While the storyline is a bit lackluster, The Room still manages to be a polished and intriguing experience. The puzzles are mostly fun to solve and the enhancements for PC version ensure that the game looks, sounds and plays great. [Sept 2014]

There are plenty of reasons to avoid buying ports of mobile games on Steam, but The Room is the exception to that rule. So many of these games feel like a quick cash-grab, but I am happy to say that The Room is not one of them.

"Another stupid tablet game, which is being sold dirt cheap, and it will not entertain more than for an afternoon. It has definitely bad controls, it looks horrible and it is completely about nothing." After hearing we review the originally mobile game conversion, you might have responded in the similar fashion. I do not blame you, but it is all about the prejudices getting stronger because of the bad mobile games' reputation. But there is little to no truth in that statement. As a matter of fact, The Room is a game with surprising depth, it looks great, and with ease it rolls over many classic adventure games or independent pieces contemplating about the meaning of life.

While it's to The Room's credit that the graphics and sound design remain impressive with the transition to PC, and able to compete against other PC titles, the gameplay does not, and without a compelling story the experience ends up being sadly forgettable.

I got this game thinking it would be similar to an 'Escape Room' game. So far it has a similar concept: find clues in the area but instead of a room, you're unlocking a safe. This game is really really challenging and i look forward to finishing it! :) Also, with notes left behind by the previous owner/creator of the safe, there's an ominous tone that hints to something sinister (similar notes to the game 'Amnesia') Expand

The game is short, but the length is perfect imo, with anything longer likely to drag on. Very satisfying puzzles, some of them requiring some braining but none prohibitively difficult. Expand

Some games insult the player's intelligence by making the puzzles solvable by a baby and other games make it so abstract that it's unrealistic to do it without a guide. This is where puzzle games can shine as they don't have to integrate themselves into a game with already a set difficulty. They can get more creative with their puzzles and environments because they aren't restricted by a game world.
The Room is a great game with incredible artstyle. All of the puzzle boxes are meticulously crafted and thought out. The puzzles can be challenging but never frustratingly so. The animations are amazing, being some of the best I've seen in gaming. This game and it's sequels are definitely worth your time.
That being said, the first Room game doesn't really have a very solid story, there are notes you can find lying around buy you can't really piece together a big picture, it feels like the player doesn't really have a reason to solve these puzzles. As the franchise went on, they definitely solved this problem and made the puzzles a lot more substantial. I wouldn't say this makes the game worse in any way, it just could've been more.

I think they thought they'd make a mysterious ending but they had just messed things up. it was pointless, I recommend it just in case you have lots of free time and you don't know what to do with it.
