Like any tw game it does have its typical total war issues. Nothing serious. The game performs great on my old gtx 780. I`m getting high/ultra settings and a lot of eye candy on. + huge unit numbers. Which is perfect for me.

Keep in mind that installing the latest nvidia driver makes the game hang on the warhammer logo. Playing steam offline helps for now. Suppose this will get fixed soon as rtw2 had the same issue.

TW Warhammer offers the choice of 5 distinct races. Each of the races plays quite differently and has some unique mechanics going for them. Character customization is better than any TW game before, with lots of magic items, skills and followers to tailor them to your needs. The campaign map looks spectacular, with lots of awesome-looking landmarks such as skull mountains, volcanoes and unique structures allover the place and when the evil factions Chaos or Vampires get hold of a province, the terrain changes to a hellish landscape, which is a nice touch.

The battles run a lot smoother than Rome 2 and the the variation in units is massive. Each race starts with some basic stuff like spearmen and archers, but as you progress in the game you start to unlock the creatures that make them unique, such as demigryph riding knights, flame cannons, boar-riding orcs towering giants or undead dragons. Bringing your customized generals and heroes into the fray feels really rewarding, as they send lesser warriors flying just like Sauron did in the Lord of the Rings movie.

Overall the game seems somewhat easier to play. In Rome 2 and Attila in particular you had to juggle food, squalor, sanitation and all that, but in Warhammer the buildings have no penalties so you can just build whatever you want. Some regions have unique buildings or resources so there is some variation and not every province will be a carbon copy.

Since the Campaign part of the game is turn based, the time it takes to resolve rounds is important, and I have to say they are REALLY quick, roughly 15-20 seconds with the movement of enemy characters turned off, which is a breather since Attila would take up to a minute which is really frustrating sometimes.

There are two negatives I can point out so far. First, in battles, the magic spells are not completely balanced yet; magic is a limited resource so you can only cast so many spells, but magic missiles seem to miss all the time and do less damage than a cannonball if they do hit while the recharge of magic spells is so fast that you wonder why they even have a recharge time, as you're waiting for mana anyway.

The second is the lack of variety in battle maps. The battles in the field have a lot of variation, but siege maps are mostly the same. And there is not really any other type of battle (no river battle, no minor village battle), which is a bit of a shame if you're in it for the multiplayer battles and you want to play a different type of battle.

So, overall, 9/10, good performance, beautiful fantasy setting, lots of unit variation, nicely distinct races to play, but it lost a point because of no good balancing on magic and they should have put in more different battle maps.

This game has exceeded my expectations on release. It runs very smoothly and I haven't encountered any bugs within 40 hours of gameplay. I didn't pre-order and I got the Chaos DLC for free on the first week. This is a great example of companies listening to their fan-base as I wanted to see how the game turned out before purchasing. Good AI, Unpredictable AI, New hero system, Air unit

If you want to have hundreds of Hours good entertainment with a High replayability in a Fantasy strategy Game: This is your Game. Its will be the first complete Warhammer Game ever made. And im sure such a mammuth Project will not come again so soon.
Thanks CA/Sega to be so brave and made such a High Risk niche Project of High quality.

My one negative is the lack of a story. They could have turned the whole chaos thing into a grand epic but instead of get a "Baby's First Book". That aside, the gameplay is rather quite enjoyable.

That plus CA and GW's decision to allow mod support gives me a lot of faith that any future DLCs/FLCs/mods will keep fleshing this game out over time, but I totally feel that the game is worth the 60 bucks as is right now.

Didn't pre-order but purchased day 1 and still got the pre-order bonus race pack which seems worth it for the different race experience.

It doesn't run 100% perfect but it seems to run better then Rome2 or Attila and I thought those games were alright so this is easily "good performance" in my book.

The economy is simplified but idk if I really miss trying to juggling squalor and corruption forcing me to build certain buildings i don't want instead of just the unit producers/stat buffers that i really want. Corruption is now more tied to number of armies instead of settlements which seems like a pretty good game play change so far too.

agent spam is annoying but not completely broken, there are mods for them though to give you less headaches.

Lords/Agents don't age and die so it actually makes them matter way more to me, wasn't expecting that. Some spells need tweaking but overall pretty good.

    performance 8/10
    battles 10/10
    races 10/10
settlement management (seriously, I haven't enjoyed this part of total war since Rome1) 9/10

Diplomacy is the only thing that seems to be underdone compared to other Total War games, but this is forgivable (it does have the word "war" twice in the title...)

Each race plays differently and each has a massive amount of character and charisma. The graphics and sound are lovingly crafted, nothing in this game has been skimped. Each of the 5 factions has fully fleshed out graphics, sound and story. It all gels into an immersive atmosphere which can suck you in for hours.

All in all this is a very well put together and polished game. It was clearly crafted by a team that loves warhammer and the result shows. Delaying the game has turned out to be for the best because it has been such a sweet and smooth release. A truly great game, worthy of soaking up endless hours. Recommended

Having played over 30+ hours now, I can say that I think the negative reviews reflect only the growing pains for this expanding series. This game bespeaks polish and genuine care for the source material. The game, while having been simplified, also throws in a lot of new mechanics that, in the end, wouldn't work with the unique needs of these fantasy factions. As such, newer, streamlined, and more intuitive campaign mechanics have taken their place. Not to mention the fact that this game does more than any other to get new players up to speed quickly.
If you like both Total War and Warhammer this may well be unmissable. Just know, this game is more Warhammer than it is Total War. I think most of the bad reviews expected this to be a Total War game with Warhammer mechanics, it's not. This is a Warhammer game with Total War mechanics. If you want this to feel like a follow up to Attila, you may want to give this a skip. Everyone else should come and enjoy one of the best Warhammer games ever made.

