The Assembly is a good idea with great building blocks for its intended exploration and puzzle mechanics but it feels somewhat undeveloped. It'll no doubt leave you intrigued yet ultimately pining for more. [Tested with HTC Vive]

As a videogame equivalent of a 1950s pulp science fiction short story, The Assembly works. But it’s nowhere near as good a morality tale, or a virtual reality experience, as it needs to be in order to truly stand out.

I’m certainly eager to see where nDreams take us to next, as they hone their craft in developing for virtual reality, but The Assembly is sadly just a first step on that journey. It does some interesting things, with a nicely constructed story split between two characters and contrasting styles of gameplay, and it gets the controls right for first person exploration in VR, but without that, it would struggle to stand out from the crowd. [Tested with Oculus Rift]

While the visuals and the control scheme are well executed, storytelling and puzzles lack challenge and depth. [Tested on Rift and Vive]

It promised the elevate VR to a new level: instead, it's further weakened the case for early adoption. [Oct 2006, p.77]

The Assembly is yet another example of mundane game design attempting to hid behind the novelty of VR. The mileage in this strategy is running out. [Oct 2016, p.122]

I have a lot of patience for VR control schemes with wonky elements. Developers are still figuring out how best to create games for VR. But there has to be a valuable experience to balance out the frustration those control schemes can create, and other than a single moment of empathy for a suffering animal that I don’t think would have been possible without VR, The Assembly failed to deliver that experience.

More than just a tech demo, but still far from a defining VR experience – especially given the plain visuals and unfocused story and gameplay.

The Assembly feels like a small part of a bigger, much more engaging game. It's a good foundation for a world full of mystery, but it ends just as it starts to get interesting. A game that fully explores the dystopian facility, its history, and the state of the outside world is something I'd be interested in. However, as it is, The Assembly is hard to recommend.

I'm enjoying Battlefield 1. It's not a huge departure for the series, despite the period, but it is meaningfully distinct from Battlefield 4. That may disappoint those who simply want progression that mirrors the jump from Battlefield 3 to 4 – more guns, more features and new maps.

Really with VR tech is that all possibilities? Disappointed then. I think posibilites are much higher - high life, deux ex. Just copy one that and you have the success. But a point click no enough. It has excellent visuals but is devoid of life making the experience a bit too solitary. The gameplay does become a little repetitive as you basically search through emails, drawers and cupboards over and over with one character and tackle some not so tough puzzles with the other. It's an interesting story/concept but simply too short and lacking features to make it stand out. If you don't mind being immersed in a world which lacks visual variety and can handle the gameplay quirks then it's worth a shot. If you're easily bored or require a bit more substance with your games then this probably won't appeal to you. Full Review »
