Streets of Rage 4 left me feeling like a ten-year-old kid playing his Genesis again, while still managing to bring modern gameplay and variety to a classic series. There was no way for me to keep my expectations low with this series returning yet Lizardcube still managed to blow those expectations away. I can say without hesitation that this is the pinnacle of a long-dormant series and genre; a game I'm confident I'll be returning to for years to come.
  2. Apr 29, 2020
Streets of Rage 4 lives up to its namesake, delivering rock-solid gameplay in a gorgeously animated beat 'em up that serves fans and newcomers alike.
  3. Apr 29, 2020
There’s not a bad thing to say about Streets of Rage 4. The action-packed gameplay and responsive controls give you an incredible, satisfying beat ‘em up experience whether you’re playing alone or in local or online co-op. The extra modes are fun, and the multiple difficulties are inviting, and each provide a unique dynamic. After 26 years, Streets of Rage is back and better than ever.
  4. Apr 29, 2020
Overall, while it isn’t perfect and doesn’t quite feature some of the more versatile quality of life features in the genre – Streets of Rage 4 still delivers an incredible experience. The increased focus on the narrative works surprisingly well despite the genre being known for having razor-thin plots. The combat flows smoothly. Long-time fans will love the latest entry in the series, while newcomers may want to start with an earlier entry as some of the humor and fun is tied a bit too deeply into callbacks to really work on a series newcomer. The game looks great, plays even better, and has one of the finest OSTs in the genre’s history. The 25-year wait for Streets of Rage 4 was worth it.
  5. Apr 29, 2020
I think DotEmu and Lizardcube knocked it out of the park yet again. Clearly there was importance on being truthful to the series while adding in new elements to make the game feel fresh and exciting.

It’s much more friendly towards newcomers than the arcade classics and yet it doesn’t put off the veterans of the genre. A sequel worth of its predecessors. [07/2020, p.76]

Simply put, this is the return that fans have been waiting for. Streets of Rage 4 delivers in so many ways that the $24.99 price point seems more than reasonable with all the included content, even with the short story mode. It may prove to be overwhelming for those unfamiliar with what it brings to the table, but you can’t deny how much love was put on the screen for beat-’em-ups and this franchise in general. If you can take the heat, you should absolutely jump in and send a signal that this is a game worth playing.
  8. May 21, 2020
Streets of Rage 4 is much more than just nostalgia and fan service. Streets of Rage 4 is the revival of the beat em' up genre and a must have no matter what.
  9. May 20, 2020
It looks great, sounds great and plays great, and its appeal is so direct and immediate that whether you have hours to waste or just five minutes, it’ll send happy signals to your brain within seconds and last the duration. At eleven chapters it’s the perfect length, and yet I can’t help but feel that I’d keep playing for as long as it kept throwing me new chapters. Then again, “New Game” is right there. The same thugs will happily line right back up, likely with the added confidence of a higher difficulty setting, and I’ll be just as happy to keep punching them.

Whether you are a veteran of the franchise or not there is a fun game here to be had by all. Plenty of characters to unlock and pick from, 2 player online co-op, 4 player offline co-op and a couple of different modes to venture into after you complete the story. Feel like you need more of a challenge? Arcade mode expects you to do the entire story in one sitting with one life just like the "good old days." The art style is magnificent and the satisfaction you get when you do start to feel out the combo system and the enemies weaknesses is second to none. While there have been many great beat em' ups in the past 2 decades. None have had that Streets of Rage feel that is unique to those Sega fans. I can safely say, this has it.

