It's a testament to the quality of XCOM 2 that despite performance hiccups on a mid-range PC I have been unable to put it down. It's at once radically different and reassuringly familiar, improving what needed to be improved and refining what needed to be refined without losing the core appeal of the series. XCOM has once again proven itself to be the strategy king.

An instant classic that refines, evolves, and redefines the ideas that came before. Strategy perfection. [March 2016, p.64]

XCOM 2 improves on its predecessor in almost every way, and proudly stands as one of the most deeply satisfying action-strategy games currently available.

With an unnerving sense of persistent tension and procedurally-generated maps that extend the value of every map, XCOM 2 survives the hype train with just a graze.

XCOM 2 is a worthy heir to the franchise with a few improvements to renew the gameplay, and a refreshing script which makes us join the resistance against alien invaders. A worthy investment indeed.

To be perfectly blunt, XCOM 2 is a pretty bad experience right now, and the best advice I can give is simple: wait for upcoming patches to fix things before buying. There's a much better game hidden somewhere beneath the performance issues and gameplay flaws, and it's a shame.

It looks gorgeous, it plays very well, and it is one hell of a challenge. If you liked X COM the original, then you simply have to buy this. They have improved practically everything about the original. This feels more much more dynamic. Gone are the days of satellite spamming your way to victory. This game provides meaningful choices throughout so that you really dont know which way you want to go. And i think that many different paths to victory will be possible. I think this is probably the best looking turn based game we have ever seen. Kudos to Firaxis on a job well done. A sure contender for game of the year. The only thing that slightly spoils it are a few buggy camera angles and some dodgy hang times, but you can forgive it that as they dont spoil the fun. And it is in infinitely better shape than most games when released. But the real gem of this is the mods. Oh my goodness what a year we have in store. Expand

Reasons why you probably shouldn't play this game:
    1. You can't handle losing missions or worse, losing your soldiers AND the mission they died on.
    2. You're trapped in the past and insist on comparing this game to the original XCOM, circa last century.
    3. You're rig is older than 3 years old and you still insist on running this game on max. video settings.
    4. Timers on missions raise your blood pressure to unhealthy levels.
    5. You simply can't fathom that a 95 percent chance to hit strangely enough means a 1 in 20 chance that you will miss, and bad things may result.

Reasons why you SHOULD play this game:
    1. You thoroughly enjoyed playing XCOM: Enemy Unknown (EU) but want new enemies, new skills, new maps, more customization options, and a greater challenge.
    2. You like that, while in EU you could pretty much blow through the entire campaign with one squad, always using the same skills and gear, in this game you find that different squad composition and proper load-out decisions are essential to surviving various missions.
    3. You understand that some missions have timers, which changes the mission parameters, and you can accept that you might not always beat those timers, or you might have to leave a soldier behind in order to complete the mission (note: soldiers left behind get captured, and become the objective of a rescue mission at some point later in your campaign)

Hope that helps. I've just about completed one play-through with minimal lag or bugs. I can't wait to start a second campaign, knowing what I know now about proper builds and load-outs. And I can't wait to play in Iron Man mode and weep for my poor, fallen troops.

Frame rates dipped now and then but it did not draw my attention away from the fantastic gameplay and customization offered to your soldiers.

Liked the first game in 1994. Enjoyed the reboot in 2012. Loved the sequel in 2016.

Now with MOD support it will be even better. I have pt in 12 hours so far and found the campaign to be challenging. I typically have to reload most missions as my team gets mascaraed. The game looks great and runs smooth on my system, 980GTX. My only gripes are the timer in some missions. And the biggest is no Skirmish mode. I would love to be able to load a map with operatives and enemies and just play the tactical game only. Expand

It's terrible performance is very remarkable, but game doesn't look that extraordinary great to justify.

A lot of the tactical setup is ruined by unforgiving timers on everything.

Story exists, with some ok scenes, but it only prepares the stage for a cliffhanger ending.

Overall progress and research is boring. Yes, you want that new weapon or armor to get a upper hand, but each time the progress feels very underwhelming. Not that much game altering elements to research anyway.

    Repetitive missions and scenery.

I had some fun at start, but now I am glad it's over. Last missions were only an overlong rehash of already experienced enemies and gameplay. Felt like one of the cheap remakes, with even cheaper gameplay, but superior graphics.

Even in concealed mode the time keeps ticking. Are you planning to set up an ambush, time is ticking. You are in need for more supplies and need to go get them? forget it, time is ticking. Do you need to heal your squad after a tough mission? Recruit more because there is a "critical" mission (all the time somewhere) that If you skip, you'll lose more time and time is always running out. It's stressing and feels unfair being always, no matter what, at disadvantage. What I describe is manageable at the beginning of the game but after some hours the frustration starts to build up to the point where you are not enjoying the game anymore.

The AI is unfair too, they can see you all the time and hit you through walls. You find that perfect spot for your sniper over a roof and the AI just shoots you from a sidewalk trespassing all floors, that is stupid.

You'll find yourself more time loading saves than playing the game, that is bad design.

Timers in almost every mission. TBS with timers. Game is nearly unplayable because of this. No fun at all. Frustrating game ever.
