Xcom: Chimera Squad is proof positive that Firaxis are masters of the genre. The perfect starting point for newcomers, yet featuring enough depth for franchise vets, there is no reason to skip this title, especially at its bargain price.

XCOM: Chimera Squad brings together a huge list of fresh new ways to play. Each change introduces a new layer of strategy, and the new turn system completely upends what you know about XCOM. This is a daring new take on this venerable series, and having just completed it, I can’t wait to run it again.

XCOM: Chimera Squad is essentially the Agents of Shield to XCOM 2’s Avengers. It gently plays with the formula, and tells the peripheral stories of a much wider world on a much tighter budget and with much smaller stakes. In other words, it’s XCOM but chilled – and, in these desperate times, that’s just fine.

A small tactical game that plays well and looks good. If you like XCOM and you don´t have a problem with more stereotypical missions and sometimes a bigger role of RNG, you will probably like it. [Issue#304]

More than anything, Firaxis appear to be testing the waters with XCOM: Chimera Squad, and as a field test it's mostly successful. However, it ditches far too much of what makes XCOM so fantastic in the first place.

Regardless of the difficulty level, Chimera Squad doesn't let your soldiers die. Too bad, because the game could hugely benefit from this single change. Despite that, this new, mini-XCOM is worth the time. It won't be as thrilling as XCOM 2, but it's still a bargain.

To me this is an incongruent vision of the series where you have snake squadmates and meaningless banter instead of worldbuilding and replayability. It’s fine as a one-off, slightly fun but buggy (hopefully non-canon) entry, but if this signifies the future of the franchise, I am worried.

It's not supposed to be a sequel to War of the Chosen so they took the opportunity to explore different possibilities in gameplay and visuals. Quite frankly, I liked it. Of course it's not as exciting and challenging as the main game but I believe it was worth the effort and it turned out to be a fun and worthwhile game, especially considering the lower price. The people complaining about the story and "political propaganda" made me laugh. Are you really that bothered by a storyline in which humans, hybrids and aliens are trying to live together after the war while there are groups that oppose the integration and are trying to fight it? I consider it a very interesting plot to follow, it makes sense and has obvious parallels with the real world. Not only that, I loved being able to play with aliens and hybrids in the squad. The same people complaining about the "political" story are complaining about bad dialogue, as if either Enemy Unknown or War of the Chosen had brilliant Academy Award worthy dialogue. It's a game people, just relax.

    Pros:

    - New possibilities of gameplay within the XCOM world that are worth exploring further;
    - Good story with nice characters. Having aliens on your side too is very fun.
    - Simplified, so it might be a good entry point to people who have never played the series.
    - Excellent soundtrack and character voices.
    - I get that some people hate the comic book visuals but I like it and I think it makes sense considering this is supposed to be a spin off from the main game.

    Cons:

    - Same camera and graphic glitches we've had since Enemy Unknown.
    - The game is a bit short and does not allow you to have enough time to research everything and develop all abilities in every member of the squad. In the end it's not a big deal since some of the tech and researched itens are quite useless.
    - The game crashed without explanation like 3 times during my whole playthrough. Save all the time so you don't lose progress in a crucial mission.

Having said that, I can't help but notice that you only have 2 women on the starting team. The mayor is a woman. Your BOSS is a woman. I can forgive the diversity in this context since it is integral to the story. The overwhelming majority of women in prominent roles surrounded by weak men is what bothers me. It's incredibly woke, but fortunately it's not complete trash.

It's kinda like Mario games, you don't play them for the story, though I was expecting a dark and foreboding sequel in XCOM 3 TERROR FROM THE DEEP after the ending in 2.

This is a decline in terms of gameplay though it does run quite smoothly compared to previous entries in the series. Expand

incomplete buggy game with short game play :( sadly.
Would have been nice if they could have more in depth strategy and base building and story and not have such a short half-assed game with truncated short missions .. not to mention taking control away from the players on multiple aspect of the game.

Like another guy said .. it is like a dumb-down, scaled down, simplistic, mobile game version.

It seems like Firaxis/2K is in desperate need of cash, the game collects and sells an extraordinary amount of telemetry data from players/customers. It seems to be unfinished, because all the time the game gets stuck, stutters or even crashes. The design and style are very youth-oriented, artificial and forcedly progressive. The innovations can't inspire for very long and somehow I miss the real Xcom feeling very quickly. It seems like a project of an ambitious modder. Refund. I would have never thought it, but it just doesn't grab me. A great pity. I hope the (real) third one continues the quality of the predecessors. Expand