Also, they have truly succeed to create 5 factions with different gameplay:
    - Dwarfs need to avenge any insults against them. If they cannot avenge, they face revolt and they are mistrust by other dwarfs allies
    - Ork can chain victory to start Waaaagh that spawn armies to attack opponent
    - Vampire can corrupt around them and raise armies at old battlefields
    - Chaos ... ok it is like Attila horde (with giants monsters and spawned horrors)
    - Empire may be more classic if you do not want to be too lost in a fantasy world

To those complaining that it's "dumbed down" or "too simple", most of these changes were made for the AI's benefit (both in the campaign and on the battlemaps). Oh, but CA should've magically made the AI better to handle more complex mechanics! Sure, but they've been trying that for YEARS and they haven't succeeded. You know what that means? It's not possible. You think you can do better? Go submit your resume; I'm sure they could use you. Total War: Warhammer was a good chance to simplify some of these mechanics because the fantasy elements provide complexity in other areas (like character development) to help offset some of the sacrifices.

To clarify for those who don't know, building trees and province management have been simplified. Gone is Food; gone is squalor; gone is a variable tax rate (you can choose to turn taxes on or off, that's it). In exchange, enemy Agents (especially those of Chaos and the Vampire Counts, who have a Corruption mechanic) provide a source of constant/repetitive negative Public Order, as well as the normal things like conquest. Dwarfs have a unique mechanic, their Book of Grudges, which also affects Public Order. It's not as difficult to manage PO as it was in previous Total Wars, but that doesn't mean you'll have +100 in every region.

As for performance, there were some Day 1 issues, completely normal for any major release. They've been resolved for the vast majority. The game runs well at 1080p, but at 1440p+ you'll start to notice the framerate if you have anything less than the most powerful graphics cards. More optimization can be done, yes, but it's LEAGUES better than Rome II or even Attila.

I gave it a 9 because there's one thing that I know will be fixed, but which is still a bit of a problem right now: the lack of additional units and playable factions. I can't rate the game based on what will be coming in the future, I have to look at what's here now, and while it isn't lacking - each faction feels different enough to warrant a full campaign, unlike previous Total Wars where everyone was human and more or less the same - it does make me wish for the rest of the world. For those who don't know, this series is planned to be a trilogy, with two sizable expansions coming in the future. DLC and Free-LC will come in the meantime.

Oh, and probably the best thing - if you don't like something, there's a good chance you can mod it out. Don't like regional occupation (the system that limits you from occupying every region on the map)? There's a mod for that. Want both Legendary Lords to start at the same time? There's a mod for that. Think battles are too fast or the AI is not aggressive enough? There's a mod for that. Any game that provides mod support deserves much more than a bad rating simply because you don't like what's there in the vanilla version. Think about it!

So I feel a large majority of reviews are written inadequately so as someone with over a hundred hours and a long time total war fan(medieval tw 1) I'll give my thoughts for those who are familiar with tw

Note: I, like total biscuit, don't believe in scores. I just gave it an 8 cause it was green symbolizing my overall approval.

    Pros:

-Game is stable on release *for the majority of people*

-Heroes add a new dynamic to the game that can make battles much more involving

-Asymmetrical factions are a definite plus

-The ai is much better about diplomacy(although on legendary they are all war mongers)

-Large units are functional for the first time ever in a tw game. My biggest concern for this game was, based on the crappy unusual unit ai for elephants, chariots, etc in past tw games, the large units were going to suffer from abhorrent pathing, which turned out not to be the case.

-Each faction as a unique research tree and mechanic making for unique play styles on the campaign map as well as the battlefield for each faction.

-Removed unfortified city battles. This decision is great imo because the majority of battles in my experience with atilla and rome2 were unfortified city fights. These fights always degenerate into uninspiring meat grinders with little to offer in terms of diversity.

    -Great mod support

    Cons:

-Auto balance is absolutely horrid(more so than usual). Particularly with 1 man units(certain heroes, giant monsters). You will auto resolve a fight with 99 percent chance and they die every time despite everything. Another issue is that sometimes auto resolve is just illogical when reinforcements are involved. I've seen on multiple occasions I have attacked a settlement where I had a 99 percent chance to win the auto resolve despite the fact the enemy had the same number and composition of units as me spread over two stacks.

-The hero item system in the game is absolutely pathetic. The stat bonuses they provide are negligible the majority of the time. This combined with the fact there is no way to buy items(which would have been a great feature) makes their presence quite hollow. Items also do not affect your hero cosmetically which is a damn shame.

-Magic system is simply dysfunctional in the game's current state. A lack of direct damage scaling for larger unit sizes combined with useless vortex spells makes for some disappointing fireworks.

-The multiplayer is barebones, but for some reason they have a ladder despite the fact this game is absolutely NOT balanced yet.

-Battle AI still can't handle pincer attacks from front and back. It will simple face all of it's melee units to one front and let itself get sandwiched

-*MY BIGGEST PROBLEM*City siege battles are a joke. Ever since Shogun 2 and ESPECIALLY after Rome 2 I've be absolutely appalled that my favorite type of battle in the game, sieges, no longer feels like a siege. In warhammer tw all units have ladders FOR SOME UNEXPLAINED REASON and yet they can't attack the city without having a battering ram, siege tower, or some piece of siege equipment. Also for some unexplained reason the large iron gates can literally be punched open FASTER THAN A BATTERING RAM by a squad of infantry when accounting for how long and how many casualties a ram receives when trying to knock down a gate. Now turrets seem to have infinite range to attack units on the edge of the battlefield for some reason which is ungodly stupid because if you put reserve cavalry in the back of the map it is dispiriting to discover they all died before the gate opened...

-AI controlled group attack is missing for some reason...

