Unbox took me back to a time when games were about fun.

The movement is incredibly fun to navigate with, and provides an additional layer of challenge that will surprise and go against expectations.

The springy physics are almost perfect, giving you just enough control even as you hurtle through the air at speed. [Nov 2016, p.118]

Platforming games were always my go-to genre as a kid and Unbox does take me back to that in some sense, but realistically it brings all the difficulty I would expect from a game on a tablet device and I kind of feel that’s where it belongs.

It reminds you of those great 3D platformers of the 90s, but never manages to reach the same heights as they once did.

With no challenge beyond wrestling with the horrible controls, Unbox is a failed appeal to nostalgia that captures none of the warmth or playability of the games it admires.

I like this style of fun, open world platformer, and this game is a good entry in a genre that I don't see many games in these days.

The controls feel a bit awkward at first (you're a square box that "rolls" to move, so as you can guess it's not completely smooth ^^), but once you get used to it it's fine.
I really like that original system where you sort of "store" extra boxes (up to 6), and they are used both as life points (when you take damage you lose a box) and as multi-jump token (when you're in air, you can consume a box to jump, meaning in total you can multi-jump 5 or 6 times if you're at full "health" when you start).

The main issue I had with the game was the mouse sensitivity, which is way to low even if set to max, meaning moving the camera around is a bit painful.
Also, the story is pretty ridiculous so I preferred to just ignore it.

    1 – GENERAL

Unbox: Newbie's Adventure is an open world platformer where you play as a box. Confusing enough? Wait for the story. You are the latest employee of a self delivery box company and you have to destroy the company enemy. How complex...

I have to say that the game has surprisingly good graphics, despite some glitches here and there, some of those lead to gamebreaking bugs where you have to make a restart since you become stuck under or inside the scenario.

The soundtrack suits the levels, but each soundtrack is short and repetitive. They end up abruptly and that makes it even worse. I've liked the "voice acting"… ok, there's none tbh, but all boxes have a clear personality that we can associate with a voice. That was quite well managed by the team, and the final result is quite good.

    2- GAMEPLAY

Jumping and make precise landings with a square box is quite tricky. The box never lands straight and the movement, as expected, is clunky. I know that the objective is that, but the controls are not easy to grasp, even with mouse and keyboard. With a controller is simply one of the worst experiences I had with a game. After you get the hang of it you start to take some fun from the game. It reminded me of Crash Bandicoot and overall, I've liked to explore and do all the missions.

The missions were a bit repetitive, but I was never annoyed during them. Some are harder than others, but there's no sense of progression, some of the hardest are at the beginning, some of the easiest at the end. For instance, the first boss battle was the hardest one for me.

Interestingly enough you can also drive cars. Don't ask you, as a box, can drive. Just do not think about it, ok? Driving is not a fun experience, since... well, … controls again.

There are tons to explore at all levels, and a lot of collectables to find if you like to do that. I've finished the main campaign in about 8 hours, but you can easily take the double of the time finding all stuff and talking to everyone. The replay value of the game is here, in collecting everything.

The game has some local co-op and you can play with 3 more friends if you wish.

    3 – CONCLUSION

The mix of genres in this game is interesting and I have to say that I've liked it. Beautiful and colourful landscapes, a fun open world to explore and much stuff to do. Very well conceived characters, lots of humour and references to pop culture. The controls made me not want to explore more and is certainly the worst of this game. Even so, if you find this game cheap, give it a go. It's not the best game in the world, but it's very competent and it did not disappoint.
