Tales of Arise is so well done with the story, graphics, battle system, music, characters and voice cast that it is a must-play for anyone. Even if you aren’t normally a big fan of role-playing games the story is so compelling there is a lot to love here.

Tales of Arise is a genuinely exceptional JRPG that does little wrong. The reworked combat mechanics aren't perfect, but in the grand scheme of things that doesn't matter. Its storytelling, character development, visuals, accessibility, and PC version quality have all been produced to world-class standards. Bandai Namco should be proud, and fans should be thrilled.

Tales of Arise sets a new gold standard for traditional action JRPGs. This stylized adventure's presentation and lavish production is a treat for anime fans and RPG enthusiasts, and it brings new life to the long-running Tales series.

Tales of Arise brilliantly succeeds in breathing new life into the Tales Of saga. With its universe and its successful characters, the title delivers a striking adventure that takes advantage of superb environments thanks to a unique graphic rendering. The fights are not left out either since they show great intensity with always more spectacle, sometimes even if it means confusing the action. If we can blame it for his clipping, its talkative side, or its redundant bestiary, we still salute its many qualities which suggest good for the future of the series.

The Tales series makes a triumphant return with Arise, a game that delivers excellent, highly polished RPG action that stands above its predecessors. Despite being a RPG, Tales of Arise features a rich combat system that makes the title contend with some of the best action games released this year.

Tales of Arise is a strong addition to the "Tales of..." series that will surely satisfy those looking for a worthwhile JRPG experience. However, we must point out the timidity shown in not innovating and limiting itself to a standard scenario and a predictable structure. Perhaps that's why people love the series: because they know what to expect. So, if you do too, feel free to invest in Tales of Arise.

It’s not an absolute slam dunk for the return of the Tales series, but it’s a solidly-crafted JRPG with a great battle system and fabulous environments to adventure through. It’s a shame the dialogue and story don’t match the stellar work done elsewhere, but on the whole it’s still a trip well worth taking.

Expand

When I think about JRPGs in my head, I think about turn based combat. I believed a game just can't be a real JRPG without turn based combat.
Boy was I wrong. Tales of Arise is a masterful JRPG. The combat is fast, flashy, and exciting. The world is bright and beautiful. The item and skill progression is satisfying. Most importantly, the characters, although somewhat one-dimensional, are wonderful, and the story, although cheesy, is engaging, interesting, and emotional.
I finished the game with a strong feeling of melancholy that I was leaving this world and these characters that I had shared so much time with. In gaming, this is a feeling I most strongly associate with JRPGs, not any JRPGs, but the really great ones, and Tales of Arise is a really great one.

TLDR: I've been pleasantly surprised by Tales of Arise.

This review is for old fans of the series who may be hesitant to try Arise. I fell in love with Tales of Phantasia and Tales of Destiny as a kid, and up until Berseria I preordered every Tales-like game I could get my grubby hands on. I've been increasingly disappointed with each 3d release for various reasons, however, until I finally threw up my arms and decided maybe I've just outgrown the series. I vowed never to preorder a Tales game again.

    My gripes with the Tales series boils down to;
    - Characters either got way to angsty or way too squeaky
    - Levels were too big and empty and felt like they were built using assets from a scrapped MMORPG
    - Writing that felt like the writers never played the game or saw it in action
    - inconsistent art direction between characters, enemies, and environments
    - combat that felt needlessly gated in certain ways for the illusion of complexity

Tales of Arise hits different though.

First of all the art direction has improved greatly over the last couple of games. Everything feels like it inhabits the same world. There was a graphical overhaul done to the game before its release and I think taking a final pass over it was the best thing they could have done.

Characters are well designed and NOT annoying. I can't think of one Tales game where there wasn't one character I just refused to utilize simply because of how annoying their characterization was.

It was also the first 3d Tales game where I found myself switching the controlled character a LOT, I found more than one character enjoyable to play when I usually just stick to whoever can whippety-whap the fastest.

The writing is still long winded and every character has to tell you how they feel every time you move through a doorway, I found myself skipping all of the skits again. But that's okay, I've already learned how to human in my old age, I don't need to enjoy everything about the game to appreciate it.

Combat has far fewer constraints on it than previous titles, cooldowns are short and you can switch between characters quickly. Each character's gimmicks are pretty simple to pick up and actually fun to use. Nobody feels wasted.

    Give it a go.

I hope their next tales game is well written like berseria but have combat from arise Expand