-Playing as chaos feels quite hollow as they have access to all of their best units quite quickly

My thoughts on some other issues

No Naval Battles: To be honest, I always felt like naval combat has been a hollow feature and more of a check box then a fully fleshed out feature. The simplistic nature combined with the tedious unrewarding style of combat make for an interesting spectacle maybe once or twice but afterwards i would just auto resolve everything naval after that.

The unusual restriction on races being unable to capture certain types of provinces: CA knew about this, so they worked with modders so there would be a day 1 mod to change it so you could capture everything like normal tw.

Battles are too short!:Another mod that was released day 1 which properly adjusts moral, armor, damage, etc for fights that feel much more weighty. Unfortunately you also have to take the various building, hero, and recruitment changes as well as the improved campaign ai(oh no) that come with it. Just know you may find the battle system in vanilla unacceptable if you which for more realistic drawn out fights.

Overall I feel this tw game, as many people have put it, is a step in the right direction lacking the stellar qualities to make it truly amazing but no doubt a good experience for a triple A title(if you are into tw).

    Gameplay:
The gameplay in general is smooth and entertaining. The core mechanics revolve around tailoring your army to your opponent and having the right dudes fight the right bad guys. Flank your opponent and when a unit you don't like gets too close, bring it down in a hail of bolts and bullets. Sadistics like myself will find endless entertainment in seeing broken enemies get run down by ones sinister forces.
However the gameplay have some issues:

    1. Lord Characters.

Being the embodiment of the player on the battlefield, it is not surprising that these guys are true powerhouses. Maybe even on the tip of being too powerful. Seeing as individual models in the game do almost no damage, and characters having a minimal amount of space around them, it is not uncommon that you can have 10 units hitting a fleeing lord and it still takes like 30 seconds before they kill him. While the Lords aren't exactly overpowered, I think units should have more of a chance against them. They aren't even human right now.
    2. Running and walking.

Seriously this is a mess. Clicking AND ATTACKING makes your units walk. Meaning if I want my units to actually charge an opponent (and get a bonus) I need to press R.

    3. Fog of War.

Want to attack that ranged unit in the forest over there? Okay, point and click, press R to run.
However if that unit stops shooting for a second and goes invisible again? Well, then you have to manually re-assign your unit go kill them or just walk/run into the forest. More an annoyance because of the lack of an attack move button which usually exist within the RTS-genre.

    4. Missions and Quests.

The quest system in TW:W is fantastic, giving you quests based on your current situation during the campaign, giving you these small objectives every now and then. The missions however, to get some of your Special Character's gear? I went through the entire Empire normal campaign without ever touching it (which was stupid of me since those were easy). The Vampire Counts however, need to travel across half the map to a region they have no interest in and win a battle there. Whether that is historically correct or not is irrelevant. That is just annoying to have to do...

    Graphics:

Gorgeous. Playing it on low graphics is a nightmare (which I had to with my Radeon 6930), almost pixelated, but it runs excellently on my new GTX 960. Very nice.

    Setting:

The setting in general is glorious as I mentioned in the intro. My only complaint are the Vampires who are absolute jokes. I don't know why, but Creative Assembly has for some reason made them all talk like they were part of a horrible Shakespearean play. They even make references to stupid parodies of his plays. "You wouldn't want to make the same mistake as McDeath". Come on. Way to butcher the characters of an entire race. YOU EVEN HAVE A QUOTE IN-GAME WHERE MANNFRED SPEAKS NORMALLY! God dammit CA.

Other than that, it is really, really good. The distrustful elector counts, the arrogant nobles of Bretonnia, the destructive forces of Chaos and Orks and the stubborn and grudge-holding Dwarves. Everything feels incredible.

In terms of blood and gore, I tend to agree with the public opinion that it is missing. Also, most models have some sort of invulnerability save. Hitting them with direct hits from bloody mortars sends half the dudes flying and yet doesn't kill a single one. Not a single time occurence. You'll see.

    And yet, I am hopeful.

The game has quite a lot of glitches but none which are gamebreaking. The fundamentals are definetely there, but with some patch-polishing I believe this game could truly shine the way it should.

Overall the score is 8. The game is lacking alot of things but also have lots of positive sides which are plain for most people to see. The game is entertaining and fun in that sadistic and maniacal way which I tend to enjoy, and I think alot of people would support that statement.

While many give the game bad reviews, my gut-feeling tells me they are basing it too much off the earlier Total War games, which I have never played and never intend to play.

In newer releases I would like to see:
    - Attack move Button
    - More non-magic and non-hero ways to kill heroes
    - Blood and Gore
    - Attacking makes the player's units run
    - More Races (Skaven are obvious, Wood Elves/High Elves would be pretty good too)

    And of course.
NEW VOICES FOR THE VAMPIRE COUNTS! (And you can help by donating on www.makethevoncarsteinsgreatagain.com. That was a lie. rip Von Carsteins.) All in all a nice game, easily on par with other newer releases from most other firms.

Even though history is a better setting they still managed to make an interesting game with the Warhammer franchise.

There are lots of new units and features here to qualify the 50€ price tag so even if you don't like fantasy and Warhammer like me there's still a good game here.

Difficulty at the higher levels is punishing in a way that makes pulling out the win all the more rewarding.

It plays great in comparison to the poor TWR2 and the removal of many bad systems combinded with the addition of some great new unit types make this game complex and not shallow at all.

First Magic, it is a huge change and influences the game tremendously. Use your mana well as the regen depens on the amount, Fun mechanic!

Furthermore the ''large'' units like gigants are great they are super strong and beat every other units but are hugely expensive. this makes it risk reward as every faction has access to multiple strong anti lange units. even artillery functions as it.

Speaking of artillery, they nailed it. Art (artillery) is fun to use and relativly balanced. Cannons will shoot down hordes of skeletons but wont do **** against some scaled dragon ogers. art can now also target air which is great, using explosive rounds against dragons is huge.