Streets of Rage 4 it's a gorgeous homepage to a forgotten franchise from Sega. Still loved by his fans, Guard Crush signs the best entry in the Bare Knuckle saga in 2020.
  12. Apr 29, 2020
A worthy successor to the classic oldschool brawler trilogy: Streets of Rage 4 shines due to its electro beats and wonderfully crafted visual design, especially in its animations. While capturing the essence of the original games, Streets of Rage 4 manages to bring a seemingly old concept into a modern era.
  13. Apr 29, 2020
Streets of Rage 4 is the perfect love letter to Sega's fan favorite beat-'em-up franchise. It captures the spirit and soul of the games while adding great new mechanics and tons of style. At its heart, it's a short, sweet, and well-made game about punching criminals until you can punch the biggest criminals of all. The price tag might be a bit steep if you're not someone who loves beating things up with friends, but for Streets of Rage fans, it is everything it should be.
  14. Apr 29, 2020
A stunning modern sequel to a classic series, Streets of Rage 4 delivers great combat, wonderful music, and guaranteed enjoyment every single time. Once you get stuck in, you will be coming back for seconds.
  15. Apr 29, 2020
Streets of Rage 4 doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but honestly, that’s okay. The game’s dazzling visuals, silky-smooth action, varied level design, and sexy sense of cool more than make up for a few minor old-school irritations. Veteran Bare Knuckle brawlers will get the most out of Streets of Rage 4, but it should provide a satisfying thumb workout for players from all eras.
  16. Apr 29, 2020
Streets of Rage 4 proves to be a heavy hitter, paying homage to the beloved series while not being held back by what came before. The new art style shines, the soundtrack is as good as ever and I enjoyed every minute of it. It’s a game I’ll be revisiting for a long time to come. Day one purchase worthy game.
  17. Apr 29, 2020
Streets of Rage 4 is an absolute triumph. It looks stunning, it sounds sublime, and it plays like a dream. SoR 4 delivers fistfuls of knock-down, drag-out action for fans old and new, all at a modest price. It's been a long wait for the Streets of Rage faithful, but comebacks rarely get much better than this. GRAND UPPAH!
  18. Apr 29, 2020
The artistic direction, the fan service and the gameplay strike with precision and rhythm to knock out fans who in front of so much mastery and love for the fight can only bow humbly before entering the ring feverishly.
  19. Apr 29, 2020
Streets of Rage 4 might be one of the pinnacles of the beat’em-up genre, seamlessly mixing arcade and co-op fun with absolute depth of visuals, a good soundtrack, and fantastic overall fighting design.
  20. Apr 29, 2020
Following up a series as renowned as Streets of Rage with a new entry is no small feat, but Streets of Rage 4 hits hard with its signature frantic action and stylish audiovisual presentation.
  21. May 5, 2020
Streets of Rage 4 has taken a bold step into a new age of gaming and it’s landed well. As a sequel, it carries on the legacy well with a stylish lick of paint to please even the most scrupulous of fans. Its pleasing to know that titles, no matter how old, can be adapted with such care and attention to recreate all of those stirrings it invoked long ago, but for a different audience in a different time. And times most assuredly are different.
  22. Apr 29, 2020
In an era of remakes and remasters, bringing a new entry to a long dormant series is a bold and difficult thing to do. Streets of Rage 4 adds modern stylings to its classic aesthetic and gameplay to create a modern mash-up that is hard to put down. The story mode is a perfect length with a smooth difficulty curve. Controls are easy to learn and natural to master, with the inclusion of plenty of multiplayer options and a large variety of characters to make for some fantastic friendly brawling. While I would have preferred the inclusion of a dedicated grapple button or a dash ability, the experience we get perfectly encapsulates the arcade experience without compromising the integrity of the game or your own skills.
  23. Apr 29, 2020
Streets of Rage 4 is a comeback in style for a legendary saga. It offers a smooth combat system and hours of fun for those who still appreciate good old brawlers.
  24. May 11, 2020
Streets of Rage 4 is a great sequel and an excellent addition to your game collection, whether you're an old fan of the genre or you just want a beat' em up game to have a good time. It may not thrill you much if you are not so fond of side-scrolling beat' em ups, but it is guaranteed to offer you many hours of pure fun, especially in the co-op mode.
  25. May 22, 2020
Despite the super armor mechanic, there’s still an absolute ton to love about Streets of Rage 4. The enhanced combo engine is a neat addition that can lead to some seriously insane beatdowns, four player local co-op’s great, and the sleek graphical style, fantastic music and bonus retro characters are all excellent accompaniments to an undeniably strong entry in the 2D beat-’em-up genre. It’s a truly wonderful return to form for a beloved gaming franchise that’s been absent for far too long.
  26. May 6, 2020
The best thing about Streets of Rage 4 is that it feels like a real comeback. In a world where everyone is rummaging through an old toy drawer to see what movie, series or game can be revived, this title feels like a natural step in the franchise. Of course, it's not a revolution in the genre because it repeats both virtues and failures from the past. Streets of Rage is back to stay.
