/10 instead of a 9/10.

[TL;DR:] Beautiful game with an evocative soundtrack and great story, but with a few aspects that could have used more attention in development. 8/10, would strongly recommend checking it out.

    Spirit of the North
    A Beautiful Adventure
Spirit of the North is a 5 hour long puzzle platforming game where you play as a fox accompanied by a spirit, at first things are pretty straight forward, and this is when spirit of the north Is at its best, it’s at first a beautiful linear journey, with snow, and ice, and finding symbols to bring to life to move forward, all while beautiful chill inducing music plays in the background, spirit of the north starts as a game that feels like hot chocolate on a cold day and then the second half of the game happens.. spirit of the north becomes more puzzle platform and less puzzle adventure, here you’ll be activating symbols still, but not so much in a linear fashion, they now act as switches, so you’ll be in the same area running round figuring out which switch to throw to move onto the next switch until your able to leave the area, sometimes being introduced to a new ability to help you solve new puzzles, such as the ability to leave your body and activate switches out of reach to your solid form… an ability that has potential, but these puzzles proved to be a nuisance thanks to them being tied to a timer, and the switch so far out of reach that you don’t have a moment to spare on your way to activating it… overall I wish the spirit didn’t leave your body when youd activate a symbol, or destroy an object.. it would’ve bee na much more enjoyable experience just playing with the mechanics and not having to constantly find a flower to pill your energy from in between every switch press… its all just feels overwhelming in the final stretch, really making me miss those beginning moments when things were simple, and it was about enjoying the experience.. I would’ve loved moments like this thrown in between the puzzle solving rather than new puzzle area after new puzzle area.. let me breathe… thankfully towards the end, things start to go back to the way they should be.. back to enjoying the environment and music.. back to enjoying the beauty that is spirit of the north…
Spirit of the north does have its pacing issues for the 2nd half of this 5 hour long game, but the overall package makes spirit of the north a must play for adventure and platforming fans…
I give Spirit of the North
    a 7.5/10

The graphics are really good except that you get a lot of draws in. I particularly like all the lighting effects. There is a very nice orchestral music in the background, center around a piano. I played the game with a controller without rumble. There are some glitches with control, especially with jumping. I felt it was missing some animations there too. I never did get stuck on or in a wall. There is no tutorial and it's sometimes weird on that end. But the game tells you just enough and you have to find it out. I found chapter 7 to be very confusing in terms of sens of direction. Chapter 8 shouldn't have existed, it has no content to speak of. I give it a 78%. Nice game with positive actions. For a small budget game, they did a tremendous work. You should buy it if you like those games. Fox don't bark, by the way. But that's ok. Expand