The races are fun in every way. but the new way they affect atributes is even better, Armor(the mechanic) is great, Deathblow, terror spectral units, these are all new tools that we havent had before.

All in all I can tell everybody that the multiplayer is competitive and more complex that it has ever been.
There for I give it a soild good, which means a 10 on this platform.

Now if you compare that to Rome II, where the battles could turn into a slog, the Warhammer mechanics are amazing. Your Lords/generals are heroes in their own right and unlike the previous games you don't have to worry about time taking them away, so you can level them up to your heart's content in a gloriously fleshed out fashion.

In short, it scratches all of your itches: It's a deep strategy game with management of resources and buildings. It's got tactics as you plan and command troops. It's got glorious visuals and sound as your armies clash with impact, explosions, and magic effects. It has a detailed RPG mechanic for your heroes as they gain power.

I would say more, but I'd rather be playing it.

The Warhammer IP allows the battles to get to a whole new level for Total War, as well as give the factions more variety than any other Total War game has had before.

One thing I was surprised by was how much better the campaign was as well. City upgrading is straightforward and intuitive, as well as more varied between factions. Technology also seems to provide more important bonuses than previous entries. The best part of the strategic campaign is that Creative Assembly seems to really have designed it around getting you into the battles, which are the strongest part of this game. The only thing working against this is how difficult it can be to catch enemy armies and force them into battle, but throughout my campaigns I never found a shortage of epic battles to fight. Quest battles also work better than I expected and provide narrative to the title. The chaos invasion also provides more narrative, and is somewhat similar to the Huns in Total War: Attila.

The battles themselves are without a doubt my favorite in a Total War. Each race plays so different, and each unit has its own place. There isn’t the problem previous titles have had where there are a ton of the same unit with minor stat changes to give more “unit variety.” Every unit feels like it has its own place. The addition of monsters, flying units, hero units, and magic all really adds a lot to the battles without being overwhelming.

The unlock trees for agents/heroes is also much better than previous entries, and it seems like Creative Assembly went all out and wasn’t afraid to make these units powerful. Being able to unlock a flying mount for your hero really changes the way they interact with the battlefield as well, and you no longer have to keep your general back for most of the battle. Agents are still annoying on the campaign map, mainly due to the AI spamming them and the difficulty of countering enemy agents.

Overall this Total War game has been very solid for my first 40+ hours of playing, and I expect to rack up many more to come. Definitely give this a look if you’re a fan of strategy games. And for what it’s worth, this is the smoothest release for an ambitious Total War yet, so congrats CA.

Blizzard, please buy out CA so we can get some good games like say...Overwatch

*Edit* Finally got the game to launch past the first load screen into the main campaign by choosing to not do the tutorial battle.

Now that the game actually works it is fantastic.

Warhammer components unique armies, creatures, MAGIC, stances, hero leveling and a sort of narrative aspect give it the fantasy feel you would want. Air combat is awesome.

Total War components: Still have stances, map is beautiful, province management like in Rome 2 where a duchy has about 4 different regions in it. Diplomacy options are still there. They have added a council where you can set your heroes into similar to Crusader King 2. These guys give you extra bonuses. City tiers like before, though only capital regions reach the cap. The battlefield itself has the fantasy elements actually on the map. Overall great job with this part. CA you need to work on your damn launch date bugs, triple, quadruple test the next TW game.

Gripes: More of what has been mentioned, i really dont like that you cant declare war on everyone. Magic at times seems a bit OP and I can see a patch fixing this. No naval stuff, though there is very little water on the map anyway. And of course, where is the rest of the world and races? 4 is awesome for now, and if they next DLC is like this I will likely buy it but it definitely is a marketing gimmick.

Once all the races are out I expect/want a map like Empire Total War with the various hemispheres and trade nodes where I can conquer all of the map!

Following this logic, all previous TW games only had ONE faction, did anybody complain about that? Also, with a mod we can play pretty much any faction of any race we want (haven't tried it yet).

About dumbing the game down: For me it just feels like they removed a lot of unnecessary stuff and made things clearer. But there's still plenty of complex decision making involved when managing settlements, diplomacy and armies. So far I love the fact that I don't have to spend 10 minutes in city screen for each settlement. Makes the game flow so much smoother.

After spending 40 hours in game, I can only say good things about it. And I'm looking forward to at least 160 more hours :)

But how is the actual game you might ask? Well, it's the best TW game released in a long time and maybe ever. The AI is without question the best ever seen in a TW game and it actually feels like the AI factions are trying to win the game. Both on the campaign map and in battles. Normal difficulty is already more difficult than "hard" was in previous games because it's not so easy anymore to cheese the AI. Stupid stuff like running around your settlements with a single cavalry unit while the defensive towers slowly but steadily take out a whole enemy army does no longer work. The AI reacts to what you do and tries to flank whenever possible.

Even diplomacy works. It's still not very deep but at least what is there works this time and factions act in ways that makes sense which is a MAJOR improvement over previous TW games.

I also really like how diverse the factions are. There might not be that many, but the difference in play style, both in battles and on the campaign map, between the different factions are HUGE! There are the Dwarfs that center around defensive turtle tactics. Or the Chaos campaign that feels almost like an RPG since you do not build any settlements and only move your heroes with their armies across the map. All the playable factions are very well done and how diverse they are is one of the biggest strengths of TW Warhammer in my opinion.

The only issues I had with the game so far are a few balancing issues which are to be expected considering how diverse the factions are this time around and which will likely get fixed in future patches. For example most ranged infantry (archer and the like) are too weak in my opinion and never seem to be doing enough damage to justify having them take up an army slot. Also Dwarven infantry might be a little bit too strong. And there are quiet a few spells that seem to be mostly useless.

