While the promos, commentary, and female wrestler treatment could use more fine-tuning, the rest of the game does a wonderful job of delivering an experience that’s just a bit more impressive than last year’s entry. For now, all we can keep hoping for in each new game is increased accuracy, larger rosters, better treatment of female wrestlers, and fresher color commentary.
Presentation hiccups and an undercooked Promo Engine aren't enough to take the shine off of 2K's latest take on the WWE franchise. Generously stuffed with the largest roster seen to date along with an encompassing creation suite, WWE Universe mode and a whole host of significant tweaks to the core experience, WWE 2K17 is the best entry in the series since Brock Lesnar last found his mug on the cover.
WWE 2K17 should be marking a new era for WWE video games, but unfortunately it dredges up old problems from the past just as much as it improves with new content. The massive roster, excellent control scheme save for reversals, and extensive creation suite all impressed me, but the little technical nuances just kept annoying me to no end.
Finally, WWE 2K17 is here for current and last generation consoles. The lack of Showcase mode gave the chance to My Career to shine on its own, but instead, showed how badly prepared this mode is compared with other sports games. On the other hand, the game mechanics are slower, hurting overall and experience that need an urgent evolution so the franchise can feel fresh. WWE 2K17 must be taken as a lesson of how a wrestling game should not be.
After previous publisher THQ folded and 2K took over this series with WWE 2K14, I had hoped the WWE games would see a slow crawl out of mediocrity, and that wrestling fans would eventually have a wresting game they could be proud to show non-wrestling fans. Unfortunately, the 2K series has carried forward with the same by-the-numbers combat we’ve seen for years. 2K’s next WWE game doesn’t need to check off a list of incremental improvements – it needs a complete overhaul.
Even with patches, this game has crashed on me more than all of my games combined. They've made some improvements, sure, but the crashing is unacceptable.
I recommend you to read this review. This review is trying to point out what things 2k can do to make it's new WWE game, a giant masterpiece.
Generally this game has 4 pros. and 6 cons. those four great points are:
1. customization is on a great level.
2. all of the wrestlers' entrances are beautyfully made.
3. multiplayer matches have become better with the new roll out feature.
4. beautiful animations and scenes especially for the superstars.
now the 6 horrible things which can make this game be the Greatest WWE game ever made in the history of WWE games if resolved.
1. Difficulty:
one of the most challenging things was to beat the Legend difficulty in Smackdown vs. Raw 2006.!
but now, the most ridiculous AI is on the Legend difficulty. and it's goalless actions in this mode can make "My Career Mode", "Universe" and regular matches boring.
In this difficulty even if you increase the A.I Reversal Rate, you can easily select Tyson Kidd and destroy the Undertaker or even pin him.
Imagine that you can feel all the stress when you face the Triple H, or you are doing your best to stand against Brock Lesnar so that you do not lose the match.
even if implementing these are not easy, perhaps adding a new Difficulty can be handy.
2. Starting Strategy:
there have been 4 options with which you could've start the game. one of them is the No Action mode.
but in this series it's as if the game commences with No Action mode and there are no strategies when you begin the match.
3. Pinfall Mini Game:
the pins in the game need to change essentially, after some time you can escape all the pins easily.
I myself, have escaped 7 times from Undertaker's Tombstone after one second, and I was playing as Kalisto.
the pin system is ridiculously designed and it is far from natural is very artificial. this can make a regular match not only a boring one, but can make it take 30 minutes to finish.
4. Stamina System:
refilling the stamina was a smart move in WWE 2k15, but it doesn't work properly. you can simply do nothing and refill your stamina.
It would have been better if you could just hold a button to refill the stamina.
5. Grapple System:
one of the worst and tiresome parts of the game is the grappling **** spite of having good animation scenes, no tactics can be found there and there is no joy in it.
and you cannot feel that you performed them professionally. SVR 2006 and 2007 did better in this area.
6. Reversals:
In my opinion there should be one button for the Strike Reversal and another button for the Grapple Reversal, because even with the Reversal slot it is still easy to escape most grappling moves and impossible to perform some.
I have played all the WWE series from "SVR Here comes the pain" to WWE 2k17. and I think that the most successful one was SVR 2006.
I really don't know why they do not learn anything from it's success.
This was my review about the game, and a big tip to 2k that can make their game more exciting and beautiful by considering 6 aforementioned remarks about the gameplay.
Thank You.
A very mixed bag with a lot of old mistakes thrown in. Some new features (taunts, promos) but the character creation is still limited and there are a ton of glitches as of 1.01's patch.
Worse still, they didn't learn from the harsh criticism in 2K16's submission, and the current system is back to being sluggish and unmanageable. Add on a nearly-psychic AI that instantly reacts to changes in either submission system (there's last year's wheel and a mash-the-right-button alternate), and scoring a submission is nearly impossible.