  27. Apr 30, 2020
Streets of Rage 4 is the comeback that this series deserves, its faithful to the original feel of the genre but with a modern touch.
  28. Apr 29, 2020
Streets of Rage 4 is exactly what we hoped it would be: a heartfelt tribute to a long gone era that doesn't try to revolutionize the original formula and keeps it intact, delivering a very fun and solid experience.
  29. Apr 29, 2020
Streets of Rage 4 masterfully revitalizes the 26-year old series. The nostalgic feeling of bashing thugs into the pavement solo or with friends has been expertly recreated with loving faithfulness. The soundtrack and atmosphere pay tribute to the original trilogy while forging their own identity. The future looks bright, on the Streets of Rage.
  30. Apr 29, 2020
All-in-all, this is the most fun I've had with multiplayer these past few months, and I'd recommend this game to both newcomers and Streets of Rage fanatics alike. Not only is this a heartfelt throwback to the golden years of couch co-op, but it's also an extremely well-balanced and impeccably crafted romp through a city in need of saving.
  31. Apr 29, 2020
It's clear that a lot of love went into making Streets of Rage 4. The developers have taken this classic series and added just enough to make it their own while also building off of what makes this series so great. The length of the adventure may be an issue for some, but there are more than enough reasons to return to the streets for another round.
  32. May 22, 2020
It’s a true sequel to Streets of Rage, with enough tweaks in its gameplay to make it relevant in this day and age, albeit without complicating the welcoming simplicity of the long-lost beat ‘em up genre. Fans of the series should definitely give it a try.
  33. May 14, 2020
A fantastic arcade throwback, Streets of Rage 4 remains faithful to the classic series, whilst adding its own fresh twist.
  34. May 9, 2020
A great comeback for the series, Streets of Rage 4 is a great game, with amazing gameplay and a killer soundtrack. It's a bit lacking in the extra content department, but what IS there, is great.
  35. May 4, 2020
Streets of Rage 4 is a dream come true for nostalgia addicts of the fighting game genre. It consciously rejects the modern era and will therefore not appeal to everyone.
  36. May 1, 2020
With its martial arts attacks, weapons, and general urban chaos, Streets of Rage 4 feels like a natural extension of the series. The game may have taken a long, long time to arrive, but the developers' love for the license and genre shine through in nearly every area. Late-game difficulty spikes and limited movement options dull the experience a bit, but, overall, Streets of Rage 4 is a remarkably fun game, particularly when played with friends. Hopefully, we won't have to wait decades for a follow-up.
  37. Apr 29, 2020
If the worst complaint I can come up with is there isn't enough, then that sounds like an overall win. Nostalgia will be the key determining factor in whether or not this becomes your favorite entry, but Streets of Rage 4 is, without question, a great game.
  38. Apr 29, 2020
I have a lot of games on my plate right now, and I think it’s a good sign that I want to go back and keep playing Streets of Rage 4. It’s something that feels good to control and look at and listen to. If you are going to make a beat-’em-up in 2020, the act of punching better deliver a shot of dopamine. And this game absolutely crushes that.
  39. Apr 29, 2020
Streets of Rage is back with its old-school gameplay, refined and pumped for this fourth exit that also delivers beautiful hand-drawn visuals.
  40. Apr 29, 2020
Streets of Rage 4 delivers a powerful celebration of brawling nostalgia with a host of great modes and distinct characters.
  41. Apr 29, 2020
Streets of Rage 4 is a small, concentrated hit of beat 'em up excellence. While its length and lack of extra modes might make this offering seem slim, it makes up for it with brilliant fighting, effusive style, and another solid set of tunes. If beat 'em up games are seeing a revival, Streets of Rage 4 is leading the charge.
  42. Apr 29, 2020
It’s the best kind of retro throwback, reminding us how hard these kinds of games could hit.
  43. Apr 29, 2020
Streets of Rage 4 doesn’t do much to advance the formula of classic beat ’em ups and that’s what makes it great. The game can be completed in roughly three hours, which is just enough for this type of game. Unlocking all the Easter eggs is a nice way to add to the nostalgia fix. Playing through with each character offers a slightly different game experience, but the real joy comes from playing these types of games with friends. Streets of Rage 4 is a must play for fans of retro beat ’em ups.
  44. Apr 29, 2020
As it turns out, Streets of Rage 4 is the best kind of revival. It absolutely revels in the franchise’s roots, but the designers have put a lot of thought into what does and does not work in the old arcade beat-‘em-up formula.
  45. 80
Meet Streets of Rage 4 on its own terms and you'll discover a sometimes cheap, yet often rewarding revival of a once dead franchise. The soundtrack is stellar, art design fantastic, animations superb, and controls precise. But if you expected all the former sins of the genre to be absolved after 26 years you'll have to look elsewhere.