    Overall 9/10

Food is local only, binary tax selection, and probably a few other points I can't think of. Where CA has MORE than made up in complexity is unit variety. Now, new factions truly feel new. Each faction has it's own feel, from what I've read about Warhammer, they did a good job of respecting the board game too. From monstrous flying behemoths to impossible to kill killing machine armored knights, this game definitely adds variety in spades. Oh, there's magic too. If you made it through this rant, just buy the game, you won't be disappointed. If you're worried about performance, it is very well optimized. It probably runs better than R2, it looks better for sure. Expand

Followed this game during development and more than once I cringed when something I thought would go horribly wrong came up. Now that the game is finally here I am pleased to see that most of my fears were unwarranted. One of the smoothest launches for a total war game in recent memory.

The game is good it works great and the game play is smooth everything is how it should be. However the worthless DLC is a point against the game. Locking off factions and troop types. Keeping out the major races like the Elves and Bretonia seems like another penny pinching scam in that regard but by no means a bad game.

I was hesitant to purchase Total War: Warhammer. Rome II was such a disappointment when it released that it soured my love for the series to the point I never bothered with Attila. I played every Total War game prior as far back as Medieval Total War. I even picked up Total War Eras. Sure Empire and Napoleon had their problems. But even they paled in comparison to the mess that Rome III was hesitant to purchase Total War: Warhammer. I played every Total War game prior as far back as Medieval Total War. I even picked up Total War Eras. Sure Empire and Napoleon had their problems. But even they paled in comparison to the mess that Rome II released as.

My concern with this Warhammer iteration was whether CA had learned from their mistakes and could deliver a game that worked upon release. I am pleased to say that Total War: Warhammer is a solid effort. Its well optimized and runs well even on my modest i5 with 8gb of Ram and a GTX 750ti with 2gb of Vram. Surprisingly the GPU requirements for the game seem rather low. My 750ti falls just short of the recommended GTX 760. File size is also odd considering the minimum and recommend specs call for 35gb of HD space yet the download from Steam was only 9gb. The game had a few delays and perhaps they were for the best given how polished the end product is. The game is richly detailed on the unit models themselves right down to the UI. The UI is also highly customizable allowing you turn off unit markers.

It needs to be said that I know very little if anything about the Warhammer universe. However I love high fantasy, magic and fantastical creatures. Its this new spin on the Total War formula that spoke to me. Yes you can jump into this game without any prior knowledge and have a good time. The intro cinematic gives you a quick rundown of the four factions Empire (Humans), Dwarves, Greenskins (Orcs), Vampire Counts and a fifth the Chaos faction as dlc (more on this later). The core of the game is still very much a Total War game and will immediately feel familiar to series veterans. You still build buildings and units, manage taxes, etc. However there is a noticeable lack of troop formations like wedge, etc. The developers have said they used them where applicable as many of them aren't part of the Warhammer IP.

You still have your infantry, ranged, and mounted units as well as siege units like steam tanks. In my time with the game it appears as though there are no naval battles like in previous games. The game does however feature aerial units like gyrocopter and gyrobombers which add another layer of tactical strategy to the equation. (This makes me dream of a Warcraft Total War someday). You also have giants and trolls as well. Among other new touches are subterranean battles where you can fight. There are tunnels that give you shortcuts but can present ambushes. One of the cool new features is a tactical map. You can move the scroll wheel to pull the camera back to an overhead view and get a general look of the battlefield at a glance.

The AI is something CA has been trying to get right for a while. It was an absolute mess in Rome II at launch. Its certainly a good deal better here. Enemies will flee only to reform and try to flank you. Reinforcements may appear behind your position. I have also noticed less 'clumping'. That isn't to say there still aren't issues. I have had instances where I give a unit an order and it seems to just remain in the same place. Fortunately these instances have been infrequent.

The biggest issue I have with the Total War license and indeed SEGA is the 'whoring' of faction DLC. SEGA already does this with Relic's Company of Heroes. Its no secret that the announcement of Chaos as a preorder bonus rubbed fans the wrong way. This prompted CA to change the preorder bonus to being available for the first week the game was on sale. This was a step in the right direction but I feel its a band-aid on a bigger problem. When you announce DLC 6 months ahead of release that will be available day one? It should be in the base game. Its not like this game has a ton of playable factions anyway with just 4 available (not counting Chaos).

In game content shouldn't be locked behind a pre-order paywall under the guise of a 'bonus'. Certainly not on day one when most games have embargoes leaving many consumers with few reviews of said game. If your game is good you shouldn't have to worry about embargoes or giving fans 'incentive' to buy it. It wouldn't surprise me if they charge $5 for 'blood' like they did for Rome II. On a positive note they have said that the game will be supported with free DLC including Lord, Race, and Campaign packs. Hopefully we see other races like the elves get their own campaigns.

In the end if you are a fan of high fantasy or Warhammer I think there is a lot here to like about Total War: Warhammer even if it may have a learning curve. Conversely if you are a Total War fan; the change to a fantasy setting may prove to be an engaging unique experience.

My only real criticism is that the game allows you an almost birds eye view (like Shogun 2), in battlefield mode, when the graphics should be on show.

This is most definitely a game that bucks the curve when it comes to the usual spiral of poor releases following disasters. This is not EA games after the high or Warcraft 3. It obviously divides opinion.

There are problems with multiplayer, as well as issues related to balancing, but I can't help but feel like, if this was a totally new game released by VALVE- then user scores would be higher.

The graphics are beautifully rendered. The artwork is true to the Warhammer franchise. And, if you really pay attention to xp, then you become invested in your legendary lord and lords.

Unless you are a SERious total war gamer, and emotionally invested in Med2 mods, such as Third Age, then you will love this game.

