UnReal World is a lifetime's labor of love created by Sami Marannen. It is a game of survival in a world paralleling Iron Age Finland. As you might guess, Sami is a Finn, and he lives his game, and it shows in how great it is. Freedom to choose your own way is what the game is about. I'm not going to get into details in this review, just close your eyes and imagine what it would be like to be 16 years old in the year 900 a.d. in Finland and you're there. You've left home to make your way in the wild world and now you have to decide what to do to survive and prosper. You can fish, hunt, trap, gather berries, harvest wild grains and start your own small farm. Tan animal hides, craft tools and weapons, trade your crafts at villages to get what you need. You can lead a peaceful life or you can choose a violent road, but whatever you choose you're going to have challenges. Try it... you'll love it :-) Expand

Unique mechanics and a VERY unique setting. Survival is difficult, but very rewarding. The developers are skilled and engaged with their game. The community is great.

This gameUnreal World is a roguelike about surviving, and then thriving, in Iron-Age Finland. Its incredibly fun with lots of replay value. This game is so realistic that it is the only roguelike to have been used in a school setting for educational purposes. However, don't let that fool you into thinking the game is boring. From the start, you're racing against time to acquire food, shelter and supplies. The game is open ended so you choose how to go about meeting your character's needs. Fishing, hunting, trapping, farming, building, exploration, trade - this game has it all. The depth of Unreal World gameplay is incredible. Once someone on the forum asked for tips on trapping and got lots of good advice. A new person registered just to say that they came across the thread by searching for real world information on trapping and that the advice given was so accurate it took him a while to realize we were discussing a game. If you like roguelikes, you really should check out Unreal World. One word of warning - it's really easy to get hooked. Expand

It is realistic and fun at the same time, the graphics are clear and easy to understand and mechanics (although they take some time to get used to) are logical although a bit complex. All in all a very good **FREE** experience

That said, the control scheme is ancient, the graphics are primitive even for something released in the 90s, and the learning curve is very steep. Definitely not something the average teenager can just sit down and play, but if you're willing to invest some time into it you'll be rewarded with a very deep and compelling experience. Expand

This is a hardcore survival game with that certain indie charm. If you can do without great graphics and feel comfortable controlling everything with your keyboard, then its worth having a look at it. It's in fact a labour of love and I hugely appreciate this.

Me, I have to concede, never really succeeded playing and my character kept dying. But man did I try! And I'll come back trying again after I have recovered strength playing some other more relaxing games.

In summary my rating is due to:
    -1 because antiquated graphics
-2 because only keyboard control (this sucks the most for me)
-1 because of such a inordinately steep learning curve (lack of tutorial, lack of easy mode,....)

Nevertheless, it's a nice little game well worth trying and doesn't require to spend a huge budget. In fact, I've heard there are ways to get it for free, but I bought it anyway, hoping the developer will invest in mouse control ...:-)