It’s no secret that beat ’em ups are better in co-op, but it’s especially evident with SoR4. If you’re playing on your own, prepare to get juggled to death, but if you bring a friend or two – you’ll be the one having a party. [Issue#246, p.54]
  47. Apr 29, 2020
Streets of Rage doesn't do much to innovate, but it's a beautiful brawler with just enough depth to stay engaging through multiple runs.
  48. Apr 29, 2020
Streets of Rage 4 delivers the greatest hits of the classic series and is at its best when played with at least one friend. If the primary focus was delivering a traditional Streets of Rage experience with a modern coat of paint, it absolutely succeeds. But while it layers on a few new and interesting mechanics, it’s still a very conservative update to the quarter-century-old format that feels like a slave to the past.
  49. Apr 29, 2020
Streets of Rage 4 is a great continuation of the classic series, though it doesn't do anything revolutionary.
  50. Apr 29, 2020
Streets of Rage 4’s simple approach to combat and content is enjoyable in short bursts, but it doesn’t have the hooks to keep you coming back. This beat ‘em up feels like an homage to the ‘90s, but it’s also stuck in that era.

I'm in love with my biggest gaming surprise so far in 2020. SoR4 is easy to share with friends and easy to get hooked on. Its levels are choreographed with tons of enemy types from across the series so that you don't land in the usual "ugh, same enemies again" fatigue that even the Genesis originals suffer from. And, heck, Lizardcube and Guard Crush were kind enough to bring back the cheesy two-player "battle" mode—and it's actually kind of legit, since it neatly implements the special attacks' new risk-and-reward proposition. If you're on board with the scant length and the game's urging that you replay it a few times for maximum value, I heartily encourage you to spend 10 satisfying hours with this beat-'em-up rebirth. [Ars Technica Approved]
  2. Apr 29, 2020
Streets of Rage 4 feels more like a celebration of that history inside of a new and updated world. I will continue to play an absurd amount of this game in the years to come, and I’m glad to fit it into rotation when deciding which in the series I want to dive into with friends.
  3. For anyone hoping it would bring a little modern fluidity to a long-stagnant genre, you might have to moonwalk upwards from this one. But for Ragers, it’s a sturdy score-attacking blowout to while away some hours, perfecting your flying knees and enflamed uppercuts, arguing over who deserves the trash salad.
  4. Apr 30, 2020
I’m not sure I’ve ever played anything quite like Streets of Rage 4. There are lots of modern games that attempt to feel retro or remakes that update classics. But this is something different: a sequel that maintains the tone of a classic without missing a beat, yet doesn’t feel dated at all. It may look different, but it turns out, fighting street punks never goes out of style.

This is Streets of Rage without a doubt, anyone who says otherwise has NEVER played an SoR.
It doesn't help that someone called the game slow yet IT'S THE FASTEST PACED SOR to date.
Instead of just mashing this time though, the elegant juggle physics allow for some pretty sick combos between you and your partner that weren't really possible before. Combined with the series' entire soundtrack and every character that's ever been playable in SoR history, this is the definitive SoR experience.