I was a bit sceptical about this, but it is really enjoyable, if you can look past the fact that it is not history themed. For me the base game is 7.5, with mods, its easily 9.

    Cons:
-Province management is not too exciting, call me stupid, but i liked it in previous titles, it was challenging, and had a lot of options. Squalor, food, upgrades for weapon/armor/horses are removed, only thing that remains is public order, and it is boring to build up every province the exact same way.
-Vanilla combat is super fast, and unbalanced in my opinion.
-Sieges are strange with the small battle map, and 1 direction of attack, also the AI cant handle them well, neither attacking nor defending.
-Chaos DLC... But it was handled better in the end.
    -5 faction.
-I have not seen any executions in battles. (Hope the blood DLC will bring some)

    Pros:
-Vampiric and Chaos corruption changes the map quite nicely.
-Good progression for Heroes and lords, good quest battles for legendary lords
-There my be few factions, but they are really different from each other, differnt roster, buildings, visuals, heroes, different mechanics (Raise the dead, Book of Grudges etc..)
-Mods. With mods you can pretty much modify the game to your liking.
-They made an excellent base game this time.

It is different than previous games, and it is refreshing. If they won't abandon historical episodes entirely in favour of this i will be happy.
You should buy it or wait for a discount, but dont skip it on principle because it is not "historical".

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. TW:Warhammer is the right step in the right direction for Creative Assembly. Especially, after the less than satisfactory releases of Rome 2 and Attila. I was worried that Warhammer would fall into the same void but much to my surprise it is one of the best Total War games I have played so far.

Currently, I have logged six hours of campaign play. Using the Empire (Human Race) I have stormed though the boarding states using diplomacy or military action, merging these weaker states into my Empire and bolstering my economy and military might. Every approach is different and each NPC Faction seems to have it's own strengths and weaknesses . The turn based campaign map and the real time battlefield are beautifully designed. Battlefield terrains in earlier titles such as Rome 2 seemed to repeat often but Warhammer seems to have corrected this situation.

Realtime battles stays true to the TW style but there are some added abilities that we have never seen in this franchise, such as magic. Your Mage can be an effective tool in altering a not so balance battle. This same can beside for your opponent. Therefore, be wary of the enemies army and if there is a hero among their ranks be sure to have one in yours. There are also an abundance of new methods to deal death and destruction such as armored vehicles, Heroes and flying Generals just to name a few. The more familiar portions of real time are unit verity, unit bonuses and tactical battlefield maneuvers and mechanics.

In regards to AI there really isn't much of a difference in my opinion. There is improvements to the way your opponent responds to your movements and commands but I can't say if this is do to over all AI or a difference in the capabilities of the newer units on the battlefield i.e. Mages, tanks, massive club welding giants and so on.

Somethings that I have noticed that are missing from this title is the tax management system and the political management system. Six hours of game play really isn't enough time to come to a complete understanding of all the ins and outs of a game like Warhammer but these fundamental and to some players, critical feature (Tax Management) were important tools to control the population and fund your infrastructure and military. It's possible that this feature has been implemented in a different way and I just haven't discovered it yet. Traditionally, tax management was located in the Treasury Tab and was easily accessible ,which doesn't appear to be the case for Warhammer. With that said, this wouldn't be the first installment without tax management however, I'm curious to know why this feature was removed or relocated in the first place.

Political Management, appears to have been scaled back as well. Political occurrences do happen from time to time but they seem to be more of an afterthought. There is a political management tab that brings you into to very familiar pyramid scheme. There are a total of three tiers (Emperor being the highest tier) and a total of 8 political positions give or take. Generals are the only eligible candidates and each general based on his rank and personality will provide bonuses or penalties to their appointed position. Basically nothing new from past installments. What is missing is the family tree, which was a huge disappointment for me and a lesson I would have though CA would remember from the Rome 2 days. In other words, no dynasty building this time around. Nevertheless, these missing mechanics are more then an inconvenience for some of use seasoned TW fans and this game has far more to offer, which completely over shadows these minor discrepancies.

All in all, this is a great game and a fresh start for the TW Franchise. I highly recommend that you give this game a try even if you are on the fence. I was one of those who wasn't excited about the Fantasy direction taking by CA. However, I am relieved that I gave this game a shot. If you are not confident enough to pay $60 for this game please take a look at the gameplay videos like "Lets Play Total War: Warhammer", on youtube.

Single Player AI: AI is solid. Easily as good /better than any other TW to date on both campaign and battle levels. Agent spam is a problem but there are a multitude of mods for you to fix it how you want already.

Races/Replayability: Only 4(or 5) but they are completely and utterly different. Better than 20 factions that are 90% the same.

Negatives: Some animations seem to be missing (gun reloads). No river battles. Autoresolve is heavily in the players favour on harder difficulties (tempting to skip battles entirely).

And then I one day stumbled upon a game called Total War Shogun. I bought it on a whim because the screenshots on the back of the box looked similar to that of the former mentioned games... And every since then I have been a big fan of Total War games. But ever since then I have wished for a new warhammer strategy game. And I always thought that the Total War series would be the perfect place for Warhammer.

Now almost 15 years later, that has finally become a reality. And the game has met my expectations completly. Creative Assembly have stumbled with new ideas over the course of the series, but with this game they have crafted a perfect balance between the new and the old. And the introduction of fantasy elements such as magic, heroes and monsters fits perfectly. The four (five including the Chaos DLC) factions are all distinct from each other, with very different forms of gameplay and a completely different visual feel.

The graphics is gorgeous to look at. The campaign map and the old world of Warhammer looks spectacular and has a lot of character to it. But what truly shines is the battles. The battles has never been as spectacular. The punch of the cavalry charges or the thrill of seeing a massive giant punch through the lines of infantry will never get old. The only thing that is missing to make these battles truly come alive is blood effects, which is sourly needed for a Warhammer game. Some design choices made to the siege battles will not sit well with people, and I am not fond of some of them myself. But the spectacle of Total War can't be denied.

