It´s an improvement on the last game, but not that much. The story isn´t great, but 3 makes it worth it, kinda.

It's ok. The fighting is good but gets boring pretty quickly especially if you played other games in this franchise

Take this review with a grain of salt, as I have never been a fan of the original God of War games. It combined two game mechanics that I despise the most: Button mashing and quick time events. Graphics, sound, cutscenes all push the PS2 to its limits so if I were a game critic, maybe I would have rated this higher.

Core game is still the same and I do not like it. I still hate button mashing; I still hate quick time events and God of War II has a lot of those. It is also as much a puzzle and platforming game as it is an action, so expect plenty of puzzle solving and precise platforming. So yes, it is an epic journey with some good boss fights and a great story, but it’s just not for me.

Almost straight sequence in the first game, at least in my view. I was at the beginning of this one, I stopped and went to play Ghost of Sparta. In some ways I prefer the first game and in some this one.

The story of God of War 2 is much more complex in narrative aspects than the first, but I liked it a little more, Kratos' story captivated me. The 'prologue' is quite frantic and cool to play. But the beginning of the game is really strange, Kratos is very pissed. I did some research and saw that Ghost of Sparta was made between the first and the second game 'fixing' this hole. Zerei Ghost of Sparta and I recommend playing before that. Anyway, my main criticism of the story was the presentation, I found the rhythm of the story very bad, at first it was reasonable but here the distance of each cutscene worsened a lot. Only the beginning and end of the game are full of them. Apart from that the game ends in the 'climax' of Kratos' story, which at first is badass, but the truth is that it is kind of a joke.

The gameplay is better in general, but without major changes. The parry system is much more useful and is much more 'complex' than in the first game. The number of boss fights increased a lot compared to the first game, but that left most of them in that little striking. Some pretty bad sequences, like the one with the falling pillars and the one with the skeleton elevator. In the first game, this was practically non-existent. You can use 2 weapons 'at the same time' and the way of combining the two is reasonable, personally I didn't do much combining despite switching between 2 constantly. The puzzles remained good but I found them a little inferior in general.

Some checkpoints are 'bad', something I had no problem with at first. Many things were reused in the first game, with slight changes, from textures to enemies, combos, and a specific skill.

The graphics are very similar in general. The cinematics are fantastic, they were good in the first one, but here they are absurd.

The soundtrack remains very unique and characteristic of the saga. I found it decent but very little varied.

Action gameplay feels like it is holding something back because of its release on the PS2. It feels like it's sacrificed itself to make God of War 3 good as it was

Exelect music and at technical levels it is better.

Kratos is a lot angrier, and a lot less sympathetic (though I'm told the events of Ghost of Sparta explain this), and while it retains a little bit of the Harryhausen movie feel, especially with the inclusion of other characters from Greek myth and skeletons (spooky!), it just doesn't feel as charming. It's a little easy in places, and I can't remember any boss fights giving me that sense of awe that the first and third games did. It's a good game, certainly, and you can tell that the developers knew what they were doing, but I just didn't care for it that much. Expand

I played it once and I played it again untill the end... But God of War 2 in my honest opinion, despite having a great art design and sound track, it's a game that cleary relies more in flashy moves, blood and gore resulting in a game full of show but lacking of substance.

Let me start by saying that I LOVED the original. Every bit, and I didnt even have to check the internet once to get a clue. I found that God of War 2 had far too many obscure puzzles, and at some points even on normal difficulty was frustrating enough to throw your controller across the room. I got almost to the end, where you climb a rope across lava and the bad guys shoot it down. then Let me start by saying that I LOVED the original. I got almost to the end, where you climb a rope across lava and the bad guys shoot it down. then you climb up and have to fight about 10 medusas in a row( I should mention you have already used all of your magic in the previous endeavor, the rotating spike wheel while guys are trying to kill you.) All in all, the god of war series is awesome but I felt that the last half of this one was just too hard for people who arent necessarily video game freaks. Expand

This is a good game. I dont think it is a "94!" style game even if its on a old playstation. The combat is really fun but not really that deep...I dont know why poeple think its so deep and are amazed by it...Kotos can bust some sweet combos and is as smooth as anytrhing, but in the middle of some of the more pwerful combos you can't even stop to block. Its fun and very good pacing, but only till you beat it, then you just want to see the next game and get some unlocklble content....which brings me to my most pi$$ed off complaint......To unlock the really good stuff you have to play through Titan mode and/or get Titan mode on all the callaenges. This is good to finally see a game with extra fun things in it, but the diffuctly in Titan mode is ridculas!!!! its not fun! its like hard, hard work. I beat it in Titan mode and only had i a couple of times not slamed down my controller and curse the develpors before shuting off my playstation in rage. A normal gamer would never go through that and even when you do, the unlockables are NOT that great. some arena style foolishness and costumes that should have been unlocked during the first run through......If it wasnt for having the normal mode i would give them game a flat 0 becasue NO game (No matter how great of story---which isnt all that great in this) should force you to go through outragous differcullies. I found myself dieing atleast 10 times by 3 bats at first! thats just stuipid. just casue you can make it that hard does not make a good fu$kin idea. The develpors really just prarade off the myths when ever they like. The story does suck. I'm sorry. It just places a bunch of myth creatures around and makes up whatever damn story they wish with just alittle sparkle of true folk lure...I'm not saying poeple wont love this game, but i think this is way too overated and i dont think i ever said that about any game other than that new Final Fantsay...............How about Krotos? yeah hes cool "I am the God of war" Over and over again. I do dig him on being a cool badass, but thats all....I dont care about him and its hard to..he's an a$$hole! A complete Di(k head. Not that he needs to be loving, but he waaaaaaaayyyyy over board. The actor just plays his same notes over and over again being 'mean' and 'tough' But at the end of the day you can only take so much of that foolishness. The female narrator was brillant. In both games she has kept the soul in the story. Without her it would turly fall into way too melodramaic nonsense. Like i said before, I dont know what poeple are thinking, maybe they just feel they need to becasue of the critics. Yet on the other hand, its the most brutal and insane killing game i ever seen...kudos for that becasue everything else is a mess (not technacally mind you, but story wise and the so called best combat.) P.S any one that thinks this is the best adventure game ever is a true jack-a$$ like ING. Zelda for the Wii is 20 times better and it isnt even the best adventure game.... (How can this game even compete with Oblivion? altought its on a very old console it doesnt mean it desreves to be a BEST adventrue ever ranking) I would have payed 20$ for this, but not $67! Expand

SCEA missed the boat on this one. First of all, a lot of Greek mythology is about seafaring. The GOW1 started off on creaky ships with hydras out at sea, which set the ambiance. GOW2, not so much except for one token sea creature (you fight on land)! Also, the music was too generically epic. I missed the simple lyre tunes from GOW1 that seem much more appropriate to 1000BC. God of War II may in fact be the best action game ever made. It outdoes the original God of War in every way.

There are a few brilliant core improvements, such as the beautifully implemented grappling system that lets you swing around with your blades. But for the most part, the game's best features are context-specific things rather than features that change or improve the title as a whole...A stellar example of what can be done when a developer focuses on telling a story and lets that drive the game.
  3. It's not just one element that turned the game into a masterpiece, it's every element – the controls (perfection), world design (unbelievably creative), combat (exciting and challenging), and enemy selection (unreal) are just a few of the reasons why this is PS2’s best first-party release.
