An essential survival game keeps the perfect balance between playability and realism, which drags you in and won’t let you out. The game’s cold atmosphere couldn’t ruin even a few little mistakes and a slightly weaker story. [Issue#278]

Deep, brutal, and hauntingly atmospheric, The Long Dark is a survival game done right.
  3. The Long Dark‘s long-in-the-making story mode was worth the wait. And with an eventual total of five episodes each looking to last between seven and ten hours, it looks like it may well prove a truly epic survival experience.

The art and the well-thought-through presentation make The Long Dark an excellent survival genre. The cold, the hunger and the danger of the Canadian countryside leave a big impression. It is too bad the story is not as well made.

With its stellar survival mechanics, The Long Dark makes for a brutal experience that requires patience and micromanaging to fully appreciate. However, it’s brought down by some bugs and a story mode that leaves much to be desired. It’s nonetheless a satisfying test of survival in a gorgeous setting – as long as you can brave the frigid cold.

The Long Dark: Wintermute is a great survival, but the campaign does not convince.

It's important to remember that The Long Dark is just waking up from early access. It's cold, hungry, and huddled somewhere under a rock face, but it's just gotten the fire started. Another three story episodes are still due, so there is time to turn things around for Will and Astrid. However, because the best parts of The Long Dark are already alive and well in survival mode, perhaps Wintermute's weak beginning is reason enough to stick to what's worked for the game all along, blemishes and all.

Survival games have been all about zombies or similar creatures, never the pure realistic struggle against nature. That's where The Long Dark comes in. It's not a friendly game despite it's soft art style, you will starve to death, freeze to death or die to exhaustion (not to mention wolves). It uses this kind of cell shading graphics yet it impresses for how much it feels real. The sense of clinging to life is always present when you constantly find new places, train tracks, trailers, a dam, makes you hold on to hope, for a better day tomorrow. It may sound easy, but believe me - it's not. There are a lot of different ways of dying and you never know what will kill you this time, so the game itself makes you feel nervous... Expand

I cannot really find fault with this game at all, the full release is out, and there are a few bugs which
the developers are promptly handling. This is not only a consummate survival game, it is a Life Lesson Game, this game will expose your greed, force you to plan in advance, and challenge your critical thinking skills. The artwork is magnificent, the music scores are perfect, and the game mechanics are outstanding. I have over 2000 hours in the game, and I only want to play more,
in a time where most games are about kill em all and let God sort it out, this game is pensively personal, quietly moving, and increasingly difficult. When played on Interloper mode, the challenge to stay alive, with Permadeath always waiting to end all your hard labor, makes even the most trivial mistake a game ending defeat. With the Story Mode, RPG, element in place, Hinterland has given the new player a way to learn the subtleties of the game while giving experienced players the information that they have been wanting to know about for years. In my opinion this game is a

One to one, tet-a-tet with mother Nature is unbelievable experience! No zombies at all, no multiplayer and all it's negative, it's just your life, choose: be alive or be dead. Despite fact that this is alfa, i didn't find any (!) bugs. Graphic is special, very stylish, I love it!. If you like nature - this game is definitely for you. I am siberian, so winter is my passion and this miracle gives me possibilities to live in my passion in many ways!
I am sad only about one thing - that I can not put you 20 score here!

If you turn of the lights in your room, put on headphones, this is by far one of the most immersive games ever. The devs are super involved and this is an early access game that i would for sure pay for, even though its something I dont often do.

    Pros:
    -95% really immersive
-Really unique in comparrison to other games in its genre
-Up difficulty, freeze 2 death almost right away cause im dumb :(
-You have the option of going for more exploration and hunting, or barely raking by in some super intense survival situations like starving, fainting, getting mauled by a bear etc...
-Crafting an inventory is easy to manage
-The art style mostly fits the game
    -Super immersive Audio
-Great stat tracking of your deaths and tons of other stats
    -Simple UI
-They just throw you into the game without explaining which makes it super rewarding
-Permadeath makes it super immersive because you care about your life for once in a game
    Cons-
-Some really gross textures, although its a small game so w/e
-Can be a bit hard to learn some things
Some of the controls can be annoying but not really a big deal
-The skill system has potential but could use some fleshing out...
You can't craft a ton, and the diversity of items could be improved, although its already fine i guess..

dont bother playing this game, it might be good but now its just a walking simulator. so much walking, for not so challenging survival.... Thedont bother playing this game, it might be good but now its just a walking simulator. so much walking, for not so challenging survival.... The main quest is a very long tutorial (at least until episode 3) even if the cutscenes are great i have to admit. For myself il lost my time with this game, the game bugged at the end of episode 2 (the aurora never show after more 15 days waiting at the dam) and that'it .. no savegames, after so many hours running in the snow i deleted the game, and bye bye. You do this by raiding huts incl. taking water from the toilets.
But this is all I have been doing. The graphics (mediocre at best , not artistic), design and sound do somewhat invoke the feeling of a very cold and lonely place; but the fascination wears off fast and then all you want to do is find a car, other, to get away, but it´s not there. So I stopped playing.