The AI is improved greatly and the campaign gameplay is much more interesting than before. The game offers a good challenge, especially later on when the Warriors of Chaos comes into play.

A truly great launch for a very anticipated game for me. Missing blood in battles and a few poor design choices loses a point from me. But I am having so much fun with this game and it has now taken the place from Shogun 2 as my favorite Total War game.

There are few factions yes, but those five factions you have are diverse and asymmetrical like in no other total war game until now, which makes for a really new and refreshing experience while at the same time making this the first total war that needs almost no balancing at launch; once you've got the hang of it nothing feels really out of place or overpowered. Changing unit sizes in the settings can change the balance too but that's no news either for total war and makes perfectly sense giving an additional level of customization; if you don't enjoy too much monsters and magic dominating the battlefield just play with large or ultra unit sizes.
Blood and gore, and more factions are undoubtedly going to come out as DLCs too.

Well, yes, the strategic options are a little more limited than in shogun 2, but they are not as bad as Rome 2. The RP element in this game is MUCH stronger than in any other TW release. The races are VASTLY different from each other and the AI plays them.... well. Each race has its own character and so do the lords and heroes in the game. I'm having some difficulty with determining just how the heroes are best used, but really, the game is very very good. You will have tons of fun playing and replaying this game for months.

I was waiting for this game for a long time as I could see from the first Shogun how much the Total War is influenced by the Warhammer's mechanics so I always thought it wouldn't be that difficult to implement it. I understand there were various licensing issues, but actually both franchises should benefit from that fusion. Finally they did it, released it and... I have a very mixed feelings. Actually this game completely changed my approach to Total War. Up until this point I always played single player campaigns. They were easy enough even on the hardest diff level, but you felt quite nice about changing the history of the world with some unimportant faction. In this title the Single Player Campaign is slightly flat with factions you can't conquer, dumbed down cities management which worked pretty well in Rome, but somehow it is not the case in here - maybe due to the limited number of units available. There are some tasty features - like when you are playing with vampires you can summon high level units in places of big famous battles or nice different stances for your units depending on your race. I wouldn't count lack of naval battles as negative - they are just not that important part of warhammer world. So all in all - it is not bad Single Player Campaign but not great either and I would prefer playing Rome or Empire. As to multiplayer battles - they were usually too similar from one title to another (with exception of Empire and Napoleon for obvious reasons), hence I didn't play them often. And when I did it was usually pretty boring and repetitive. This Total War seems to be made for multiplayer battles though. I just can't get enough of them. The mix of all Total Wars with addition of magic, heroes and monsters is playable as hell. It brings the memory of Dark Omen played through the serial ports link but on much bigger scale. I've seen some comments about battles being too short - of course, for a Warhammer player they would be, but if had 4 hours spare I would take my figurines out of their boxes and play for real. In Total War Warhammer I fought battles for half an hour and this seemed quite long as the intensity of it was there all the time. So if you have friends which you can't play real Warhammer due to the distance, lack of time or price of figurines then this game is for you. If you want a campaign like in older Total Wars then you can buy it, but don't expect too much. Expand

Starting in 1983, Games Workshop began to publish its enormously popular tabletop game Warhammer. Taking a page from classic strategy games such as those from Avalon Hill and putting it in a fantasy setting seemed ideal for players. Strategy gamers have dreamt of the ultimate electronic version of those tabletop settings they have played their entire lives. The Total War series, beginning with Shogun: Total War in 2000, has achieved that for them better than any other. Total War gives players the ability to have sophisticated strategy play without taking up an entire table (or in some cases the entire basement) to satisfy their needs.

Fast forward to today and we get to see the collaboration of both of these monster titles. Total War: Warhammer, created by Creative Assembly and published by Sega, is the most sophisticated and intricate strategy game ever to invade a PC, utilizing and upgrading the game play from Total War: Atilla while incorporating five of the factions from Warhammer: The Warriors of Chaos, Dwarfs, The Empire, Greenskins, and The Vampire Counts. Each faction is flush with abilities specific to themselves. This gives Total War: Warhammer some fresh new strategies that had become a little stale in the Total War universe. The fantasy aspects are a departure from Total War’s usual historical approach but I feel that long-time fans will forgive this when they begin to play the game.

An Example of the organization of troops
Total War: Warhammer is not a game that you just pick up and play. Warhammer is a rich universe and the Total War system takes time to learn. What you get for your labor is a game experience that makes you feel that you have mastered all aspects of global leadership and not just battle. Diplomacy and civic management are just as important as knocking down walls or casting spells. The size and richness of your army, generals, and heroes also comes from a very deep skill tree. The game does provide an ongoing adviser to assist you through most of this and Creative Assembly has built a wonderful help system with in-depth video tutorials as well to guide all of the newcomers who may be intimidated by the complexities of the game.

The armies are balanced and really well thought, they fit their archetype perfectly. You have the stubborn dwarfs, highly defensive but lacking mobility. The savage greenskins with their expendable goblins and powerful orks. The Empire with their highly adaptable strenght and balance. The sheer numbers of zombies and skeletons summoned by the Vampire Counts and finally the sheer power of the Hordes of Chaos.

The game is simply amazing. It's not a 10 because some people had a few issues on release that CA is already working on.

Best CA game since Shogun 2. It feels very fresh for Total War Veterans given the magic system/expanded heroes/monsters compared to other historical titles which is more of the same. Playing on very hard campaign, the AI seems quite good and aggressive both in battles and campaign map. I use a GTX970 and playing on Ultra smoothly.

