The recently released abomination from 2k (XCOM in name only) drove me to go back and revisit this series and it has never been more enjoyable.

Grab UFO Extender and the patches (google "enemy unknown extended" for instructions) and marvel at this incredible classic in full pixellated HD widescreen glory, with many improvements such as base construction queueing, range based distance, automated manufacturing (so you don't have to make/sell micro to make money), and dozens if not hundreds of other major improvements. The best part is that the innovations are totally customizable... edit UFOExtender.ini to your heart's content and give yourself the perfect muton slaughtering experience.

If the rubbish cashgrab they released this year was half the game this is it would be 2012's Game of the Year.

Totally flexible base development. Really good isometric view (simulating 3d). Aliens which are always much stronger than you (unless you plan your research/engineering perfectly) these are things no longer met in modern implementations - XCOM: Enemy Unknown/Within or XCOM2. The new implementations are way easier than it was in original. In original aliens did not wait for you with their development. Have you every noticed that in new versions like XCOM: Enememy Unknown you encounter first Muton when you research laser weapons? - yes this is linear.. nothing like that in original. Although I love new version (XCOM and XCOM2) I really miss the pixels (meaning enemy ufo) from the original. Expand

Select members of your team, name and equip them, create a squad, shoot down a UFO and fly over to investigate in a turn-based tactical fashion. Research new technology, perform alien autopsy, expand your area of operation through influencing anti-alien factions in other countries, improve your base by building defenses, hangars, and towel racks! And that's just scratching the surface, sonny! :)) take a look at the size this game takes on your disk :D amazing how much depth it packs and how many hours of unbelievably joyous gameplay! They could make games back in da day! Expand

Of theOne of the best strategy games ever, with many sequels and successors and hardly any of them reaching the greatness of the original. Of the modern offerings, maybe X-Com Enemy Unknown and Xenonauts come somewhat close. Still, the complexity and "realism" of the original is amazing. Fire rockets which put grass and trees on fire, which then spreads, creates smoke and illuminates environment at night. And smoke blocks vision and can gradually make soldiers unconscious. Complex line of sight calculations in 3D when a soldier uses a flying suit in a partially destroyed multi-stock UFO. Fully destructible terrain and loot. Motion sensor grenades and guided rockets. Hardly any of these things where decently implemented anywhere else.

The combat may feel too random to some players, and the "reaction fire" mechanics too simple (especially to the fans of Jagged Alliance series like myself). That's why 9/10 and not 10/10.

If you are a strategy games fan but are too young to have seen this game, please get it and play it on DOS box (to make scrolling slower). Resist your urge to quit when you see the pixelated DOS graphics.
