It was a whispered reminder that great games can do more than impress with sheer complexity and breadth, they can also draw us in close to them as to engage with our humanity.

It’s rare for a game to so ruthlessly and completely nail the altered reality games place us in the way Undertale does. Whether it’s the nameless NPCs you always meet in RPGs or the hundreds of mooks you mow down with gunfire in games like Uncharted, Undertale brilliantly demystifies these conventions and questions why games are still codified this way. But even outside of its ambitious themes, it proves to be a compact, perfectly paced RPG experience with hilarious, tense writing and endearing characters. That it succeeds so completely in its thematic approach on top of all that is what makes Undertale a truly essential experience.

Through a combination of often relaxed but sometimes tense gameplay, a dreamy atmosphere, and genuine characters that feel like they’re actually alive and all living together in this isolated society of longing, Undertale transcends its medium and becomes a genuinely moving experience I would recommend to anyone who is open to a sometimes sorrowful, sometimes hilarious, always bizarre and engaging emotional journey.

Undertale fills me with determination. The biggest surprise of 2015, a unique masterpiece. [Dec 2015]

Undertale is a fresh and original indie adventure: great story, great characters and a wonderful soundtrack.

Toby Fox's work is not just an anecdote: it is perfectly well-thought out. It hides something that connects directly or indirectly to anyone who has spent too much time with a gamepad in his hands.

An interesting concept, a weak execution.

Clever, fun, and full of heart. The closest comparison I can think of in tone are the Mother series, and the games of Yoshirou Kimura. TheClever, fun, and full of heart. I admit it. When I first started playing this game, the simplicity of the graphics and sound byte turned me off. After reading the reviews ofI admit it. When I first started playing this game, the simplicity of the graphics and sound byte turned me off. After reading the reviews of others, I decided to continue pushing forward with the story line. I immediately fell in love with the characters and the lore of it. The lore may not be overly dense and but the minor details have a plethora of character to it. I really feel like some of the reviewers who had a lower score for the game were looking for something that would ascend them forever into a mystified mindset. Truth is, its not. It's just a really fun, quirky game with lovable characters, interesting game play, and determination.

Oh.. wait till you meet Mettaton Ex. His legs will fill you up.... with determination *cough*

Undertale is an absolutely incredible experience. Not a game, but an experience. Witty dialogue, engaging characters, tear-jerking storyUndertale is an absolutely incredible experience. Not a game, but an experience. Witty dialogue, engaging characters, tear-jerking story telling and absolutely original gameplay. If you're a MOTHER fan, this game is especially for you. But even if you aren't, there's enough originality in this game to keep you playing and talking about it for weeks. The amount of creativity and charm in Undertale is overflowing, and even if the game itself is only about 8 hours per fun (for there are multiple endings and paths to choose from- some with exclusive bosses, areas, and music), the game is jam-packed filled with a memorable adventure. The music is also beautifully composed, so much so you'll be humming the tunes from it all day long. All in all, Undertale is incredible. Please go play it for yourself. Expand