    1. Playing as Empire feels a LOT like Medieval Total War. Perhaps too similar. I'm hoping that will change when I get to fight against orcs, chaos and undead, it will feel more "Warhammer".
    2. Runs well on GTX 970 with i3 4130 and 8GB ram.
    3. Campaign map isn't as complex as my brief attempts at TW Empire and TW medieval 2. For me, that's a good thing. Warhammer is a tabletop battle game, and this feels set up to focus on that, with the strategic layer more of a mechanism to get you to the next battle.
    4. I'm already hooked! Can't wait to get to steam tanks and Griffins, face off against Giants, demons and vampires. A slightly slow start, but great game.

    Final thoughts:
    1. Try starting as something other than empire, and it will probably feel less "medieval" and more "Warhammer" from the start. I'm far enough in that I want to continue, but wish I had started as undead or orcs.
    2. Please, PLEASE ignore any 0 star reviews. The game may not be perfect, and the DLC policies are not great, but now way is this worth a zero. A solid, Warhammer/Toral War combo, with minor imperfections, but still a very good, maybe great game.

Than is there race of chaos warriors, it is like a barbarians. AI is improved, battles are more interesting, no stupid situations like in Rome 2. In diplomacy is visible cooperation between races - humans are more willing with humans and very cold against vampires or orcs. Strategy is very important here, raids are very common thing and enemy has no problem to plunder your settlement, where you have invested thousands of game money, than you have to get the settlement back and start from the beginning in construction. Army is created from lords and units - no wandering units in the map. Game has wonderful graphics, various terrain and battles environment and also units, each race has specific units and magic. I have no bigger negatives, It is there good tutorial and guide, it is easy to learn how to play. Summary, it was a dream have real fantasy epic battles game, but now it is real. Expand

Great game for total war and fantasy genre lovers. Very fun and everything you would expect from a total war game. After playing two campaign games as Empire (First one I lost), I found each game is different and your enemies may vary. Its a comeback from the highly disappointing Rome 2, but I still believe the total war series has some catching up to do in general. Good game overall.

Personally my favorite Total War game, and not just because I'm a warhammer fanboy. The game makes an effort to make everybody feel unique and expansive. There's hiccups, but every game has them, and the hiccups it does have are the kind that really get under your skin, but only because the rest of the game is so good. If the game actually had real flaws, you'd never even notice the hiccups.

After the recovery of the mix-up of Rome 2, CA continues to deliver solid Total War installments. TW Warhammer is no exception. Warhammer fantasy lore brings wonders to the franchise.

    Pros:
    - Very unique play-styles of different races. I started playing the Empire campaign and it plays out similar to Rome in Rome 2. You basically expand your territory by different means whilst building your infrastructure. But for instance, Greenskins (they are also a settled race), play out very differently. The game forces you to be in a complete rampaging stage. Also units for different races feel and play very different.
    - Easy-to-manage faction. In Attila, you had to be aware of multiple issues in settlements like squalor, sanitation, food level and public-order. In TW Warhammer, you only need to be aware of the public order. Another important aspect is growth, and that's it. There is no governor system or family tree. Instead, you can assign lords into positions, which provide bonuses. All these changes enable you to focus mostly on fighting, which makes TW so unique.
    - No town battles. In TW Warhammer, there are many settlements & most of them are towns. Town battles are replaced by open field battles. By this change, you are not constantly pitched into assaulting narrow streets. As a con, you cannot really distinguish a field battle from a town battle, as there are not enough clues.
    - No naval battles. Back in Empire TW, naval battles were an important asset as the game covers the colonization era. In Rome 2 & Attila, naval battles work but they are not very important as most of the action passes in land masses. Same is valid for TW Warhammer, so this is not a missed feature. It is likely to obtain this feature in a future DLC however.
    - Performance. The game runs smoothly in nearly all max-settings in my Intel 4790K, 16GB RAM & GTX 970 build. And the graphics are good.
    - RPG elements, quest battles. No reason to further explain these features, but they do provide satisfactory character development.
    - Join confederation diplomacy option. Adds new odds to the table in expanding, and is a return to previous TW titles where you can acquire settlements without fighting.
    - Improved UI, dynamic campaign map.
    - Diplomacy. I think, in this game the diplomacy is more meaningful. You can get along with factions of same race, unite with different races/factions against a common enemy (this might be invalid for some races).
    - Fantasy setting, units.

    Cons:
    - DLC policy (Chaos + Blood & Gore). I think the DLC content of a TW game must be like Charlamagne in Attila or Hannibal in Rome 2, rather than adding stripped features.
    - No huge improvements in AI - but it works just fine.
    - No coordinate based battle map selection in Custom Battle. Instead, you have to select from a number of existing battle maps.
    - Agents. When you are at war with a faction, their agents cause a number of problems, and you are more limited in stopping them.
(I have no experience in multiplayer.)

There are, of course, some problems and most of them are the issues that we know from previous titles. But overall, I think this game is a must own for TW and Warhammer fans alike.

Looks even a bit like a Lord of the Rings battle of Middle earth experience of the movies. This was what I hoped for. And it delivers. Altough you need to create your own graphic settings. Only the ultra looks satisfying. I would advice to lower resolution and put terrain and units on ultra. This gives the best graphics for someone who doesnt have a GTX 980. By building on a strong foundation, it allows its players the freedom of determining their own destiny, with little in the way of flaws holding it back. Sure, I may have some grudges that may never be removed from the great book, but in the end, this is the best experience I’ve had, bar none, when it comes to real time strategy games.

A richly-crafted recreation of the Warhammer world and the best Total War game in years. [July 2016, p.66]

Total War and Warhammer are a match made in heaven and Creative Assembly’s latest release is a dream come true for the aficionados of both franchises. As a fan of Game Workshop’s tabletop original I have waited my whole life for this game. [07/2016, p.70]
