It's a testament to the quality of XCOM 2 that despite performance hiccups on a mid-range PC I have been unable to put it down. It's at once radically different and reassuringly familiar, improving what needed to be improved and refining what needed to be refined without losing the core appeal of the series. XCOM has once again proven itself to be the strategy king.

An instant classic that refines, evolves, and redefines the ideas that came before. Strategy perfection. [March 2016, p.64]

XCOM 2 improves on its predecessor in almost every way, and proudly stands as one of the most deeply satisfying action-strategy games currently available.

With an unnerving sense of persistent tension and procedurally-generated maps that extend the value of every map, XCOM 2 survives the hype train with just a graze.

XCOM 2 is a worthy heir to the franchise with a few improvements to renew the gameplay, and a refreshing script which makes us join the resistance against alien invaders. A worthy investment indeed.

To be perfectly blunt, XCOM 2 is a pretty bad experience right now, and the best advice I can give is simple: wait for upcoming patches to fix things before buying. There's a much better game hidden somewhere beneath the performance issues and gameplay flaws, and it's a shame.

It looks gorgeous, it plays very well, and it is one hell of a challenge. If you liked X COM the original, then you simply have to buy this. They have improved practically everything about the original. This feels more much more dynamic. Gone are the days of satellite spamming your way to victory. This game provides meaningful choices throughout so that you really dont know which way you want to go. And i think that many different paths to victory will be possible. I think this is probably the best looking turn based game we have ever seen. Kudos to Firaxis on a job well done. A sure contender for game of the year. The only thing that slightly spoils it are a few buggy camera angles and some dodgy hang times, but you can forgive it that as they dont spoil the fun. And it is in infinitely better shape than most games when released. But the real gem of this is the mods. Oh my goodness what a year we have in store. Expand

Let me start out this review by saying, if you were a fan of the original XCOM games (1994+) and you were not a fan of the remake in 2012,Let me start out this review by saying, if you were a fan of the original XCOM games (1994+) and you were not a fan of the remake in 2012, then this game is probably not for you. It is a much tighter and more focused version of the 2012 release that is taking the gameplay in a new direction.

    • Positives:
    + Great graphics.
+ Gameplay is far more focused.
+ Lots of different voices and personality types for soldiers.
+ New classes are fantastic and well balanced.
+ New "loot table" system for crafting special weapons and armour.
+ Weapon upgrades attach to weapons and no longer take up utility slots.
+ Weapon and armour upgrade system completely overhauled and refined.
+ New world map really intricate and unique.
+ Many new aliens and creatures.
+ New incognito mode speeds up the start of missions significantly.
+ New Doomclock style gameplay really adds tension and weight to every decision.
+ Stupid aircraft mini game ripped out.
+ Mod support via the Steam workshop right out the box.
    + Still really challenging.

    • Meh
= Countries and language choices fairly limited.
= Base building somewhat dumbed down.
= Actions don't really seem to match up to the percentage chance. You will often see frequent misses in a row on 90%+ and then continuous hits on 60% and below.
= Fans of the original XCOM(1994) will find this is almost a new game entirely.

    • Negative
    - Painfully long loading times.
    - Horribly optimised performance considering it is the Unreal 3 engine.
    - Random map bonuses can lead to you either being horribly over powered or horribly outmatched.
    - A few gamebreaking bugs and mechanics(like civilians blocking paths) mean that ironman mode is extremely risky to try.

Conclusion: Other than the performance and a few bugs there is very little that the game does wrong. Most of the nit picks myself and other people have, are already being fixed through the modding. It is a truly fantastic experience and if you are a fan of the 2012 remake, or a fan or turnbased games in general, I cannot recommend this game highly enough.

Since it was my last move on the turn the faceless that spawned next to my guy (not the patrol, but at the same time as the patrol) pops up and smacks my guy and brings him to 1 health, the lancers from the patrol run across the entire map and hit two of my other guys for half their health.

Now I get to play my turn and I am guaranteed someone will die even if I take everyone out. This was a timed mission so you have to move forward to win but regardless, I was moving as tactfully as I could but it is ridiculous that you end your turn spawning a patrol who then gets a move for spawning (towards you) then gets a full turn to attack you. The game has a lot of great aspects but how is that fun. I save scummed and redid my move since I knew where the spawned from, kind of annoying it has to be like that. Should not be any spawns and if they are spawned they should not get a full move and a turn.

However, it feels like the game itself, for me, is far more frustrating than it is fun. I like the setting and the customization, but it feels like most of it doesn't work well together, in particular customization and the nature of the game. Do you like to spend 20-30 minutes customizing a character only to have them get lost due to some bogus rolls?

Theres also some other nasty things. One of the things that really bothered me was how the 'Concealed' mechanic is actually not really a stealth mechanic. After a certain amount of turns, the AI patrols will walk towards your stealthed characters, basically creating an artificial confrontation when in fact the game itself is programmed to do that.

I just don't really understand it. It's a neat game but at the same its just flawed. I would wait to buy it when its like, under $20. But other wise just avoid it.
