  • Summary: Total War: ROME REMASTERED lets you relive the legacy that defined the award-winning strategy game series. Remastered to 4K with multiple improvements to visuals as well as refinements to gameplay, it’s time to revisit a true classic. Not everyone gets a second chance to conquer the Roman Empire.

Rome Remastered is the perfect way to experience Total War's antiquity offering in 2021 short of a third Rome title.

The very heart of the playf experience has been remodeled to adapt to the current times and this means a functional user interface, revised in a minimalist style, stripped of distortions and unnecessary frills. Better management of menus and visuals, the introduction of a new type of unit in addition to the unlocking of 16 new factions (and of course all the DLC and mod support), finally, complete an offer that both the old centurions desk as much as the new Tribunes of the Plebs should not be missed.

A lovingly crafted refresh of a classic Total War game that manages to recapture both its triumphs and its tragedies.

All in all, if you're a Total War fan, especially someone who loved Rome: Total War back in the day, Total War: Rome Remastered is a fantastic way to jump back into the older game with some modern improvements. You'll have to get past some of the more archaic bits of the design, but the core experience: conquering the world and ushering your faction through Rome's civil war period is still so satisfying.

This remastered gives a new look to one of the greatest Total War ever made, but the series has gone too much forward in the last years and Total War Rome Remastered sometimes feels like a trip into another era.

A decent remaster of a great game. I just hope the devs will squash all the remaining bugs, tune-up AI, fix pathfinding and add mod support.

Total War: Rome Remastered is a blast of nostalgia for those who have fond memories of losing hours of their night as they attempt to conquer just one more enemy city. Nostalgia is also the primary selling point for the game, however, as new players would be better-suited starting with a more recent title and experienced fans will miss certain quality of life features present in modern strategy games. While Total War: Rome Remastered does an honorable job of reviving an old classic, the fresh coat of paint does little to cover up its outdated mechanics, and it's likely that only established fans looking to return to a title they loved once before will get much out the remaster as a result.

Not just another lazy retexture, but support of multi-core processors, large amounts of RAM and tons of QoL optional features have been added. Devs fixed many AI and balance issues. Added trade agents and previously closed factions. Surprisingly, with such an impressive list of changes and new features, Ferals managed to carefully preserve the spirit of the original. And most importantly, there is the possibility of modding, thanks to which Rome and Medieval 2 are still afloat. Expand

I will say that if you are expecting a remake, you will be disappointed. Its a remaster, not a remake. The amazing thing about the remaster is that it allows you to toggle back to the original settings if you wish. They added medieval2 merchants, overhauled every piece of art in the game, improved campaign ai, and increased modding potential. Sadly the battle ai is unimproved, which was the weakest part of the 2004 release. You can expect to have the same enjoyment as the original, with some benefits. Currently there is work on a remaster for a famous mod, Roma Surrectum. Roma Surrectum is a mod which extends the campaign map, adds factions, and overall improved the original experience. Now that 31 factions are possible in the engine, as well as more regions,, you can expect an experience like no other when it releases.

Overall this is the best way to play Rome 1. Rome still surpasses it's sequel, especially now, and if you deal with some jank, it is a game on tiers with Ocarina of Time in charm and quality. I give this game a nearly perfect 9/10.

The UI is awful compared to the original and makes the game 10 times more complicated than it needed to be. After 15 years of playing Rome the bizarre control changes they made to the battles can be extremely frustrating. With some changes this could have been a 10 out of 10 but the poor UI and controls really hold this remaster back. Expand
